WARS The Reconstruction Period was a trying time for southern states. Deprived of their statehood, mail service, etc. survival was difficult. The links below, explain some of the events which took place in Texas following the Civil War.
RECONSTRUCTION ACT--March, 1867, The Reconstruction Act was passed by the US Legislature over President Andrew Johnson’s veto. It was during this time when Texas lost the statehood status--therefore, the US mail services were suspended. The Civil War and Reconstruction brought a halt to the education process--schools.- Presidential Proclamation Declaring a State of Peace between Texas and the United States-- 20 August, 1866
