Loper, son of Edward S. Loper, is thought to be a 1st cousin to Littleberry, son of Absolom Loper. This would make Edward and Absolon brothers.

Littleberry, his wife, and the first four children left Mississippi and went to TX. The children grew up in the communities of Colfax and Oakland in Van Zant Co., TX.

Granddaughter, Lillian Loper Foster, said she remembered talk as a child that some of their relatives came from Mississippi. She rememberd that three brothers and a sister left Mississippi. Two went north and two went south. That is all she knew.

Littlebery was born on the banks of the Tallahama River in Jones Co., MS.He enlisted in the Confederate Army as a private at the age of 26 in Decatur, MS. He was a member of Co. D, 39th Mississippi Infantry Regiment. Company D members were all form Newton Co., MS and were called the Newton Hornets.

He was captured at Port Hudson, LA (on the MS River just north of Baton Rouge) on July 9, 1863 when the regiment was surrendered unconditionally. General Banks carried out an informal agreement and paroled the enlisted men, and sent the commissioned officers to Johnson's Island. Littleberry was paroled July 12-13, 1863. He deserted Feb 1-8, 1864, but rejoined his unit on May 20th, 1864. After several hand-to-hand battles with massive loses, he was captured again near Lake Alatoona, GA(a few miles NW of Atlanta-near what is now a National Monument called "Kennesaw Mtn. National Battlefield Park.") on Oct. 5, 1864 and imprisoned Oct. 21-22, 1864 in Louisville, KT. From there he was sent to Camp Chase, Ohio, arriving on Oct. 24, 1864.

In early May 1864, General Sherman invaded Georgia with three armies totaling 100,000 men. With an army of only 60,000 men (including Littleberry's unit) General Johnson fell back mile by mile, stalling Sherman repeatedly. Then at Kenesaw Mountain on Jun 27, he fought a pitched battle with Sherman that cost him dearly. Sherman burned and destroyed all that he could in his march to the sea.

The above three paragraphs came from Clifford Loper, 2846 Longleaf Rd., Panama City, FL.
