I am going to attempt something new here. We all know that there will be times when a song's lyrics will bring to mind the sweet agony that is Mulder and Scully's relationship. In this section, I will attempt to suggest an appropriate "theme" song for every one of the X-Files episodes. This is a daunting task, to say the least. I will need as much assistance as you are willing to provide! Needless to say, I'm not aware of every song that exists out there, and I can't make all the possible connections, either. So if you see a suggested theme song for an episode and you have a better song in mind, more appropriate for that particular episode, by all means, tell me!

A theme song should try and echo the major themes of the episode. I certainly haven't found a theme song for all the episodes yet, so there is plenty of room for suggestion. Also, I'm sure there are more "fitting" theme songs for some of the episodes that have suggestions already. I have provided lyrics when I could.

I want to stress the importance of lyrics relevant to Mulder and Scully's relationship. It's true that almost any love song can be interpreted as shippy, but the point of this exercise is to showcase Mulder and Scully's relationship as portrayed in the actual episodes. There is, of course, a necessary escape from the literal at times in order to fully appreciate the metaphorical values of the songs. The theme songs I have chosen I believe represent the true spirit of Mulder and Scully's relationship.

Visit The M & S Soundtrack Project for the mother of all sites dedicated to the purpose of sharing song lyrics in respect to the Mulder/Scully relationship.

None of these songs are mine and are the property of the respective artists and their record labels.

Oh--what if here's another one

Maybe he's in love
I'd feel like a fool
Life can be so cruel
I don't know what to do...

Should I tell him
Tell him that the sun and moon rise in his eyes
Reach out to him
And whisper tender words so soft and sweet
Hold him close to feel his heart beat...

Inside my heart
There's an empty room...
It's waiting for you.
And I am wanting
And I am needing you here
Inside the absence of fear...

There is this hunger
This restlessness inside of me
And it knows that you're no stranger
You're my gravity
My hands will adore you
Through all darkness aim.

PUSHER--I Don't Know by Celine Dion
Suggested by Sheree Blizzard

A mountain of stone, a door of steel
Can't stand in my way, I'd go on
Brutal machines, unbending laws
Can't slow me down, I'd go on
I've learned how to deal and when to fight
I know what's real, I know what's right
I'm not afraid, a wounded dove
I can be tender in a world so tough

I'm sure I could face the bitter cold
But life without you, I don't know

The winds of the heart can blow me down
But I get right up and I stand my ground
I've tasted fear, my share of pain
The wasted tears of love in vain
I've held you tight, pushed you away
Now with all my might I beg you to stay

I'm sure I could face the bitter cold
But life without you, I don't know

I know what I want, I know what I need
But there's just one thing I must believe
Deep in the night by a dying flame
You will be there when I call your name

I'm sure I could face the bitter cold
But life without you, I don't know

I don't know

PAPER HEARTS--Power Of Two by The Indigo Girls

You know the things that I am afraid of
I'm not afraid to tell
And if we'd ever leave a legacy
It's that we loved each other
Well I've seen the shadows of so many people
Trying on the treasures of youth...

So we're okay
We're fine
Baby I'm here to stop your crying
Chase all the ghosts from your head
I'm stronger than the monster beneath your bed
Smarter than the tricks played on your heart
We'll look at them together
Then we'll take them apart
Adding up the total of a love that's true
Multiply life by the power of two.

All the shiny little trinkets of temptation
Something new instead of something old (but keep the old)
All you gotta do is scratch beneath the surface
And it's fools gold, fools gold, fools gold
And now we're talking about a difficult thing
And your eyes are getting wet
But I took us for better
And I took us for worse
And don't you ever forget it.

So we're okay
We're fine
Baby I'm here to stop your crying
Chase all the ghosts from your head
I'm stronger than the monster beneath your bed
Smarter than the tricks played on your heart
We'll look at them together
Then we'll take them apart
Adding up the total of a love that's true
Multiply life by the power of two.

NEVER AGAIN--Hard To Say I'm Sorry by Chicago

"Everybody needs a little time away..."
I heard her say
"...from each other.
Even lovers need a holiday
Far away
From each other."

Hold me now
It's hard for me to say I'm sorry
I just want you to stay

After all that we've been through
I will make it up to you
I promise to

And after all that's been said and done
You're just a part of me I can't let go

Couldn't stand to be kept away
Just for the day
From your body
Wouldn't want to be swept away
Far away
From the one that I love

Hold me now
It's hard for me to say I'm sorry
I just want you to know

Hold me now
I really want to tell you I'm sorry
I could never let you go

After all that we've been through
I will make it up to you
I promise to

And after all that's been said and done
You're just a part of me I can't let go

After all that we've been through
I will make it up to you
I promise to

You're going to be the lucky one

SMALL POTATOES--Don't You Think? by Natalie Imbruglia

Some people don't worry 'bout nothing,
Don't know whats going on
I'm not one who can't say they're sorry
I just care what's going on
There's more important things
Than making sure your watch looks just right
And second hand opinions don't make you look any smarter

Don't you think, don't you think
Don't you think that maybe it's time,
Yes, its time, time you started thinking, time you started thinking,
And don't just sweeten up the taste

Brother shoots brother,
But meanwhile you're fixing up your face
You're not affected by the truth,
Unless it's on your own doorstep,
Deoderise your paradise, no point in getting crazy

Don't you think, don't you think
Don't you think that maybe it's time
Yes, it's time, time you started thinking 'bout things in the back of your head

Someone said before you turn a blind eye,
Hear a bell ring
Sex sells everything, but I don't buy it so don't try
Sleeping in the small world, head in the sand
Better wash your hands, make a new plan
There's more important things than making sure your shoes walk just right
Ignore reality; there's nothing you can do about it,
The clothes you wear don't make the man
It's just another party

ZERO SUM

ELEGY

DEMONS--If That's What It Takes by Celine Dion

You're the bravest of hearts, you're the strongest of souls
You're my light in the dark, you're the place I call home
You can say it's all right, but I know that you're breaking up inside
I see it in your eyes
Even you face the night afraid and alone
That's why I'll be there

When the storm rises up, when the shadows descend
Every beat of my heart, every day without end
Every second I live, that's the promise I make
Baby, that's what I'll give, if that's what it takes
If that's what it takes

You can sleep in my arms, you don't have to explain
When your heart's crying out, baby, whisper my name
'Cause I've reached out for you when the thunder is crashing up above
You've given me your love
When you smile like the sun that shines through the pain
That's why I'll be there

When the storm rises up, when the shadows descend
Every beat of my heart, every day without end
I will stand like a rock, I will bend till I break
Till there's no more to give, if that's what it takes
I will risk everything, I will fight,
I will bleed
I will lay down my life, if that's what you need

Every second I live, that's the promise I make
Baby, that's what I'll give, if that's what it takes

Through the wind and the rain, through the smoke and the fire
When the fear rises up, when the wave's ever higher
I will lay down my heart, my body, my soul
I will hold on all night and never let go
Every second I live, that's the promise I make
Baby, that's what I'll give, if that's what it takes

If that's what it takes
Every day
If that's what it takes
Every day

REDUX--For You by Tara McLean

You are all I see
Sweet obsession in my soul
Fill each moment with your voice
Breathe your beauty into me
Would I die for you?
No, I live for you
You know I do, you know I do.
You are all I know
Your mouth is all I taste
My breast between your lips
My tongue upon your waist
Would I die for you?
I live for you
You know I do, you know I do.

And though you never will be mine
I will live to know that you have touched me
Once upon a time...
You are all I am.
And everything I feel
Your words are all I understand
But you’re not real
Would I die for you?
I live for you
You know I do, you know I do.
I do...

Tonight I'm tangled in my blanket of clouds
Dreaming aloud
Things just won't do without you, matter of fact
Oh oh whoa oh
I'm on your back
I'm on your back
Oh oh whoa oh
I'm on your back
If you'd accept surrender, I'll give up some more
Weren't you adored
I cannot be without you, matter of fact
Oh oh whoa oh
I'm on your back

If you walk out on me
I'm walking after you
If you walk out on me
I'm walking after you

Another heart is cracked in two
I'm on your back
I cannot be without you, matter of fact
Oh oh whoa oh
I'm on your back
I'm on your back
Oh oh whoa oh
I'm on your back

If you walk out on me
I'm walking after you
If you walk out on me

Against All Odds by Phil Collins

How could I just let you walk away
Just let you leave without a trace?
When I stand here taking every breath with you,
You're the only one who really knew me at all

How can you just walk away from me
When all I can do is watch you leave?
'Cause we shared the laughter and the pain
And even shared the tears
You're the only one who really knew me at all

So take a look at me now
There's just an empty space
And there's nothing left here to remind me
Just the memory of your face
Well, take a look at me now
There's just an empty space
And you coming back to me is against all odds
And that's what I got to face

I wish I could just make you turn around
Turn around and see me cry
There's so much I need to say to you
So many reasons why
You're the only one who really knew me at all

So take a look at me now
There's just an empty space
And there's nothing left here to remind me
Just the memory of your face
Well, take a look at me now
There's just an empty space
But to wait for you is all I can do
And that's what I've got to face
Take a good look at me now
'Cause I'll still be standing here
And you coming back to me is against all odds
It's the chance I've got to take

TERMS OF ENDEARMENT--The Path Of Thorns by Sarah McLachlan

I knew you wanted to tell me
In your voice there was something wrong
But if you would turn your face away from me
You cannot tell me you're so strong...
Just let me ask of you one small thing
As we have shared so many tears...

In the terms of endearment
In the terms of the life that you love
In the terms of the years that pass you by
In the terms of the reason why.

Through the years I've grown to love you
Though your commitment to most would offend
But I stuck by you holding on with my foolish pride
Waiting for you to give in...

MILAGRO--From This Moment by Shania Twain

From this moment
Life has begun
From this moment
You are the one
Right beside you
Is where I belong
From this moment on

From this moment
I have been blessed
I live only for your happiness
And for your love
I'd give my last breath
From this moment on

I give my hand to you with all my heart
Can't wait to live my life with you
Can't wait to start
You and I will never be apart
My dreams came true because of you

From this moment
As long as I live
I will love you
I promise you this
There is nothing
I wouldn't give
From this moment on

You're the reason I believe in love
And you're the answer to my prayers from up above
All we need is just the two of us
My dreams came true because of you

From this moment
as long as I live
I will love you
I promise you this
There is nothing
I wouldn't give
From this moment
I will love you
As long as I live
From this moment on...

THE UNNATURAL--You're Still the One

When I first saw you,
I saw love.
And the first time you touched me,
I felt love.
And after all this time,
You're still the one I love.

Looks like we made it
Look how far we've come my baby
We might have took the long way
We knew we'd yet there someday
They said, "I bet they'll never make it,"
But just look at us holding on
We're still together, still going strong

You're still the one I run to
The one that I belong to
You're still the one I want for life
You're still the one I love
The only one I dream of...

Ain't nothing better
We beat the odds together
I'm glad we didn't listen
Look at what we would be missing...

THREE OF A KIND

FIELD TRIP--Don't Know Much by Linda Ronstadt and Aaron Neville

Look at this face
I know the years are showing
Look at this life
I still don't know where it's going
I don't know much,
But I know I love you
And that may be all I need to know

Look at these eyes
They've never seen what matters
Look at these dreams,
So beaten and so battered
I don't know much,
But I know I love you
And that may be all I need to know

So many questions still left unanswered
So much I've never broken through
And when I feel you near me
Sometimes I see so clearly
The only truth I've ever known
Is me and you

Look at this man
So blessed with inspiration
Look at this soul,
Still searching for salvation
I don't know much,
But I know I love you
And that may be
All I need to know

I don't know much,
But I know I love you
And that may be
All I need to know

I don't know much,
But I know I love you And that may be...
...all there is to know.
