From the beginning, Mulder and Scully have had a special relationship. But Shippers were made to feel like we were crazy or giving more meaning to gestures and looks than was really there, especially with Chris Carter being so adamant about how Mulder and Scully will NEVER explore any romantic possibilites. Well, we aren't crazy, and here is the proof. Hopefully, with the help of all you Shippers out there, I can compile a list of "witnesses" to Mulder and Scully's theorized more-than-platonic bond. The more characters that notice it, the more we can rest assured that we are all in our right minds and the non-Shippers out there are the ones wearing blinders. So if you're watching an episode, and another character does or says something that indicates his/her perception of something more between our two favorite federal agents who have perfected the art of denial on this issue, check this list! If you don't see them listed, please contact me and I'll be sure to include the character you found, along with how you would like me to credit you. With this combined effort, we will soon have "proof undeniable." Keep on the lookout, Shippers--THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE!!
Wetwired: Very obscure moment, but when Scully is lying in the hospital bed, Mrs. Scully is there to fluff her pillows and what-not, but then Mulder shows up, and she automatically leaves. We don't even see her do it, but we see that she is no longer there. It was as if she didn't want to be intrusive.
Redux II: When Mulder has been visiting Scully in the hospital, Mrs. Scully arrives and asks softly, "I hope I'm not interrupting...?" That a mother whose daughter is on the point of dying would ask such a question when she visits her speaks very much to the deep bond between Scully and Mulder, as intimate as a husband and a wife. Of course, Mrs. Scully could just have impeccable manners.
Please feel free to me at jenu1bruin@centropolis.org
Excelsius Dei: Hal asks Scully, "If I told you you were a very pretty woman and I would like
to show you some affection, would you be offended?" Scully and Mulder exchange looks, and this prompts Hal to apologize to Mulder, "Oh, I didn’t mean to step on your toes there." What acute perception this senior citizen has! And the best thing is, Mulder doesn't deny that Hal has stepped on any toes. Instead, he says hurriedly, "It's all right."
Emily: When Mulder and Scully take Emily in to the hospital, this doctor (sorry, there's no more specific way to identify him) asks, "Are you two the parents?" Mulder looks at Scully for a moment, then does not answer and simply turns away to look into the room where Emily is, while Scully answers, "I'm her mother."
Quagmire: When the good doctor chances upon Mulder and Scully stranded upon a rock, he asks a bit snidely, "Hope I'm not interrupting anything." Yes, you did--who knows where the conversation would have gone?
Redux: He says to CSM about Mulder, "Without his partner, you may have underestimated his fragility."
Small Potatoes: When Mulder and Scully show up at a fertility clinic to investigate an outbreak of babies born with tails, Fred looks at Mulder and Scully with sympathy and tries to commiserate: "You too, huh?" Along this same vein, but I'm not going to make him a separate incident since he has no identity other than "Man #2," this man exclaims in outrage to the fertility specialist when he sees Mulder and Scully, "For God's sake Alton, how many of us are there?"
Rain King: When the good mayor first meets Mulder and Scully, he says jovially to Mulder, "If I'd have known you was bringing the missus, I would've arranged for fancier accommodations." Mulder leaves it up to Scully to clear up the misunderstanding.
Rain King: One of the more blatant examples! He tells Mulder that he finds it surprising that Mulder and Scully have never attempted anything beyond their professional relationship. He goes on to say, "I've seen how you two gaze at one another." Mulder replies, "This is about you, Holman," not denying until much later that he gazes at Scully, but it is unconvincing at best, and the fact that he went back to it after an entire discussion with Holman shows that he'd probably been thinking about Holman's comment the entire time.
Redux: When he tells Mulder that he has what Mulder wants "most desperately of all" and Mulder replies, "The cure for Scully's cancer?" Kritschgau only nods--it is the answer he was expecting. Many X-Philes all over the world was expecting Mulder to say something about Samantha, but Kritschgau knew what Mulder wanted more than even that. With as much information as he had, I don't doubt that he was aware of Samantha's existence and Mulder's history, and still he knew that Scully was most important to Mulder.
Pusher: Pusher notes, "You and your pretty partner seem awfully close." Nothing like an absolute stranger who's really good at mind games to read them like a book...
Rain King: After Mulder's room is destroyed by a hurtling cow, the Motel Manager tells Scully, "Oh, miss, we moved your boyfriend's things into your room." Again Scully denies that Mulder is anything more intimate to her than her partner, and says that she prefers separate rooms, but the motel is booked, so she and Mulder DO end up sharing a room (though we never get to see it)!
Milagro: Padgett, in love with Scully himself, watches her with Mulder and realizes his mistake. He tells the two partners, "In my book I'd written that Agent Scully falls in love, but that's obviously impossible. Agent Scully is already in love." How much more explicit can it get?
The Amazing Maleeni: Mulder and Scully show up at the bank where Pinchbeck works. He greets, "Good morning, Mr. and Mrs...?"
Ascension: Mrs. Scully entrusts Mulder with Scully's necklace, when it may possibly be the last link to Scully that we'll ever see. Mrs. Scully would not give it up to just anyone--she knows that Mulder needs it more than she. Also, there is the fact that if Scully is ever found, Mrs. Scully could just as easily give it back to her daughter, but she gives Mulder that intimacy--she is certain that both he and her daughter would want it that way.
One Breath: When Mulder confronts CSM (he will always be CSM to me) in CSM's apartment about what they did to Scully, and why they took her instead of Mulder, CSM replies, "I like you. I like her too. That’s why she was returned to you." How much more obvious does it have to get? Returned to you? Does Scully belong to Mulder? The only way such intimacies work is if Scully and Mulder have the type of intimate relationship (like a husband belongs to a wife and a wife to a husband) that can hold it--and they do. Would CSM have said that if Scully had been a male partner? Unless both Mulder and his partner were gay, I wouldn't think so!
Fight the Future: When Well-Manicured Man says to the other members of the Syndicate, "Kill Mulder, we take the risk of turning one man's quest into a crusade," Strughold replies, "Then you must take away what he holds most valuable.
That with which he can't live without." Then they cut to Scully!! That is not a coincidence. These writers and directors known for their detail and subtlety wouldn't have missed such an obvious connection--they also knew exactly what the audience would think (especially Shipper minds!). Plus, there was nothing and no one else he could have meant. Although, it wasn't even they that almost took Scully away from Mulder; it was the agents' own curiosity that led them to the "Jiffy Pop Poppers" and found themselves surrounded by the bees.
Fight the Future: WMM knew that by giving Mulder the vaccine and telling him so many answers that they would kill him. The reason he does it, he explains, is "for the sake of my own children." So he gives his life, and risks the lives of his family, on the strength of Mulder's love and loyalty for Scully. If you really think about this, think about how much WMM depended on the fact that not only would Mulder be willing to do everything he could to save Scully, but actually succeed. It not only says a lot about how much he believes in Mulder's capabilities, but how he knows that for Scully, Mulder will do anything and everything.
