ALL THE RUMORS: Title Information: Rumors had the title pinned as The X-Files 2: Invasion (which has since been confirmed as false), as it would supposedly centre around the alien colonisation of Earth. However, Chris Carter has said that a more likely scenario is a non-mytharc movie, possibly a ghost story. So it stands as simply The X-Files 2.
Couple of things about this: the monster-of-the-week type movie is a possibility because supposedly the Fox execs expected Fight the Future to do better at the box office and blamed the dense mytharc on why it didn't. The monster-of-the-week type movie would be geared to attract a larger audience. HOWEVER, this may all be a rumor as Chris Carter is known for spreading things to throw people off the scent. If you ask me, it has to be about colonization.
One thing for sure - due to criticism from quite a few people, Rob Bowman will not direct the next movie. Instead, it will be directed by a professional movie director. I really liked "Fight the Future," including the direction, personally.
Chris Carter has been quoted as saying: "The word sequel scares me, but the word PREQUEL doesn't." Not that any of the movie rumors seem to have anything to do with a prequel, so this may just be academic.
No script exists for the movie yet.
Chris Carter recently spoke out about the sequel. Here's what he said:
"There will be a second X-Files movie as far as I am concerned. But it won't be on this summer's hiatus. It seems like the actors are very excited to do it. It's just a matter of finding the time, and I think it would either come out in the summer of 2001 or possibly 2002. It would have been great to culminate the series and go right into the next big movie. I think there will be a year, or possibly two years in between."
"Most likely we will wind it down at the end of year seven. You are going to see the TV series become the movie series." I'll say it's "most likely"!! What with its two stars itching to do something else. Unfortunately for us.
Several rumors have this movie a ghost story, although it may also be a colonisation story as well ... Dark Horizons said this: "With the X-Files permanently closed, Agents Mulder and Scully must prove once and for all the conspiracy of extraterrestrial life."
Added 6-16-99:
According to Mitch Pileggi, "There is a plan to make another 'The X-Files' movie, the summer
following the last season of the show [which will be next year]." So using our math skills and some educated guessing, if they're making the movie next season, the movie will be out probably the year after that. So, Summer 2001 seems like a good guess.

from a radio interview with CC on KROQ:
"We have an idea. We want to do a stand alone, just a really good scary movie, not something that's tied into the mythology of the show."
