My Sewing

An important part of my life is my sewing and needlework. I do counted cross-stitch, crewel, crochet, quilting, and smocking as well as making clothes, costumes, etc. I've made Halloween costumes for my children and others for years. My "kiddos" have turned into "costume snobs" -- they don't want what can be bought because MOM can make it! I've made costumes for a witch, Snow White, a clown, m&ms, an m&m package, a fairy princess or so, football players, a puppy dog, a cat, a tree (yes I said a tree), a duck, a cheerleader, 50's girls (that poodle skirt thing), a pumpkin, and so on and so on.

My family also participates in the annual Confederate Pageant here -- which means antebellum costumes for everyone! For weeks beforehand, I (and all the others in my town who sew) work diligently with batistes, organdies, satins, velvets, laces, and ribbons to create these costumes. There are hundreds of participants every year. An antebellum costume for a female consists of pantalettes of white cottom trimmed with tucks, lace, and ribbons; a hoopskirtof white cotton trimmed with tucks and lace into which steel hoops are threaded through fabric casings; a taffeta or cotton underskirt (not always required, but usually), and the outer dress, which can be of any period fabric depending on the scene the person is in). these costumes are very detailed and beautiful. They have to pass inspection by a committee for construction and authenticity. Do I love it? You betcha!
