| I began
to fall in love with music at the age of 6 when I started to learn
classical piano. I will always remember my first piano teacher who is a
shanghainese. She was very kind but unfortunely, she was suffered from
diabetes. She was very strict on techniques and right positions. That's
a good foundation for me. However, she could hardly see score until I
was in grade 3. I don't know whether she is still alive or not as I
didn't see her for more than 10 years.
After I attained grade 8, a piano teacher inspired me on how to appreciate music. That's F.2-3 and I started to buy CD. Beethoven Symphony No.5 and Sample 2 by Naxons were the first 2 CDs I bought. I scarified my money for lunch and clothing and spent all the money earned from teaching piano on classical CDs. Mostly I got were Naxons or compliants on reasonable prices. I didn't notice the importance of choosing the "Right" Musicians. After some time, I didn't know why I felt boring when listening to music and playing piano. So, I started to learn guitar in F.6. The guitar teacher showed me the way in indie music. I learnt songs from Beyond, Nirvana, Chui Jin, Smashing Punkins, Led Zepplin, etc. At that time, I didn't enjoy indie music because I thought it's too loud. Even Suede's Dog Man Star, I could not bear. However, I found it interesting to play guitar and try some music besides classical. I was lazy to practise and my hand is too small for that acoustic guitar. It's painful to play. So, I stopped after learning for half a year but I searched for music from my friend and Chi Chong's choice. I only got one friend who listened to Nirvana, Suede, Radiohead, etc. at that time. My pulse on playing instrument was very weak. So, I decided to learn drum. When I went into university, there was a chance. Luckily, I learnt from a teacher who played matching band when he was small. His grap and position were not bad. They are important on playing drums. As he graduated, he could not teach me. So, I found another drum teacher who influenced me in the world of jazz and the attitude towards music. I began to learn some jazz patterns and listening more jazz but I was not so fancy about jazz until Jazzing Room Course in 2000. At that course, I didn't learn much but I met some friends who love jazz and some good players. I learnt much from them, from playing to listening. It's great. I was happy to organise indie band shows when I was in university. I won't regard that I spent too much time on music and band shows and my academic result was poor. Because what I found out is precious. Something cannot be learnt from books or bought. Anyway, when I played in indie bands, just thought it's fun to play in shows, didn't think too much about music. But now, I will think more on music-the feel, the arrangement, the skills, etc. Well, it's a question if you ask me what music genre I listen to now? Though I love jazz, I like listening to any kinds with good melodies and feel. If you have some good music and bands, please introduce to me! : ) ¡@ |
