"As Long As They're Together" 5/8b

May 7, 1998
Quantico

8:30 A.M.

Agent Sean Taylor was preparing some slides when he noticed his
newest coworker leaning against the counter, with her eyes closed.
"Hey, Agent Scully, er..Mulder, are you feeling okay?" When she
looked up, he nodded at her. "Cause you don't look too great..."
Dana was trying to decide if she should admit to feeling sick, or
just say she was fine. When another wave of nausea hit her, she shook
her head. "Uh, actually I'm not feeling very well..I think I may have
caught a touch of the flu, or something." She stood up and took a
deep breath.
Agent Taylor walked over. "Why don't you go home. There's not
much to do here, so it's no problem." he paused, waiting for a
response. Scully nodded her head and smiled faintly.
"Thanks.." As she gathered her stuff, her stomach started to
churn again, and she willed it to settle down. "Bye, I'll see you
tomorrow," she called over her shoulder. Agent Taylor just waved, and
got back to work.

When Dana got home, she changed into jeans and a sweatshirt, then
curled up with a book. Even though she wasn't feeling well, she
couldn't help but laugh at Taylor's trip-up over her name. She got
that a lot. Even she and Fox were still working on using each other's
first names. More often then not, they still slipped into their
familiar last names.
After about an hour, the nausea had passed, and she felt
remarkably better. She called Agent Taylor to see if he needed her to
come back in, but he said no. With almost 8 hours left before Fox
came home, she decided to throw some clothes in the wash and clean up.
By lunch time, Dana had nothing left to do, so she called Fox.

"Mulder," her husband said when he answered his phone.
"Hi, Fox," Dana smiled, stressing 'Fox.' She could practically
feel his smile over the phone. "I was just wondering if I could meet
you somewhere for lunch."
Fox sighed, slumping down in his chair. "I wish I could Dana,
but we're at a crucial point in this case. We're *this close* to
catching this bastard. So, no, I can't meet you for lunch." After
pausing for a moment, he smiled. "Can I take a rain check?"
Shaking her head, Dana laughed. "Anytime, anytime. I'd better
let you get back to work, I'll see you at 6:00." They were about to
hang up when she made one last comment. "Oh, Don't be late tonight,
I'm in a funny...mood, you never know what I'll have planned." Then,
hanging up, she smiled, knowing that Mulder's **No, Fox's** mind would
be mush for the next few minutes.

The rest of the day passed uneventfully, and rather slowly; Dana
was bored out of her mind. Her teaching/labwork job at Quantico may
be boring, but at least it was something. Around 6:00, Fox walked in
the door, tossing his jacket onto the couch. Dana came to greet him,
but he didn't look happy. Actually, he looked rather pissed off.
"Uh, what's wrong Fox?"
"Why didn't you tell me you weren't feeling well this morning?"
he scowled at her. Dana tried to think of something to say, wondering
how he found out, but Fox jumped in. "Oh, I ran into Agent Taylor in
the garage. He told me to tell you that he hopes you're feeling
better tomorrow."
Turning and walking into the kitchen, Dana pulled some steaks out
of the oven. "Mulder, it was just a bug or something. To tell you
the truth, I'm fine. I've felt fine ever since I rested this
morning." At his questioning stare, she continued. "Really Mulder,
Fox, I'm fine..."
Fox stepped forward and pulled Dana into a hug, and sighed,
kissing her forehead. "If you say so, but next time, could you let me
know? I was worried, that's all. I'm sorry I got so mad, it's been a
stressful day..."
Placing a kiss on his cheek, Dana nodded. "Don't worry, next
time I'll tell you when I'm not feeling well. Come on, Dinner's eady."

At breakfast the next morning, Fox noticed that Dana wasn't
really eating. "Scully, Dana, are you feeling okay?" He was worried
that this "little bug" would end up being not so little.Dana didn't
answer right away, and after a second, she got up and rushed into the
kitchen. When Fox hurried in there, he found her bent over the sink,
emptying the meager contents of her stomach. "Oh Dana," he rubbed
her back, and after a moment she stood up and rinsed out her mouth.
"I'm okay now, I think." She sighed. Fox was still rubbing her
back, and she leaned into him. "I still think this is just a bug I
picked up. It'll go away soon." When she noticed Fox closely
scrutinizing her, she sighed. "I suppose I should go see the
doctor..." If there was one thing she hated, it was going to the
doctor.
Fox nodded and smiled softly. "That would make me feel a lot
better..." Fifteen minutes later she had an appointment made for
10:30, and Fox was heading out the door. "I'll see you when I get
home Dana. Oh, make sure and call me if you need anything." He left,
and Dana just shook her head. **He can be so sweet sometimes...**
The morning was spent cleaning up and reading. Around 10:00, she
forced herself to put on shoes and leave for her appointment. **This
is really unnecissary..but it couldn't hurt.** She thought to herself.

At 11:00, Dana was sitting in Doctor Kelly Dorland's office. She
was waiting for a few simple tests to come back, then she could go.
Finally, after what seemed like ages, Dr. Kelly walked in. Dana stood
up and smiled. "So, what do I have, the flu??" She became confused
when the doctor started to laugh. "What?"
"Dana, you do not have the flu, believe me. Well, it's quite far
from that actually." She paused and Dana tilted her head to tell her
to go on. "Dana, you're pregnant." As soon as Dana heard that, her
world turned upside down.
"Wha-What? Are you sure, I mean...I'm not-not supposed to be
able to have children." She felt like laughing and crying at the same
time. Dr. Kelly nodded and handed Dana a piece of paper.
     "Here's a prescription for some Pre-natal vitamins. If you're
nausea gets too bad, call me, and I can get you some medicine to help
fix that." The doctor smiled and squeezed Dana's hand.
"Congratulations Dana. If you need anything, just call me." Dr.
Kelly had known Dana and Fox only a few months, but she already had a
fondness for the couple.

On the way home, Dana was in a fog. She was having trouble
contemplating all the changes that would happen...Or how Fox would
react. As soon as she got home, she grabbed the phone and dialed
Fox's cell phone number. When he answered, she started talking
right away. "Fox, can you meet me for lunch...It's- It's really
important for me to talk to you as soon as possible."
Fox heard his wife, and knew something had happened. "Um, yeah,
I can come home for lunch. Dana..are you okay, is anything wrong?"
She answered slowly and tried to think of something to say. "Uh,
yeah, I'm okay, I think...I just-just need to talk to you."
Fox nodded into the phone and sighed. "Don't worry. I'll be
there in about 20 minutes, okay?"
     "Okay."
     "I love you Dana."
     "Love you too Fox, bye."
     "Bye."

He hung up and grabbed his coat, with dozens of worries running
through his mind.

Those twenty minutes that Dana waited seemed like hours to her.
She sat on the couch twirling a pencil. She'd done some thinking, and
knew that this wasn't a bad thing. She'd always wanted children, she
just hadn't expected one, especially not now. A smile had spread
across her face by the time Fox walked in the door.

Rushing into the apartment, Fox found Dana sitting on the couch,
smiling. "Dana, what's up?" She jumped up and threw her arms around
his neck.
"Oh Fox, I-I'm pregnant, we're going to have a baby.." She
blurted this out and pulled away, waiting to see his expression. It
was definitely a "Mulder" expression. A mixture of joy, confusion,
and a little worry.
Sitting on the couch, he pulled her down next to him. "Are you
sure, I mean, we thought..." She interrupted him was a slow kiss on
his lips. When she pulled away, he smiled. "I suppose that's a
Yes...." Dana nodded and crawled into his lap, resting her head on
her chest. She grabbed his hand and placed it over her stomach.
"We're going to have a baby, our baby..." Tears were forming in
her eyes, and Fox gently wiped them away.
"Oh Dana, I'm so happy, we'll have a real family, we'll be
parents." He gently kissed her and smiled. "And I'm sure you'll be a
wonderful mom.." Dana grinned and wrapped her arms around him.
Fox sighed. "And as much as I'd love to spend the rest of the
day holding you, I've got to go back to work. Robertson specifically
told me that he's have my ass if I wasn't back by 1:00." He stopped
and stood up. "I know that's not that much time, but we're about to
wrap up this case..."
Dana nodded her head and shrugged.
"Don't worry about it, I'll be fine....We'll be fine," she smiled
patting her stomach. "Go to work. I'll see you tonight....We can
celebrate properly then." Fox left and Dana sunk down into the couch,
grinning. **I'm having a baby...**

2 days later
Margaret Scully's House

"Dana, Fox, I'm so glad you could come." Maggie ushered them into
her house and hung up their coats. Bill and Charlie were both in town
for business, and she decided that everyone needed to get together for
a dinner. "Come on, Come on, everyone else is here." They all walked
into the living room.
Dana walked up to her brothers and gave them each a hug. "Hi
Bill, Charlie, It's great to see you guys again." She grinned at
Charlie who had tried to tickle her, then sat down with Fox on the
love seat. She was practically in his lap.
Just as everyone was getting comfortable, Maggie called out from
the dining room. "Come in here you guys, dinner's ready." Everyone
filed to the table and found there seats. Dana sat between Fox and
Charlie, Bill sat on the other side of Charlie, and their mom sat
between Fox and Bill. A yummy-looking dinner of spaghetti, rolls, and
wine was on the table.
After they said grace, Dana looked up at her mom and smiled.
"Um, I want to tell everyone something." She looked at Fox for
support, and he nodded his head. "Well, I can't have any wine
tonight...I'm pregnant."
Maggie's face immediately lit up and she grinned. "Oh my gosh
Dana, I can't believe it!! You know, I though you were glowing
tonight.." She got up and gave Dana and Fox both hugs, and squeezed
her shoulder. "Congratulations honey."
Charlie was also smiling, and he gave her a hug too. "I'm happy
for you Dana, congrats." A look of confusion was crossing his face at
the same time. "Dana, I-I thought you told me that you
couldn't...have kids..." Everyone looked at her and she shrugged.
"Honestly, I don't know what to say. They must have been wrong.
I mean, there's no doubt that I'm having a baby..." She smiled and
squeezed Mulder's hand. Bill who had been silent the whole time gave
a grim smile in Dana's direction.
"Congratulations Dana..." he was still having trouble with the
fact that his sister and Fox Mulder were married, and that actually
did what married couples do. The thought made his stomach turn.
However, he kept any thoughts like that to himself, because after his
little "spat" at their wedding, Dana was liable to kick his ass if he
caused any more trouble. ...His mother probably would too.

After dinner everyone sat in the living room talking. Maggie
couldn't quit fussing over Dana, and Charlie watched with amusement.
By the time that everyone was ready to go home, Dana was exhausted.
She embraced Bill and smiled. Letting go, she looked up him, holding
his arm. "I want to thank you Bill. I know you don't
exactly...approve of Mulder, but It was really great to see you
tonight."
Bill softened a little and he gave her a small smile back.
"Dana, I will never get along with Mulder, but he seems to make you
happy.. and I respect that. You look better then you have in
years..." He gave her one last hug, then she walked towards the door.
"Bye Bill, I love you. Tell Terra and Matthew that I send my
love..." She waved.
"Bye Dana." Bill watched his little sister get in the car, and
shook his head. **I'll never be able to not love you...even if you
marry the biggest ass in the world.**

That night, Dana fell asleep wrapped in Fox's arms. He watched
her sleep and gently kissed her. He had never thought that he could
be this happy...the most wonderful wife in the world, a baby on the
way. As he layed there in the dark, he couldn't help but feel like
the luckiest man alive.
