Speech Therapy

26th August 2003.

Jasmine normally has Speech Therapy every week, but Jasmine is improving a lot in her speech, Jasmine is now seeing Lyn twice a month. I have taken a few photos from today’s session, just to get an idea how speech therapy works.

Lyn has a different varties of toys, which is all stored into a box, until the next activity is ready.

1. House Toy –
A. Object of the game: Place the plastic man on top on the house, position him on top between the wooden nails, and he then falls thru the “wooden nails” from his arms, until he reaches the bottom.

Jasmine used the words ""OPEN (to open the jar to remove the man). Lyn would ask Jasmine, What colour man would you like? Red, Green or yellow? Jasmine would then pick her colour man and use it. When all the men have gone, Jasmine says, “finish”, and then they pack up that toy before pulling out the next.

Frog in Pond(EG: Jack in Box).

A.Object of the game: A small container is a hollow cylinder, the frog must be pushed down right to the bottom of the cylinder, once the lid is opened the frog jumps out.

Lyn would ask questions like “where’s the frog”?
Jasmine would point to the jar and say, “OPEN”. Once this is opened, the frog is then put in the pond.
Jasmine says, “READY, SETTY, GO and the frog leaps out. Lyn would also use some phrases such as “Is the frog in the pond”? Or “Are you ready yet’? Jasmine repeats some words that Lyn says, like a little parrot, other times she can have a conversation in her own baby language still mixed in with some English Words.

3. Drawing

A. Drawing on Blank paper, to use the textas, you have to open the plastic bottle that they are in.

Once the paper is on the table, Lyn would ask, “Where are the textas”? Jasmine would go to the Box and pull out the textas, and place them in front of Lyn. Lyn would pick up the textas and say, “What colour would you like”? Jasmine would say “OPEN TEXTAS”. The textas will be opened before drawing.
Lyn would ask Jasmine what to draw, or what colour to use. Jasmine stated she wanted a house. Lyn asked her,” What would be in the house”? Jasmine would state a dog or a cat. Lyn drew the animal, while jasmine done her own drawing. Once the texta was used, Jasmine would have to say OPEN to get the next texta out before using it.

5.Bubbles

A. Object of the game: Dip the applicator into the bubble detergent and blow, making bubbles. Applicator in Jar.

Jasmines loves blowing bubbles, she stomps and claps her hands to squash them. She grabs the jar and says OPEN straight away. Once its opened Lyn gives her the option on going first. Asking the question “Who’s goes first’? Jasmine or Lyn? In which Jasmine will reply “Jasmine” or “Lyn”. And they would start to blow bubbles. Lyn would try and get jasmine to blow but she likes more to watch, and blow maybe twice.

6.Cars

A. Object of the game: Pull the string at the back of the material car, let go of the string and watch the car vibrate.

Jasmine says, “OPEN” to get the cars out. Lyn gets a blue car and Jasmine gets the red one. Once Lyn states “ Pull the string”. Jasmine pulls it and watches the car. Lyn pulls hers and lets it go. Lyn also suggests that they have car races. This activity is a 10 second amusement for Jasmine :-)

7.Puzzles (eg: Jigsaw)

A. Object of the game: Put all the pieces in the appriotate shape on the wooden board.

All the shapes are placed on the table, away from the board. Lyn passes a piece at a time and gives it to Jasmine, saying” What colour is it”? Jasmine would respond to the colour, and Lyn would help her put that piece on the board. Lyn would get the 2nd piece out, and say “This one feels bumpy”. Others words were used for this puzzle. “Smooth, bumpy, rough, triangle (shape) and heart. Each piece was felt by Jasmine, before placing on the board. Once the jigsaw was completed the next activity was on.

8.Book

A. Object of the game: Flip the pages and read the book.

Once Lyn placed the book on the table Jasmine automatically turned the page. Lyn would ask jasmine to turn the page, each time. Lyn would say things from the book,” like the sun is out, or the bear is being silly.”
Jasmine would respond, but today she just turned those pages.

Jasmine also tried a pop up book, Lyn would ask “Who’s behind the door, open the flap, and reveal, saying who’s behind the door so jasmine can view who is it, check out the colours, before turning the page.
