Have You Ever

(untitled) “Hey Jellybean,” Justin said to Lyndsey, while clicking the controls to his Nintendo, “Can you grab me a coke?”

“Sure thing Curly,” She responded. Lyndsey hopped up from the chair she was sitting on, and walked into the kitchen just as the phone rang.

“Hello? Oh hi Jill!” Lyndsey replied.

“Hey. Feel like going to the movies? Chris and I are going so we thought we’d invite you and Justin,” Jill explained.

“Sounds good, if I can peel him away from his Nintendo. I guess I’ll tell him to give Christine a call. He’ll want her to come,” Lyndsey stated, referring to Justin’s girlfriend.

“The more the merrier,” Jill said, “See ya!”

“Bye,” Lyndsey said, hanging up, and walking back in the room Lyndsey tossed Justin a Coke and said, “That was Jill. She and Chris invited us to the movies.”

“Great! Let’s go,” He said, standing up.

“Aren’t you going to call Christine?” Lyndsey asked.

“Of course,” Justin mumbled, turning back and picking up the phone. After he invited Christine they left for the movies.

“Hey Natalie!” Lyndsey exclaimed when she saw their friends Natalie and her boyfriend Jc at the movies, “I didn’t know you were coming.”

“We were here when Jill and Chris came,” Jc explained.

“Where’s Justin?” Natalie asked.

“Oh, he went to get Christine some snacks,” Lyndsey answered, as Justin walked up behind her with his arms over Christine’s shoulder and passes Lyndsey a box.

“Here ya go Jellybean,” Justin smiled, handing her a box of jellybeans.

“Thanks,” She giggled, sitting between Jc and Justin.

Jc had his arm around Natalie as her head rested on his shoulder, and Justin had his arm around Christine as she kept kissing his neck.

Lyndsey frowned, ‘I don’t mind watching Jc and Natalie, but I can’t stand watching Justin being all kissy-kissy with Christine. Who am I kidding? Justin and I are friends.

He could never like me. He’ll probably end up marrying Christine and have kids, ugh,’ Lyndsey thought as she looked down at her jellybeans and smiled. After the movie Lyndsey walked out with Jill and Chris. Followed by Natalie and Jc. Justin and Christine were walking slow holding hands.

“What’s wrong?” Jill whispered to Lyndsey.

Lyndsey shook her head and turned around to Justin kissing Christine goodbye and rolled her eyes.

Jill noticed and her eyes grew wide, “Justin!” She whispered loudly.

“Shhh,” Responded Lyndsey.

Jill pretended to zip up her lips, as they all kept walking. Justin kissed Christine and ran to catch up with the others, and they walked got in the car to go home.

“So…” Justin said.

“So, uh…you and Christine are getting serious now aren’t you?” Lyndsey asked.

“Well, not too serious,” He replied, looking out the window.

“She’s really nice,” Lyndsey said.

“Yeah, yeah she is,” He answered quietly as he drove Lyndsey home.

ONE WEEK LATER

Justin, Lyndsey, and their friends Rhonda, Joey, Carolyn and Lance were all cruising the mall together.

“I need a new pair of sneakers,” Justin announced.

“Don’t you think 100 pairs is enough?” Rhonda asked him laughing.

“You can never have too many,” He smiled, as Lyndsey started laughing, as she followed him into the shoe store.

After he was finished they all went into the Department store. They split up. Justin and Lyndsey went to the toy section.

“Look at all these musical, noisy toys,” Justin smiled, “Wouldn’t it be a shame if someone set them all off?”

“No, you wouldn’t,” Lyndsey started.

“I would,” Justin said, going down the row, setting off all the toys as a few fell off the shelf. Lyndsey and Justin bolted into another section, as they were in tears laughing so hard.

“You could get us banned,” Lyndsey said, punching Justin lightly in the arm and he grabbed her wrist. They stopped laughing and looked each other in the eyes.

“I, uh,” Justin broke away as a security person came up to them.

“Excuse me. Did you seen any young teens go by? They seemed to have set off all the toys,” He asked them.

Lyndsey’s face turned red as she tried to keep from bursting into laughter. With a straight face Justin answered, “No sir. I’m sorry. I didn’t see anyone.”

“Alright. Thank you,” The man said walking away, as Lyndsey cracked. She leaned over laughing.

“You’re full of beans today,” Justin smiled.

“Jellybeans,” She responded, smiling, as they left to meet up with everyone. Rhonda had her arm around Joey, being a flirt, as they all met up.

“What’d you guys do?” Carolyn asked Lyndsey.

“Oh nothing,” Lyndsey smiled.

“Well, that pretty much means Justin got into some trouble,” Lance laughed.

“Or almost did,” Joey finished.

“Me? Trouble? Nah,” He winked at Lyndsey.

When Lyndsey got home she called Jill and told Jill everything. “Don’t worry, I won’t say anything,” Jill reassured Lyndsey.

“Thanks,” She answered.

“But from what you told me today, when you both froze…” Jill paused.

“Yeah?” Lyndsey asked.

“It seems like there’s chemistry between you. If I didn’t know it, I’d think he likes you,” Jill gushed.

“No. No! No. He’s with Christine,” Lyndsey said, “He always will be,” She frowned.

(Meanwhile)

As Justin walked in the door, he paused, then sighed. He went over to the phone, picked it up and dialed Christine’s number.

“Hi Christine? There’s something I need to tell you.”

THE NEXT DAY

“They what?” Lyndsey exclaimed, dropping her glass, as it shattered into tiny pieces.

“Justin and Christine broke up,” Jill repeated, as there was a knock on the door. Lyndsey, still frozen, motioned for Jill to get the door. Everyone walked in, including Justin.

“Hey, what happened?” Justin asked, as he saw Lyndsey standing in glass.

“Oh, it slipped,” She said, with a dumbfounded look on her face, as Justin helped her clean up the mess.

Everyone sat in the den and watched a movie. Lyndsey shivered and Justin grabbed a blanket and put it over her and put his arms around her.

‘Oh my gosh!’ Lyndsey freaked in her head.

“So Justin? What happened with you and Christine?” Lance asked. Justin took his arms away and stoop up.

“Nothing. It just wasn’t working,” He replied, leaving the room. Jill looked at Lyndsey with a smile on her face.

Everyone followed him and Jc asked, “What’d you mean? Things were getting serious.”

“No, they weren’t. Look. Things just weren’t working, ok?” He exclaimed, walking outside. Lyndsey decided to follow him.

“Are you ok?” She asked.

“Yeah, I’m sorry. I’m not trying to sound mean. Things just weren’t working,” He said, staring at her, “I gotta go,” he gave her a hug and left. Lyndsey walked back inside to the others.

“I wonder what’s going on?” Jill said.

“What do you mean? He said things weren’t working,” Lyndsey said puzzled.

“I think there’s more to it,” Jill replied.

“I thought they would be together forever. They seemed so close,” Lance stated.

“So did I,” Mumbled Lyndsey, but deep down inside she was happy that she wouldn’t have to see Justin with another girl anymore.

Jill walked by and smiled, “He’s free now. You can go for him,” She whispered. Lyndsey’s eyes grew wide and she shook her head, “Uh uh!” She whispered back, “He could never like me as more than a friend.” Jill smiled and shook her head, and sighed.

“Maybe we should just take Justin’s word on this and let it alone,” Joey decided, resting his arm on Rhonda’s shoulder.

“Good idea,” Jc answered, “Come on I’ll take you to dinner,” He continues, holding Natalie’s hand heading for the door.

“Bye guys!” They called out.

Later on when everyone went home, Lyndsey sat down on her bed and began thinking. ‘He’s probably hurting right now, and I shouldn’t feel happy, but I do,” She thought, ‘But I know Justin doesn’t feel the same as I do. I’m just a ‘bud’. One of ‘the guys’. I just have to forget my feelings,’ she continued to think as she lay down on her bed, turned over and feel asleep.

ONE WEEK LATER

Lyndsey, Justin, Joey, Rhonda, Chris and Jill went to the park to shoot some hoops at the local court.

“We’re gonna kick butt!” Justin announced.

“Yeah, kick your own, when you lose,” Chris replied.

“Oohhh,” Rhonda teased.

Justin grabbed the ball from Joey and slam dunked it, “Bring it on,” He laughed out. After a while everyone stopped while Lyndsey and Justin started to shoot around. Lyndsey got the ball and Justin grabbed her and started to tickle her until she came crashing to the ground laughing.

Justin looked down at her, into he eyes. Lyndsey looked into Justin’s deep blue eyes and quickly got up and grabbed the ball. Justin grabbed her and lifted her up so she could dunk it in. Lyndsey was laughing as she walked back to the others.

“You looked pretty cozy out there,” Jill gushed.

“We were just playing basketball,” Lyndsey replied.

“Except when you stopped to stare into each other’s eyes,” Jill said. Lyndsey smiled, “Just like that day at the mall.” Justin came up behind them and handed Lyndsey and Jill a drink.

“Drink up. I haven’t finished kicking butt yet,” He laughed. After another 2 hours of playing everyone collapsed down on the bench.

“Tired?” Justin asked.

“Exhausted! We’ve been playing for hours,” Jill complained.

“Let’s go get some ice cream,” Justin said. They all walked to the ice cream parlor.

“One scoop of cotton candy. One scoop of chocolate peanut butter. In a cup,” Lyndsey and Justin said simultaneously.

They turned red, when everyone turned to look at them. They ate their ice cream sitting by a pond, on some rocks.

“Is it good?” Justin joked.

“I dunno, let me try yours,” She giggled, stealing some of Justin’s.

Justin stole some of hers, and they each started eating out of each other’s. After when it started to get dark, they all walked home. Lyndsey’s house was closest, so when they got to her house they stopped to say goodbye. Justin gave her a big hug, and Lyndsey looked over at Jill to see a big smile on her face. She hugged the others and went inside. Lyndsey thought that Jill was crazy, and that Justin would never like her, so she sighed and headed up the stairs for bed.

TWO WEEKS LATER

Lyndsey was over at Justin’s house playing Nintendo.

“Hey, no fair you cheated,” Lyndsey giggled.

“No I didn’t,” Justin said in a stern voice that caused Lyndsey’s smile to fade. Justin had a fazed look on his face as he got up and walked into the kitchen. Lyndsey followed and asked, “What’s wrong?”

“Nothing. Why does everyone always think something’s wrong?” He exclaimed.

“There is. I can tell. I’m your friend. You can tell me,” Lyndsey explained, wondering why Justin seemed so angry.

“It doesn’t seem like any of my friends care. Nothing is wrong. Why does everyone badger me, thinking that something’s wrong with me? I can deal with things myself!” Justin yelled.

“Ok! Fine! There’s no need to scream at me! Just because you and Christine broke up, and your friends were concerned doesn’t mean we were badgering you. Obviously, there’s a reason for all this! If you’re mad about Christine just call her, get back together, get married or whatever! We’ll all leave you 2 alone!” Lyndsey yelled upset.

“Christine?! Christine?! You think this is about Christine?” Justin screamed.

“Yeah! I do!” Lyndsey yelled back, with tears in her eyes.

“I don’t care about Christine! I broke up with her because of you!” He blurted out. Lyndsey was turned, but when she heard that she turned back, and there was complete silence.

Justin wiped a tear from Lyndsey’s check and said, “I don’t care about anyone else. I love you,” He said.

Lyndsey stuttered and said, “This is why you’ve been so upset? I…” She said dumbfounded.

“I’m sorry. It’s been bottled up inside, I couldn’t stand it anymore, but I never should have said it to you, so pretend I never said it,” Justin replied walking away.

“But I love you,” Lyndsey smiled. Justin turned and grinned, “You do?”

“I always have, I always did, I always will love you,” She said.

“I love you so much,” Justin whispered as he took her in his arms and they embraced and shared a long passionate kiss. They stopped and gazed into each other’s eyes for a third time.

“We’ve been in this position before,” Lyndsey said.

“Except this time it feels right,” Justin said, taking her hand and kissing it, and hugging her tight.

“I love you,” He whispered.

“I love you too,” She whispered back.

THE NEXT AFTERNOON

Everyone met at the roller rink, to hear Justin’s big announcement, which he said he was going to make.

“So what’s the news?” Carolyn asked, when everyone had arrived.

“I’m dating someone new,” He begun.

“Cool, who is she?” Jc asked, as Jill turned to Lyndsey with a frown, expecting her to look upset.

“Lyndsey,” Justin smiled, taking her hand.

“It’s about time!” Jill exclaimed, “I’m so happy for you two.” Everyone was shocked as they said that they make a great couple.

“I have one more surprise. You guys go on the floor. I’ll be there in a minute,” Justin said, kissing Lyndsey’s cheek, before everyone went on.

Justin went off and when he came back to the others he held Lyndsey’s hand. A spotlight came on and the rink went dark. The dj said, “This song goes to Lyndsey from Justin. He wants you to know just how much he loves you,” as the song ‘Have You Ever’ by Brandy came on.

“Awe,” Lyndsey gushed, “Thank you,” She said, kissing his cheek. The others skated together, as Lyndsey and Justin skated alone.

When the words ‘have you ever loved somebody it makes you cry’ came, Justin whispered, “All these words are true about us.” Lyndsey smiled. She’d never been happier in her entire life.
