True Feelings

Chapter 1

“The fair’s going to be great!” Jill exclaimed.

“I’ve lived here in Harmony for two weeks and I just love it! I’ll meet lots of people tonight!” Lyndsey replied, happily.

“And tons of guys,” Jill finished, grinning.

“You have a guy, now I need to search,” Lyndsey teased.

“Well Chris is coming tonight, and so are Carolyn and Fred,” Jill explained.

“Are you ready for fun?” Lyndsey asked, and Jill nodded.

(At the carnival)

DING! DING! DING!

“Here you go,” Chris smiled, handing Jill a teddy bear holding a heart saying “I love you”, then giving her a peck on the cheek.

“Thanks hun,” She blushed, “Look Lynds,” She continued.

Lyndsey was staring in another direction, not paying attention. “Who is that?” Lyndsey gushed.

“That’s Miguel Lopez-Fitzgerald. Haven’t you seen him at school?” Carolyn asked.

“No, but I wish I had,” She continued to stare and Miguel turned back around and stared back, and Lyndsey quickly turned away.

“Hey guys,” A girl said walking up to them.

“Lyndsey, this is Jessica Bennett and over there somewhere is her sister Kay,” Fred introduced them.

“My evil sister,” Jessica teased, “So what are you guys up to?”

“Just came for fun,” Lyndsey said.

For the next few hours they all hung out, but Lyndsey wasn’t paying much attention. “You’ve had your eyes on Miguel the whole night,” Jill teased.

“Miguel? I’m good friends with him. I’ll introduce you. You can hook up with him,” Jessica gushed, as everyone walked over to Miguel who was standing with Jessica’s sister Kay and her friends Anna and Carrie.

“How long have you been here in Harmony?” Miguel asked, smiling, after they were introduced.

Lyndsey’s heart was pounding. “About two weeks, “She replied.

“You didn’t win any prizes?” He asked, turning around, “Here I’ll win you some.”

Miguel went to the game to test your strength and won a huge teddy bear and gave it to Lyndsey. “Thanks,” She blushed.

Kay frowned and gave Lyndsey the evil eye. ‘I’ve loved Miguel forever. I’m going to get rid of Ms. Priss,” Kay thought.

“I still need to find out what classes I’m in. I’ve only had a tour of the school,” Lyndsey explained.

“I hope we’re in the same classes,” Miguel answered looking deep into Lyndsey’s eyes.

“I hope so too,” Lyndsey replied, turning red.

“She seems nice,” Carrie whispered.

“Yeah,” Anna agreed.

Kay pulled them aside, “Gimme a break. Ms. Goodie two shoes better back off. I’ve known Miguel my whole life. He’s mine,” Kay stated, in a matter of fact voice, giving Lyndsey a dirty look.

“Well, we’ll see you at school Monday morning,” Anna replied when Jill, Fred, Carolyn, Chris and Lyndsey had to leave.

“Not if we’re lucky,” Kay muttered, then Carrie nudged Kay in the stomach.

“Bye,” Miguel said in a sweet, soft voice.

“Bye,” Lyndsey smiled and waved.

“Wooo, love at first sight eh Lynds?” Carolyn gushed.

‘Maybe?’ Lyndsey thought.

Monday Morning

“Hey Jessica!” Lyndsey said walking up with Jill to Jessica’s locker.

“Hey! Did you get your classes? Let’s see!” She exclaimed, “Oh, we have 3 classes together! Let’s see if you’re in Miguel’s classes,” Jessica smiled.

“He seems really nice, and of course being gorgeous is nice too,” Lyndsey confessed.

“And he likes you. Just watch out for my evil sister,” Jessica warned.

“Kay? But she’s so nice?” Lyndsey wondered aloud.

“She’s always had a thing for Miguel ever since they were little kids. He thinks of her as a baseball pal, but I think he likes you,” Jessica admitted.

“I don’t know about that, but if me liking Miguel offends Kay,” Lyndsey started to say.

“No don’t finish. Kay needs to stop thinking that Miguel is hers,” Jessica replied. Lyndsey smiled and nodded, “Ok.”

“Hi Lyndsey,” Miguel said as he walked up, followed by Kay, Anna and Carrie and his friend Reese.

“Hi Miguel,” She replied.

“May I see your schedule?” Miguel asked, taking it from her.

“Great! We have 5 classes together!” He exclaimed excitedly.

Miguel, Kay, Reese and Lyndsey all walked to their first class. “Hey Reese. Isn’t Lyndsey great? I think she’s the one. I feel so close to her even though we just met,” Miguel whispered happily, staring over at Lyndsey.

“That’s great! I think she likes you too,” Reese answered.

Kay stared at Miguel with an angry look on her face. ‘What does he see in her? He’s known me forever. He should be mine,’ Kay silently thought to herself.

After class Lyndsey stayed behind to get some work. “Kay?” Lyndsey called out, noticing Kay leaving last.

“Yeah?” Kay answered, trying to be nice.

“Where does Miguel usually go after school? Maybe we can hang out?” She suggested.

‘Quick think of something so I can be alone with Miguel without ‘her’ near us!’ Kay thought.

“Um, I think Miguel’s gone home, and uh we sometimes meet up later,” Kay lied in an innocent voice, fully aware that Miguel was in the gym for basketball practice.

“Oh thanks. Well do you wanna walk home together?” Lyndsey asked.

“Um, you’d better go ahead. I have to go upstairs to my locker,” Kay lied again, as they left the classroom.

“Hey Lyndsey! Are you gonna come watch Miguel at basketball practice?” Jessica asked, walking up.

“I thought he went home. Well that’s what Kay thought,” Lyndsey stated.

“Oops, I must have forgotten,” Kay said, trying to cover up.

Jessica glared at her sister, “I’m sure. Let’s go,” She continued, smiling, grabbing Lyndsey’s arm and leading her to the gym.

“Hey! Thanks for coming to watch,” Miguel exclaimed, happy to see Lyndsey, running off to play in the game.

“Do you like it here in Harmony?” Jessica asked.

“Oh yeah, I love it,” Lyndsey answered, staring at Miguel, who stared back and winked at her, causing her to blush.

Chapter2 (2 weeks later, after school)

“We have to do something to get rid of…Lyndsey hi!” Kay started to say but stopped because Lyndsey walked up.

“Where is everyone?” Lyndsey asked, curiously.

“I’m not sure, but tonight we’re all going to the movies at 7, if you wanna meet us there?” Kay said, with an evil smile on her face.

“Sure. Sounds fun!” Lyndsey exclaimed, “See ya tonight,” and she walked away.

“Now why did you do that?” Anna asked.

“We’re not going to the movies,” Carrie said.

“Well duh. Tonight I can hang out with Miguel without little princess lurking around,” Kay grinned.

“You’re mean Kay, mean,” Carrie teased but Kay just flashed a smile.

That night

‘Where could they be?’ Lyndsey wondered standing outside the theatre, ‘Maybe they meant a different theatre?’

Lyndsey waited for an hour but nobody showed. When Lyndsey got back she walked down to her house and saw Jessica walking down the street. “Jessica!? Where were you guys!?” Lyndsey asked.

“What do you mean?” Jessica wondered.

“Kay said we were all meeting at the movies at 7,” Lyndsey explained.

“Well, Kay means trouble. This is one of her many lies,” Jessica admitted.

Lyndsey sighed, “Why does she hate me?”

“She doesn’t. She just has an obsession with Miguel,” Jessica explained.

Lyndsey just sighed, as Kay came walking down the street. “Hi. Sorry I forgot to call you about us not going to the movies. It just slipped my mind,” Kay lied.

“It’s ok,” Lyndsey replied, softly.

“Where are you off to?” Jessica demanded.

“None of your business,” Kay said in a mean voice, “But if you must know, I’m going over to Miguel’s,” She continued.

“Cool. Sounds like fun. Let’s go Lyndsey,” Jessica grinned, turning and heading towards Miguel’s house.

Whey they arrived at Miguel’s his mother Pilar answered the door. “Oh, hello Jessica. This must be Lyndsey. I’ve heard so much about you,” She said politely.

“Really?” Lyndsey asked.

“Miguel’s told me so much about you,” She replied as Miguel walked up behind them.

“Oh, Mama, this is Lyndsey,” Miguel said, introducing them.

“We’ve already met,” Pilar said nicely.

“I didn’t know you guys were coming. I thought Kay was coming over to hang out,” Miguel said.

“Me too,” Kay muttered, and Jessica gave her a dirty look.

“We met up with Kay and decided to come visit,” Lyndsey explained.

“I’m glad you did,” Miguel replied staring at Lyndsey.

Everyone walked into the living room and Jessica turned on the radio. “You know, there’s a dance at the Harmony community centre tomorrow night? Wanna go with me?” Miguel asked Lyndsey.

“Sure,” She replied blushing.

“We’ll have a blast,” Miguel insisted, smiling.

“Cool Miguel. I’m going too, with Anna and Carrie. We’ll hang out with you,” Kay said, butting in.

“Um, I’ll be coming too. I think everyone in Harmony will be there,” Jessica said, exaggerating a bit, eyeing her sister.

“I can’t wait,” Miguel replied, watching Lyndsey.

Chapter 3 (The next evening)

Mom and Dad will never let you wear that!” Jessica yelled as she barged into Kay’s room to see her wearing a short revealing red dress.

“Not if they don’t see me,” She answered, and saw Jessica smiled and continued, “Don’t you dare rat me out! Tonight I’m going to attract Miguel. He’ll be mine.”

“You know what, I’ll keep my mouth shut to mom and dad about the dress, if you can call it a dress,” Jessica offered and teased.

“Really? That’s nice of you, for a change,” Kay tried to be nice.

“Don’t hold your breath. I won’t say anything because I want to see you make a fool of yourself in front of Miguel. Anyway he likes Lyndsey so get over it,” Jessica laughed, crossing her arms.

“He does not! He’s mine!” Kay screamed, chasing Jessica down the stairs around the house.

Two hours later

“This is it. Tonight, Miguel will finally be mine,” Kay whispered to Anna and Carrie, “I’m going to tell Miguel I love him.”

Kay smoothed her dress and they walked up to Miguel and said, “Hi Miguel,” In a flirty voice.

“Oh hi Kay. I guess I’m a little underdressed. Anyway did you see Lyndsey out there?” He asked looking around.

“Um, no. Miguel? I have to tell you something,” Kay started to say. Anna and Carrie rolled their eyes and walked away.

“Yeah Kay? What-,” Miguel started, “Lyndsey! Over here!”

“Hey Miguel, you look nice,” Lyndsey gushed

“Thanks, you look great too,” He replied.

Kay looked at her dress and her eyes grew wide. “Nice dress Kay,” Lyndsey said.

“Yeah, thanks,” She muttered.

Jessica walked up and started laughing, “So is he yours?” Jessica joked.

“So what did you have to tell me Kay?” Miguel asked.

Everyone’s eyes turned to Kay “Um,” She paused, thinking, “I uh, heard Jennifer Lopez is coming close by and since I know you like her music I thought maybe we could get tickets when she comes?” Kay surprisingly covered up.

“Yeah. That sounds great!” He said.

“Jennifer Lopez? She’s so cool. I love her music,” Lyndsey said, excitedly.

“Great! You can come with us, if it’s ok with Kay?” He turned to her and she just nodded.

Jessica started laughing again, and walked away just giggling to herself The song ‘All My Life’ by Kc & JoJo came on and Lyndsey and Miguel stared at each other. “Would you like to dance?” He asked.

Lyndsey smiled, “I’d love to.”

They slow danced and when they heard the words ‘all my life I pray for someone like you,’ they danced as close as possible and Lyndsey rested her head on Miguel’s shoulder and closed her eyes and felt as if she were in heaven.

Kay lurked in the background and had an evil look on her face, and suddenly smiled and walked over to the DJ.

“I don’t want to be rude, but I heard people say that the slow songs are boring and that they heard some people groan when this came on,” Kay told him, with a flirty smile.

“Thanks for the tip. Anything for the people,” He replied.

The DJ cur the song half way and turned to a fast song. “The DJ stopped the song,” Miguel said confused.

“Hmm, well we can still dance to this one,” Lyndsey suggested, as she saw Kay looking over with an evil look and realized why the song had stopped.

Lyndsey started to dance with Miguel when Kay walked up and stepped in front of Lyndsey and said, “Can I join?” and she started dancing.

“Sure,” Miguel said and smiled.

‘She’s going to try everything to get rid of me,’ Lyndsey thought.

“What’s my evil sister done now?” Jessica asked after walking over.

Lyndsey explained everything. “Do this,” She said with a sly look and Jessica whispered something in Lyndsey’s ear.

Lyndsey walked over to the DJ and said something, and Kay saw her walking back from the DJ. The music stopped and the DJ said, “Um, Kay Bennett? There’s a phone call from your mother in the front hall.”

Everyone laughed, even Miguel giggled, and Kay stormed out red in the face, but not in time to miss the DJ say, “This song’s dedicated to Miguel from Lyndsey,” and ‘I’ll Never Break Your Heart’ came on.

‘This is war!’ Kay thought.

Jessica and Lyndsey were laughing hysterically when Lyndsey went to dance with Miguel closely. As the song ended Lyndsey explained she had to go home. She hugged Miguel and Jessica and said goodbye to Anna and Carrie.

On her way out Kay stormed up. “What did you think you were doing?” She demanded.

“What?” Lyndsey asked.

“Your little stunt in there. I didn’t do anything to you!” Kay yelled.

“Bull! You lied about the movies, you butted in on our dancing, got the DJ to change the songs!” Lyndsey protested.

“Well you’d better watch out! I’ve known Miguel forever. He’ll stick by me, his friend than you, a stranger,” Kay exclaimed.

“Wanna bet?” Lyndsey said, angry.

Lyndsey frowned and thought all the way home. ‘If she wants war, then that’s when she’ll get. Miguel’s worth it,’ She thought.

When she got home, she changed and sat on her bed and hugged the bear Miguel had won for her at the fair. “He’s the one,” Lyndsey whispered to herself.

Meanwhile

At Miguel’s house, Miguel thought to himself, ‘She’s the one,’ and a smile spread across his face.

Chapter 4 (The next day at school)

“I had such a great time last night,” Miguel sighed, as he talked to Kay and Reese.

“Yeah, you and Lyndsey danced together so much, I bet it was fun,” Reese said.

“The tunes were good,” Kay said.

“I wonder why they cut the slow songs out?” Miguel wondered aloud.

“I dunno,” Kay lied, her eyes turning away.

“Oh hey, there’s Lyndsey,” Miguel said, pointing at the door.

“Hi Miguel,” She said softly, then gave Kay a glare, “I had a great time last night.”

“Me too,” He answered.

“Yeah, it was so fun,” Kay butt in and gave Lyndsey a dirty look.

“Well, see ya later Kay,” Miguel announced, when the bell rang.

“See ya,” Kay said, smiling at Miguel.

After school Kay, Miguel, Anna and Reese were hanging out. “I think I’m gonna leave early, to go see Lyndsey before I go home. I have to ask her a special question,” Miguel started.

“But, um, Miguel,” Kay started, knowing what he would ask her, “I heard Lyndsey was going out shopping right after school. So she won’t be there,” Kay said, making up a lie.

“Oh well, I guess I can ask her tomorrow,” Miguel decided.

Kay thought, ‘Now somehow I have to get Lyndsey to not contact Miguel tonight,’ as Kay thought hard for another deviece plan.

As soon as Kay got home she put her bag down and grabbed the phone, and dialed Lyndsey’s phone number.

“Hi Lyndsey, this is Kay,” she said when Lyndsey answered the phone.

“Kay?” Lyndsey said shocked, “Um, so, um…” “Look I just wanted to say I’m sorry about what I said at the dance. I didn’t mean it, and I’d like to try to be friends,” Kay said, trying to be convincing.

“Me too. I’d like that,” Lyndsey said happily.

For the next hour Kay talked to Lyndsey about Harmony and all about stuff in their lives. “Well I’d better go, I have homework to do,” Lyndsey announced.

“Ok,” Kay said, making a face, “I’ll see you tomorrow at school. Bye!”

“Bye,” Lyndsey said, hanging up, “I’m glad I don’t have to worry about Kay anymore,” She said to herself.

Meanwhile

“Thank God I don’t have to chat up Ms. Goodie Two Shoes any longer. Now Miguel won’t see her and she was too busy talking to me to call Miguel or go to his house,” Kay sighed as she whispered to herself.

The Next Day At School

“Hey Jessica! Have you seen Miguel?” Lyndsey asked when she met up with Jessica, Anna, Carrie and Reese.

“Nope. He’s not here yet,” She responded.

“Hey Anna, Hey Carrie. Brat,” Kay said walking up, looking at Jessica when she said brat.

“Hi Kay,” Lyndsey said nicely.

“Oh, hi,” Kay smiled in a grumpy voice, noticing Miguel coming down the hall, she continued, “Lyndsey come with me. I have to show you something,” Grabbing Lyndsey’s hand pulling her down the hall.

“Hi Miguel,” Anna said, “You just missed Kay.”

“Oh, well I’ll see her later. Where’s Lyndsey?” He asked, excitedly.

“She was just with Kay,” Carrie explained.

“Well, I guess I’ll have to wait,” He said sadly.

Down the hall Lyndsey asked, “What is it you wanted to show me?”

Kay saw Miguel walk to class, “Oh sorry I forgot it at home, nevermind,” and she turned and walked away.

“Kay? Why do you have a problem with me?” Lyndsey asked, following her.

“Shut up,” Kay muttered under her breath.

‘She’s messing with my mind. Next time I won’t listen to her. I love Miguel and I won’t give up on him,’ Lyndsey thought.

After school Miguel spotted Lyndsey waiting by his locker. “Hey, I have barely talked to you the past few days,” Miguel said, “I have to ask you something.”

“Um, sure. Ask me anything,” Lyndsey said and smiled.

“I was wondering…would you? Uh.. Would you be my girlfriend? Like my steady girlfriend? I know we’ve never been on a date but I really like you and it feel like we’ve been friends forever,” Miguel explained.

“Oh Miguel! I’d love to!” Lyndsey exclaimed, giving Miguel a huge hug.

They hugged tight, as Kay walked up. ‘Oh no, it’s too late!’ Kay freaked in her head.

“Kay guess what? Lyndsey and I are a couple. I’ve never been so happy,” Miguel announced.

“That’s great,” Kay lied, wanting to scream aloud.

“Listen, I have to get home. I’ll see you later,” Miguel said, taking Lyndsey’s hand and giving it a kiss and hugger her, and left.

“I warned you,” Kay yelled.

“What?” Lyndsey asked surprised.

“You’re so gullible. We’re not friends. We’re not going to be friends. Miguel is mine, leave him alone!” Kay demanded, pushing her back hard.

“No! He’s not yours, and I’m sick of you harassing me so SHUT UP!” Lyndsey said, shoving Kay into the lockers, as Jessica walked up.

“Kay what have you done now?” She asked.

“Me? You saw that loser push me,” She said.

“She’s not a loser and I know you’ve been trying to get Miguel again,” Jessica said.

“And you won’t! He’s my boyfriend so BACK OFF!” Lyndsey yelled walking away, followed by Jessica.

“Miguel asked you to be his girlfriend?” Jessica asked, with a smile.

“His steady girlfriend,” Lyndsey blushed, “You know, since I first saw him I knew he was the one. He makes me really happy.”

“That’s sweet,” Jessica awed.

“So is Miguel,” Lyndsey gushed with a smile.

Chapter 5 (One week later)

“Lyndsey? Would you go to the prom with me?” Miguel asked, when he, Lyndsey, Jessica, Kay, Anna, Carrie, Carolyn, Jill, Chris and Fred hung out.

“Awe, such a sweet couple,” Jill said, holding Chris’ hand, “It’ll be such a perfect night.”

“Why don’t we all go pick out our dresses later?” Lyndsey suggested.

“Sure,” All the girls agreed.

After school

“Isn’t this nice?” Kay asked, in a slinky red dress, as Lyndsey walked out in the same one, and they shared dirty looks.

“Gross,” They said, simultaneously.

Kay went off so Lyndsey picked out her favourite dress. She stepped out in a royal blue, silk dress flowing to her feet, and buttoned up in the back.. “It’s perfect!” Jill exclaimed.

“Miguel will love it,” Carolyn said.

Lyndsey paid for the dress when Kay came back. “Well I got my dress and since I know Miguel better than YOU, he’ll love mine,” Kay said, holding a cotton short black slinky dress.

“Wanna bet?” Lyndsey said. “Kay. Come on, be nice. Lyndsey picked a beautiful dress,” Anna said.

“Don’t you want Miguel to be happy?” Carrie said.

“Yeah, with me! I have a better plan to make Miguel mine, you’ll see,” Kay said, with an evil grin.

The next day Miguel walked to his locked and found a note stuck inside. It read:

Miguel,

I can’t go to the prom with you. I’m sorry.

Lyndsey

Miguel looked hurt, when Kay walked up.

“What’s wrong?” She asked.

“Lyndsey won’t go to the prom with me and she didn’t give me a reason and couldn’t tell me to my face,” He explained.

“Oh Miguel, I’m sorry,” Kay said sympathetically, giving him a hug, “You’re too good for her. You can hang with me, I won’t let you down,” Kay said.

“Thanks Kay. You’re a real pal,” Miguel replied, “But maybe there’s a misunderstanding. I’ll go talk to her.”

Miguel started to walk and Lyndsey saw him and ran away. Kay watched, and noticed a note in Lyndsey’s hand. ‘Yes! He’ll be mine!’ Kay thought, ‘This plan was brilliant!’

“She ran away,” Miguel said, devastated, “She’s the one. I don’t understand why this is happening.”

Tears formed in Miguel’s eyes. ‘I don’t want to hurt him. He’ll get over her,’ Kay thought.

Down the hall Jill found Lyndsey sitting down, crying. “What happened?” She asked.

“Miguel won’t go to prom. He put a note in my locker saying that he’d rather us not be together,” Lyndsey responded.

“Lynds, I’m sorry, wait,” Jill stated, “Didn’t you tell me that Kay had been threatening you to stay away from Miguel! Maybe,”

“She did it!” Lyndsey’s eyes lit up with anger, “That little…Miguel would never do this. Kay’s gone too far!” Lyndsey screamed.

“Kay? What has she done now?” Jessica asked, walking up.

After Lyndsey explained Kay’s little stunt Jessica said, “Go talk to Miguel, then we’ll find a way to get rid of Kay.”

Lyndsey started to walk up to Miguel when Kay said, “Go away, Miguel doesn’t want to talk to you.”

“No. Thanks Kay but we need to talk,” Miguel said, with puppy dog eyes.

‘NO! This is backfiring!’ Kay freaked.

Jessica grabbed Kay’s arm and pulled her back. “Miguel,” Lyndsey started to say.

“Why?” Miguel asked, “I thought we were going strong?”

“Look,” Lyndsey said, handing Miguel her note.

As he read it he took a deep breath. “So you still like me and want to go to prom?” He asked.

“Of course! Someone--,” Lyndsey started.

Miguel suddenly wrapped his arms around her and hugged her tight. “I don’t wanna lose you,” He whispered and smiled, and then gave her a soft, tender, first kiss. You can practically see sparks fly.

“Miguel,” Lyndsey said, looking deep into his eyes, “Someone did this and I know who,” referring to the notes.

DRRIIINNNNGGGGG!

“We’ll talk after class,” He said.

“Ok,” Lyndsey replied, looking at Kay.

‘No! They’re together! At least she didn’t rat me out yet! Saved by the bell!’ Kay thought, as Lyndsey walked up.

“You!” She said.

“Listen. Please! Don’t tell,” Kay began.

“Oh you bet I’ll tell. I’m sick of you!” Lyndsey said, honestly.

“NO! Please!” Kay begged.

“Too bad!” Lyndsey replied walking away.

‘Oh no! I’m going to lose Miguel! I have to think of something! Quick,’ Kay thought.

Chapter 6 (After school)

“Miguel, I know who did this,” Lyndsey said.

“Who?” He asked.

“PLEASE!” Kay mouthed.

“Kay,” Lyndsey admitted.

“What!?” He answered.

“NO!” Kay cried.

“Kay has been harassing me and I’m sick of it!” Lyndsey yelled.

“Kay, is this true?” Miguel asked.

Kay began to cry, “No! Miguel I only did it because I love you! Please! Don’t hate me!” She exclaimed.

“I don’t want to see you right now. Just get away,” He said, taking Lyndsey’s hand, leaving Kay behind crying.

“I’m sorry. I know you’re best friends, but I couldn’t take it anymore,” Lyndsey said, explaining everything Kay did to her.

“Why does she love me? I’m not perfect, and now we need to rebuild our friendship,” He said.

“I hope you can, but I want to be with you without interference,” Lyndsey replied.

“Me too,” he answered, and then gave her a kiss.

“Are you guys ok?” Jessica asked walking over.

“Yeah. We’re perfect,” Miguel smiled.

“Miguel, please forgive me for not telling you about Kay,” Jessica said.

“It’s ok. You were being a good sister, and you’re a good friend,” Miguel answered.

“I’m glad things worked out for you love birds,” Jessica gushed.

“The prom will be great,” Lyndsey smiled.

“Yeah, great,” Miguel frowned.

“Miguel what’s wrong?” Jessica asked.

“Kay and I have been friends forever. I can’t believe she would do this,” Miguel said, putting his arm around Lyndsey’s waist, “I think I’ll try to talk to her before prom, after things cool down.”

When Jessica got home she heard sobs coming from Kay’s room. Jessica popped her head in the door. She felt bad for Kay for some reason. “Kay, are you alright?” She asked.

“Like you care,” Kay sobbed.

“Look. What you did was wrong,” Jessica began.

“Don’t you think I know?” Kay said.

“BUT! I do care. You’re my sister and I don’t want to see you hurt,” Jessica admitted, sitting on the end of the bed.

“Thank, you know I don’t mean to be mean to you, I just love Miguel so much, but now he hates me!” Kay began to cry again.

“Kay. He doesn’t hate you. Think for a while. Which would you rather have? Miguel as a friend? Or not having him in your life at all?” Jessica explained.

Chapter 7 (Prom Night: Before the prom)

“Tonight will be the best!” Jill exclaimed.

“Yeah, but I can’t help feeling bad for Kay,” Lyndsey admitted.

“Well she was invited to come here and get ready with us,” Anna replied, “Maybe she’ll come.”

“Well let’s not worry. Let’s get ready!” Jill said, grabbing her dress and going into the washroom to change.

At Miguel’s house

“Come in,” Miguel said, after there was a knock at the door.

“Hi Miguel,” Kay said, softly.

“Hi Kay. We need to talk,” He replied, fixing his tie, while he was getting ready.

“Miguel, I’m so sorry!” Kay cried, “I know you probably hate me now!”

“I could never hate you. I don’t know why you like me, I really don’t, but we’ve been friends so long, I don’t want that to change,” He explained.

“I do love you, and I don’t think that will ever change, but Jessica said something to make me think. She asked if I’d rather have you as a friend or not have you at all,” Kay said, looking down, “And I’d rather have you as a friend. I know I’ll always love you, but I want you to be happy.”

“Thanks, Kay. I love you as a friend but I don’t feel the king of love you want,” Miguel explained, “But I want to stay friends,” He continued, then leaned over and gave Kay a tight hug.

“And you and I will be perfect friends,” Kay answered, smiling, as she turned to leave.

“Hey Kay,” Miguel stopped her, “Save a dance tonight.”

“Sure,” Kay replied, glad that Miguel forgave her, and went home to get ready.

When Kay got home the phone rang “Hello?” Kay said.

“Kay? This is Carrie. Where are you? Come get ready with us,” She replied.

“Lyndsey hates me,” Kay answered.

“No she doesn’t,” Carrie said.

“I just came from Miguel’s. Everything’s ok between us but Lyndsey will always hate me,” Kay replied, “I’d better go.”

“She doesn’t hate you. We’ll see you at the prom, ok?” Carrie asked.

“Yeah, of course,” Kay said, “Bye.”

“Bye,” Answered Carrie, “She’s not coming here, but she’ll meet us there,” Carrie explained, after hanging up.

All the girls were decked out in their dresses and had their hair, nails and makeup done. “Wait until Miguel sees you in that,” Jill said.

“Well, wait until Chris sees you!” Lyndsey replied.

“Hey look! The limo’s here!” Jill announced as she saw Chris and Fred step out of it.

“You look beautiful,” Chris said to Jill when everyone got into the limo.

“Let’s go pick up Miguel,” Lyndsey said.

“Oh yeah. He said to wait here and he’ll walk over here. Speak of the devil,” Chris said, as Miguel walked up with Reese.

“Lyndsey, you look great,” Miguel complimented her, and kissed her on the cheek.

“You look so handsome,” She replied back.

“Thanks,” Miguel said, blushing, “Tonight will be a night we’ll always remember,” as he held Lyndsey’s hand and smiled at her.

They all got in the limo and Chris turned on the radio and said, “This is our last time hanging out before we’re real graduates.”

“We’ll all stay close friends,” Carolyn said.

“We’ll always be together,” Miguel replied, looking straight into Lyndsey’s eyes.

When the limo pulled up to the school, the chauffeur opened the door for them to get out. “Here we go!” Chris announced, walking towards the door.

When all the people arrived the doors were opened and music blared from the gym. Everyone was dancing and having lots of fun. “There’s Kay,” Miguel said.

“Let’s invite her to come get her pictures with all of us,” Lyndsey suggested.

“Hi Kay,” Miguel said, turning a little red.

“Hi Miguel,” She replied, looking down.

“Um Kay? Do you wanna come with all of us to get group pictures?” Lyndsey asked.

“You mean you want me to? You don’t hate me?” Kay said.

“Of course not. I want us to be friends,” Lyndsey answered.

“Me too. I’m really sorry about everything,” Kay said, smiling.

“It’s forgotten,” Lyndsey forgave her.

Lyndsey, Miguel, Kay, Reese, Jill, Chris, Carolyn, Fred, Carrie and Anna went outside for group pictures. “I almost forgot,” Miguel said suddenly, pulling out a corsage.

“It’s beautiful,” She said, hugging him.

“So are you,” He replied, and kissed her hand.

Everyone got tons of pictures taken and the couples got them taken. Miguel and Lyndsey put their arms around each other while their picture was taken. They made goofy faces for some pictures then suddenly Miguel kissed her on the cheek when the cameraman took the picture.

Then the group got together for some goofy shots. Afterwards they all went back in the gym to dance, and all hung out and partied together. “Lyndsey I have to tell you something. Could you come with me?” Miguel asked Lyndsey.

Lyndsey smiled and nodded and took Miguel’s hand and followed him into the hall. “What did you want to tell me?” Lyndsey asked, curiously.

“Well I wanted to say I’m glad we’re together and everything turned out great and…I uh,” Miguel said.

“You?” Lyndsey replied.

“I love you,” He blurted out, “Ever since we met, I knew you were the one and I love you,” Miguel explained.

“I love you too,” Lyndsey answered and leaned in and kissed Miguel, then they walked back into the gym in time to here the principal talk.

“Now is the time to announce this year’s prom king and prom queen,” She started, “The 1999 prom king is…Miguel Lopez-Fitzgerald!”

Lyndsey hugged Miguel and kissed him and he went on stage, to get his crown. “The 1999 prom queen is,” The principal said, “Lyndsey Stark!”

“Oh my gosh!” Lyndsey exclaimed, turning red, and went on the stage.

“Thanks everyone. I couldn’t ask for a better, more beautiful queen!” Miguel made a speech.

“Um thanks! I didn’t think I’ve been here long enough to be considered for this, but I really appreciate it, and I love it here in Harmony, and I love being up here with Miguel,” Lyndsey said, “And I love you Miguel.”

They kissed and went to the middle to share the prom king and queen dance. Everyone was watching them. “You were right, this is a night we’ll remember. I love you, “Lyndsey whispered to Miguel.

“I love you too. I’m so glad you moved to Harmony,” Miguel said, smiling.

“Me too,” Lyndsey replied, as she rested her head on Miguel’s shoulder as they danced.
