Chapter 1
“Is that them?” Lyndsey asked her friend Mel as a white van drove by the radio station, where thousands of girls were anxiously awaiting O-Town.
“No, Trevor said that they were in a white van but with tinted windows,” Mel said.
“This is exciting! We actually get to know a famous person!” Exclaimed Lyndsey.
A white van drove up, into the underground parking lot and the crowd erupted. The guys emerged from the van and began waving as they walked up the path of the parking lot.
“TREV!” Mel screamed as loud as she could, from the front of the crowd. Trevor jerked his head and came running over. He lifted Mel over a barricade and hugged her, “Hey cous!” He turned and reached over and lifted Lyndsey over the barricade.
“Hey Lyndsey!” He smiled, “I haven’t seen you in a couple of months. How are you?”
“I’m great. How are you?” She answered.
“The best I’ve ever been,” He replied. Trevor scurried off with the girls as the other guys followed. Inside the radio station Trevor introduced the band to Lyndsey and Mel.
“It’s great that you’re home,” Mel said, “All of our family is really close so me and Trevor have always been tight,” Mel explained to everyone.
“And since Lyndsey has been Mel’s best friend for 10 years, and she is over all the time, she’s a good friend of mine,” Trevor told the band.
“Are you coming in for the interview?” Ashley asked them.
“We’d like to,” Grinned Lyndsey, eyeing Jacob.
“Then follow us,” Erik replied, smiling. They all entered a room and were introduced to the radio DJ.
“Ten seconds until air,” He counted down, “This is DJ Slim and we’re here with Dan, Jacob, Ashley, Erik and Trevor of O-Town.”
“Hi.”
“Hello.” Each guy said his greeting. At the commercial break Dan and Jacob came over and sat with the girls and started to play with Koush balls.
“I had these when I was a kid,” Dan said, throwing it at Jacob, and Jacob whipped it at Dan’s butt and they headed back to their seats.
Lyndsey picked up one of the Koush balls and slipped it into her pocket. She thought she was dreaming and needed proof she was alive and that this was happening.
“So, are you guys available for the ladies out there?” DJ Slim asked.
“You bet,” Dan said.
“Yes,” The others said.
“The ladies are happy. Well that’s it. Thanks to O-Town for coming in today,” The DJ went on. Dan walked over to Mel and Lyndsey.
“You guys are all single?” Asked Lyndsey.
“Actually we have to say that. Ashley is on a break with his girlfriend. I had a girlfriend but we’ve decided it’s best to just be good friends,” Dan explained, “And Jacob…”He continued, “Nevermind.”
“Ooh, Jacob has a girlfriend,” Mel teased.
“Really? Who?” Jacob asked walking up.
“Thania,” Teased Erik.
“We’re just friends,” Jacob answered.
“Right,” Trevor laughed.
“Don’t you think I’d tell you if I liked her?” Asked Jacob.
“You two flirt,” Ashley said, “You’ll end up together.” Lyndsey turned a flustered colour.
“Are you alright?” Asked Dan.
“Yeah,” She smiled as Jacob gave her a long, thoughtful look. Lyndsey saw him glaring at her, “So, uh,” She said.
“Autographs!” Exclaimed Mel, “Nobody believes that Trev is my cous.”
They each got the guys autographs. “You sure you’re alright?” Dan asked Lyndsey.
“Yup. I’m just in shock,” She grinned, “You guys are amazingly talented and so nice and down to Earth. I’m in shock.”
“Thank you, cous. Yeah you can be my cous too,” Joked Trevor.
1 month later
“We get to open for Boys II Men tonight,” Erik said.
“Wow,” Lyndsey said, “Don’t worry, you guys will have your own tour with sell out shows, in no time,” She informed them. She had started opening up and began to relax around them, soonafter she met them.
“I can’t wait,” Jacob said, “I’ve wanted to do this since I was five.”
“You’re doing it,” Mel said.
“And doing it well,” Smiled Lyndsey.
“Do you want to come to the show tonight?” Erik asked.
“Sure,” They replied.
Ashley called one of their managers, Jay, to hook them up with tickets, “Got em,” He said when he hung up the phone.
“Aren’t you guys supposed to be filming…” Began Mel.
“Making The Band was suppose to start taping yesterday, but the crew never showed up. They’re definitely coming tonight,” Explained Erik.
“That’s so cool,” Lyndsey said.
“Of course it is, especially since you and Mel will be on T.V,” Dan said.
“Us?” Lyndsey panicked.
“Yeah, we hope you will keep hanging out with us. It’s nice to have company and to be with friends while we’re on the road,” Jacob said.
“Unless you guys can’t take time off work,” Ashley said.
“I’m currently unemployed,” Frowned Mel, “Oh well.”
“I work mornings, but if anything comes up, I can book it off. I’m a higher power at work, sorta,” She laughed.
“Great,” Trevor said, putting his arms over their shoulders, “My two best gals.”
“Maybe I can get Shelli to come out this week during promo stuff?” Ashley suggested.
“We’d love to meet her,” Mel replied.
“Ooh, Jacob,” Ashley nudged him, “What about Thania? Bring your girlfriend out.”
“She’s not my girlfriend,” He said.
“Come on,” Teased Erik.
“She’s NOT,” He insisted.
“Give it up…you too like each other,” Trevor said. Lyndsey wanted to leave the room.
“As a friend. F-R-I-E-N-D, nothing more,” He answered.
“Whatever, we think you two would look cute,” Ashley said.
Lyndsey couldn’t take it anymore. She ran out of the room. Jacob looked at the door that was about to close.
“What was that about?” Trevor asked.
“Who knows?” She’s been going through a lot lately,” Mel answered.
The guys were packing their stuff up when Jacob was glaring at the door, “I’ll be right back,” He said. Jacob wandered down the halls and bumped into Lyndsey by the washrooms.
“What’s wrong?” He asked,
“Nothing, I, uh, had to use the washroom,” She lied.
“Oh, ok, I thought,” Jacob began.
“The Thania thing? I believe you. The reason I left...oh gosh,” She began.
“If you don’t want to,” He started.
“No, it’s ok. The reason is because, the last time I was dating someone I got really hurt. I know it sounds stupid, but I can’t take hearing about relationships right now,” She explained.
“I’m sorry,” Jacob said, as they walked for 20 minutes talking.
“Sounds like a creep to me,” Jacob stated, “You deserve better.”
“He was and thanks,” Grinned Lyndsey, “Yeah I just can’t take relationship stuff right now, well at least until I get with the right person.” They went back into the room with the others.
“You left your cell here. Careful next time. Thania might call,” Erik teased.
“Quit it,” Jacob told them with a stern look.
“Rowwwwww,” Ashley jokingly hissed. They all gather their things and headed to their van.
“I’ll call you later to tell you what we’re up to tomorrow. You guys can hang out with us all day,” Trevor said as he hugged them and the group said goodbye.
“Wow, they were so funny and nice,” Lyndsey said, “I Guess part of that is because we know Trevor.”
“Maybe,” Mel replied.
Chapter 2
Later that night, back at their apartment Trevor called.
“He said to be outside tomorrow at 9am and the van will pick us up,” Mel informed Lyndsey after hanging up the phone.
“I can’t wait,” Lyndsey grinned.
Lyndsey tossed and turned all night. At 5am she sat straight up in her bed and exclaimed, “JACOB!” She then shook her head and had a puzzled look on her face. “It can’t be,” She said, “No, it couldn’t.” She went back to sleep with half a grin on her face.
Lyndsey woke again at 8am and began to get ready. She tried to dress as best as she could but staying with the casual look.
“Whoa!” Mel laughed as she entered Lyndsey’s room to see clothes everywhere, “You only have an hour you know?”
“ I can’t find anything to wear,” Sighed Lyndsey.
“Wear what you normally wear,” Mel said.
“I can’t,” Replied Lyndsey, picking up her baby blue angel t-shirt and her flared blue jeans and frowned.
“That’s a good choice,” Mel told her.
“I guess it had better be. I only have an hour for my makeup and hair,” She frowned, racing into the washroom.
Mel’s eyebrows raised, “Ohh, I get it,” She began to giggle.
“What?” Asked Lyndsey.
“Nothing,” Laughed Mel.
“Stop laughing at me,” Lyndsey herself began laughing.
“I’m not,” Laughed Mel, “You don’t remember last night do you?”
“Huh?” Lyndsey replied.
“You screamed out Jacob’s name,” She replied.
“You heard me?” She asked, “I don’t know why I did, I, forget it.”
“Yeah, you like him,” Teased Mel, “You’re ready for another man.
“A taken man,” She sighed, “Thania.”
“He said he’s not,” Jill responded. <> “Two words, cover up,” She frowned again.
“Awe, poor Lyndsey,” Mel sympathized, “But you two had a talk didn’t you?”
“Yeah,” She smiled, “Maybe he doesn’t like Thania,” Her smile grew bigger.
At 9am sharp a limo arrived in their driveway. “Nice wheels,” Mel told Trevor.
“Yeah, we’re classy,” Joked Trevor.
They hopped into the limo. Lyndsey got stuck next to Ashley, which was right in front of Jacob. She was quiet and looked out the window and every few minutes she would look over at Jacob. The third time, Jacob caught her. She looked down at her feet and after a couple of minutes she looked up and she and Jacob glanced at each other.
“What’s wrong?” Ashley nudged her.
“Oh, nothing. I didn’t get much sleep last night,” Answered Lyndsey.
“Why not?” Dan asked.
She shrugged her shoulders. Mel was looking at Lyndsey with a silly grin on her face. Lyndsey glared at her with wide eyes. They stopped at the mall.
“Shop, shop, shop til’ I drop, drop, drop,” Sang Trevor.
“I’m going to the music store,” Lyndsey said.
“I’ll come with you,” Jacob replied. They both headed off.
“So,” Lyndsey said, nervously.
“So,” Jacob repeated.
“I bet I’ll waist all my money here,” Lyndsey stated.
“Really?” Asked Jacob.
Lyndsey headed to the rock section as Jacob went to the rap section. Half an hour later they walked to the counter with their CDs.
“I have Limp, Creed, Crazytown and 2gether,” Lyndsey said.
“I have a best of Michael Jackson, Creed, Korn, Mya, Nelly, Sisqo, Destiny’s Child, Crazytown and the new Boys II Men,” Jacob announced.
“Wow, that’s a lot,” Lyndsey said, surprised. Lyndsey paid and all she had left was 20 cents.
“I’m broke,” She replied.
They left the store and met up with the others for lunch. “Lyndsey, you can have some of my fries,” Mel offered.
“Thanks,” She replied.
“Hey, why don’t we go to the movies,” Erik suggested.
“That sounds good,” Trevor replied and the others agreed, and began getting up.
“You guys have fun, I’ll see you later,” Lyndsey told Mel.
“Why aren’t you coming?” She answered.
“ I have no money,” She answered. Jacob took Lyndsey’s arm and pulled her over, “It’s ok, I’ll pay for you.”
“Are you sure?” She asked.
“Of course, come on,” He said, as they went to pay. They all decided on ‘Dude! Where’s My Car?’
“Dude!” Mel laughed.
“Sweet!” Giggled Lyndsey.
The seven of them sat in the back row. “The back row is the best,” Ashley stated. Trevor nudged him and the two of them started laughing.
“Oh God!” Mel sighed, “Men!”
The lights dimmed and the credits started. Lyndsey glanced two seats over at Jacob. She looked down and smiled.
“I can’t see, Lynds, trade spots with me,” Mel got up and shoved Lyndsey into her former seat, right next to Jacob. Mel had a smug look on her face and Lyndsey had half a grin on hers.
Halfway through the movie Jacob got up to use the washroom. After 15 minutes Dan said, “He must have bumped into some girl. I’ll be back,” Dan left and 5 minutes later returned laughing.
“What’s her name?” Ashley asked. Dan glanced up, “Thania.”
“Ooh,” Trevor laughed. The four guys got up and Jill and Lyndsey followed. They saw Jacob standing there, in full conversation, with Thania.
“I knew they liked each other,” Trevor said. Mel looked at Lyndsey who looked like she would cry.
“Come on,” Dan said, after looking towards Lyndsey, “He said he’s not. Let’s go back in.”
“We’ve got a movie right here,” Trevor said.
“PG 13, for now,” Laughed Erik.
Lyndsey couldn’t take it anymore. She raced back into the theatre. Dan followed. “Are you ok?” He asked.
“Why wouldn’t I be?” She faked a smile.
“You like Jacob,” He replied and Lyndsey did not speak, “It’s ok, I won’t tell.”
“What’s to tell? I like Jacob. Jacob doesn’t like me. Jacob likes Thania. Thania likes Jacob,” She began to get upset and stood up. Dan stopped her from leaving. He gave her a big hug, “I don’t think he likes her that way.”
“Yeah right,” Answered Lyndsey.
“He’d talk about her constantly if he did,” Dan informed her.
“Ok, best case scenario? He doesn’t like Thania, “He STILL doesn’t like me.” She ran out of the theatre, past the others, past Jacob and out the doors.
Chapter 3
Least expecting it, the first person to immediately emerge from the doors was Jacob. He sat on the steps, next to her.
“What’s wrong?” No answer.
“Come and watch the ending of the movie.” No answer.
“We want you to.” No answer. She kept looking down.
“Please tell me what’s wrong.” “Ok,” She began.
He smiled, “That’s a start.”
“I’ll tell you,” Lyndsey spoke and stood up, “I like you. A lot. More than anyone in the entire world. You have the hots for Thania. As usual, my heart gets broken because of a guy. I can’t stand feeling like this anymore. It hurts too much. I’m going to go home where I won’t see you again and you can be with the girl you want,” Lyndsey raced away as fast as she could, as Jacob called out her name.
Jacob went inside to where the others were exiting the theatre. “Thanks a lot,” Jacob said.
What?” Trevor asked.
“For feeding the idea into Lyndsey’s head that I like Thania. We are friends. Nothing more but you can’t just take my word for it. Today we were talking. That’s it. I do not like Thania, and you know what? She stopped me to tell me about her new boyfriends and how happy she is. So thanks,” Jacob began to walk away.
“Where are you going?” Erik asked, as guilty as the others.
“Not to Thania,” He kept walking.
“Man, I’m a dumbass,” Ashley began.
“No, I’m like the king dumbass,” Trevor replied.
“What did Lyndsey have to do with this?” Asked Erik.
“She likes Jacob. Like isn’t even the word,” Mel began.
“Tell me about it,” Dan replied.
“You knew?” Asked Ashley.
“Yeah, that’s why I tried to get you guys to drop it after I found out,” He explained. Back at Lyndsey’s apartment Lyndsey answered the door to find Jacob.
“Jacob?” She gasped.
“We need to talk,” He began.
“I think we did before,” She started.
“I know you got hurt by your last boyfriend but you won’t be this time,” He answered.
“What?” Asked Lyndsey.
“You told me I’d go to the girl I want and I have. I’ve come to you. I like you too,” He smiled and took her hand, “I want to be with you.”
Lyndsey was turned and she didn’t turn around. “This isn’t funny,” She said, ‘I know you would never be interested in someone like me.” She now turned around and Jacob was right behind her to immediately press his lips to hers. After a long embrace they put their foreheads together.
“I don’t want to get hurt,” She whispered.
“I won’t let you,” He whispered back.
She pulled away and backed up, “I go from being hurt so bad to loving someone I’ve only known for a month,” She began, “I don’t know what to think. I don’t know what to do.”
He moved towards her, “Do what your heart tells you.” She looked down and back up into his baby blue eyes. She then forcefully threw her body at him and began kissing him and he started kissing her back. She pulled away again.
“You don’t?” He began.
“No, I do, it’s just, things are moving fast,” She told him, “I do like you.”
“I really like you too,” He hugged her.
‘We need to go somewhere before things get weird,’ She thought.
They headed over to Ashley’s house. “Hey guys,” Dan opened the door, “We’re in the living room.”
“K,” Said Jacob.
“You ok?” Dan whispered to Lyndsey.
She answered, “I hope so. I will be in a minute.” She went and found Jacob.
“I just need you to tell me,” She began.
“My feelings for you are true. They’re 100% real, don’t ever doubt that,” He assured her.
She smiled and they went into the room with the others. Jacob sprawled himself on his back on the floor, “I’m tired,” He said and sat up, leaning against the couch.
“Me too,” Replied Lyndsey.
Jacob reached for her hand and pulled her onto his lap and wrapped his arms around her.
“Are you?” Mel began.
“This is awesome!” Erik commented.
Jacob nodded, “It is awesome,” He kissed her cheek.
“PSYCHO!” Ashley hissed in a scary voice.
Dan turned off the lights and sat down on the floor. Lyndsey rested her head against Jacob’s chest.
“What’s wrong?” He whispered.
“Nothing. I’ve never been happier,” She answered him.
“Good,” He grinned, “I want you to be happy.”
“Here comes the scary part,” Trevor said. Mel screamed and put her face in Dan’s shoulder, “I hate blood,” She mumbled.
Dan put one arm around Mel, “You don’t want to watch the rest then,” He laughed.
Mel was gleaming. Lyndsey tried to get her attention by coughing but she was paying attention to Dan’s arm.
“Are you ok? Want me to get you some water?” Jacob offered.
“No, I’m fine,” She motioned her head towards Mel and Dan and Jacob raised his eyebrows.
After the movie Jacob drove Lyndsey home. “You think Mel and Dan?” Lyndsey started to say.
“I don’t know, they could,” Jacob replied.
“What about Cindy?” She asked.
“They broke up,” Jacob began.
“So, he could have feelings for her?” She replied.
“I don’t think so,” Jacob said.
“It would be nice if they could go out. Mel’s never mentioned if she’s liked him but she’s my best friend and I think she does. I hope she can have him,” Lyndsey explained.
“Maybe,” Jacob replied.
There was a moment of complete silence before Lyndsey spoke, “Do you want her to be with him?”
They pulled into Lyndsey’s driveway and got out, “Of course,” He answered, “Look it’s our first night together, let’s enjoy it. Let fate take it’s course.” She hugged him, “It’s already started too,” She whispered in his ear, “I feel like this is all a dream and I’m going to wake up and feel alone again.”
“You won’t,” He gave her a soft kiss goodnight.
Chapter 4
The next morning Lyndsey awoke with a beam of sun in her face. She lifted her head off the soft pillow and sat up smiling. She started at the picture of Jacob by her bed on her nightstand. There was a knock on her bedroom door and assuming it was Mel she said, Come in.” Jacob entered with a beautiful blue, fake, acrylic rose.
“Morning,” He smiled, “It’s one of those roses you can keep forever, and it’s your favourite colour.”
“Thanks,” She replied and kissed his cheek. He sat on the side of her bed and started to laugh, "You found my picture in a magazine.”
“So?” She herself giggled.
“You put it in their last night?” He was still laughing.
“I put it in there a month ago,” She replied, honestly. Jacob confessed, “Four weeks ago,” He took out his wallet and showed Lyndsey a picture of herself.
“Gosh, where’d you get that?” She asked. He told her, “Trevor. He had pictures from last summer I stole one.”
They laughed a bit and then the room went silent. “Jacob, I love you,” She suddenly told him.
“I love you too,” He grinned, “I’ll let you get dressed.”
Jacob waited in the living room. A sleepy Mel stumbled out of her room, “Ah daylight, evil,” She mumbled.
“Hi Mel,” He said.
“It’s 11am, Lyndsey won’t be up,” Mel began, “No wait, I won’t be, No wait, huh?”
“You must have been up late?” Jacob half asked.
“I was on the phone with Dan,” Mel told him.
“Wouldn’t you two be so cute,” Lyndsey replied, coming from her room into Jacob’s arms.
“Not as cute as you two,” Gushed Mel.
“Ask Dan on a date,” Jacob said, “I’m sure he’ll say yes.”
“Really?” Mel exclaimed.
Lyndsey smiled as Mel went to use the phone in her room. “ I don’t want her to get hurt,’ Lyndsey explained, “If he thinks it’s a “friends” date, she’ll be crushed.”
“No, he told me last night that he thinks she’s cute,” Admitted Jacob.
“Really?” Asked Lyndsey.
“Really,” Responded Jacob, “He won’t hurt her.”
“Probably not but I know how it feels,” She sighed.
“I know you do. That guy was a creep. Dan’s not like that,” Jacob said.
“I know Dan’s not, but what if she starts to really like him and he treats her bad? What if he trash talks her to people? What if he dumps her in an awful way? What if he cheats on her? What if he harasses her?” She freaked.
Mel emerged from her room, “He said yes! We’re going for lunch. See ya,” She grabbed her bag and raced out the door.
Lyndsey looked at the floor and Jacob looked at her. “I’m sorry,” She sighed and a tear rolled down her cheek.
“Hey,” He whispered as he put his arms around her, “Don’t cry.”
She buried her head into his shoulders.
“I won’t hurt you like he did,” He promised, referring to her ex-boyfriend.
She pulled away, “I know. I’m sorry. I’ve never told anyone as much as you know.”
“I didn’t know he did all that,” He looked in her eyes, “I love you. Ok? I love you.”
She kissed him, “I love you.”
“Let’s go for lunch,” He suggested.
“I’d like that,” She said, quietly. He opened the door and led her to his car.
“Guess what?” He announced, “We get to stay home for 1 more week, instead of 2 days.”
“Great. What happens when you leave?” She asked.
“We need to talk about that I suppose,” He said,
“Because I love you and I’ll be calling everyday. Twice, no, three times a day,” He laughed.
“Save your airtime,” She told him, “I’m going with you.”
“WHAT!?”
“I’m going with you.”
“Huh?” He asked.
“I’ve been thinking about it for a while. I dreamt about it before we got together. I didn’t want to be without you,” She admitted.
“You’d do this, for me?” He was surprised.
“Yes, of course,” She said, “I’m finished school and I have a little money saved.
“You won’t need it. When our next CD comes out we’ll all be getting money. I can support both of us,” He said.
“Ha ha,” She laughed, “We sound like a married couple.”
“Is that a bad thing?” He asked. She didn’t answer but she did smile, “Someday,” She finally spoke.
He took her hand after they pulled into the restaurant. They went towards the door as Mel came running out. Dan followed, calling her name.
“What’s going on?” Lyndsey exclaimed.
“I like her but I don’t know if I’m ready,” He began,
“I do want to go out with her but I need some time. I have to think.”
Lyndsey answered, “I know,” and ran off after Mel.
“Am I a jerk?” Dan asked.
“No,” Jacob replied, “Lyndsey understands completely. She just doesn’t want Mel to get hurt.”
Lyndsey came back 5 minutes later. “Sorry Dan, she said she needed to be alone.”
“I understand,” He said.
“You did the right thing,” Lyndsey told him.
“Really?” He asked.
“Yeah,” She said as Jacob’s arm went around in front of her shoulders, “Take your time. Mel will be ok no matter what.”
“ I will, thanks,” Dan left.
Jacob kissed her forehead, “That’s part of the reason why I love you so much.”
She passionately kissed him. “The past is in the past and the future is for us.” When Lyndsey went home that night she lay on her bed holding the blue rose. She looked more carefully and on the stem it read ‘Listen to your heart.’ She grinned and closed her eyes and pictured Jacob until she fell fast asleep.
Chapter 5
The next morning Lyndsey drove over to Jacob’s house. “Hi,” He said, “Um, you can come in. Dan’s here,” Jacob had a weird look on his face.
“Hi Dan,” Lyndsey greeted him with a hug.
“Hey,” He muttered.
“What’s wrong?” She asked.
“I was talking to Cindy last night,” He replied,
“She’s just started to date somebody. I know we’re not together but it still feels weird.”
“Awe, are you okay?” She asked, sympathetically.
“Yeah, I’ll be fine,” He smiled, “I have great friends. So…does Mel hate me?”
“Actually, I haven’t seen her today,” She answered.
“That’s weird,” Dan said.
The phone rang while Jacob was in the kitchen. “Hi Mel. You wanna talk to Dan? Oh, Lyndsey? Yeah, she’s here. Hold on,” Jacob stuck his head out of the kitchen and whispered, “It’s Mel, she sounds upset.” Jacob handed the phone to Lyndsey, “Hey Mel. Where are you? Are you ok? What?” There was silence. Lyndsey dropped the phone and it smashed down on the floor making a loud sound. Dan got on the phone after Lyndsey began to cry. Jacob rushed to her as she sobbed I his arms on the floor.
Dan stayed for a minute and then said, “I’m going to the hospital,” He kissed Lyndsey’s cheek, “I’m sorry,” He said to her and then left.
Jacob held her for a while until Lyndsey said, “No..” He stroked her hair, “What happened?”
“Nicole…my friend…No…” She was upset. Jacob hugged her tighter.
“She died,” Lyndsey choked.
“I’m so sorry,” Jacob repeated over and over.
After half an hour Jacob got Lyndsey’s jacket and drove her down to the hospital. They found Mel in Dan’s arms.
Jacob held onto Lyndsey, and he thought she was going to faint. “How?” Dan finally asked.
“She was walking home,” Mel said slowly, “And got hit by a drunk driver. They got away.”
Lyndsey pushed her face into Jacob’s chest and clutched onto him as tight as she could. Jill was quiet as she talked to Dan, but Lyndsey still couldn’t calm down, since she was close to Nicole. Jacob whispered, “It’ll be alright. I’m here. I think you need to be looked at.”
She shook her head but Jacob decided to take her home. Mel and Dan came too.
“The funeral is on Tuesday,” Mel said softly.
“This is terrible. I’m here for you,” Dan held her hand.
Jacob went to check on Lyndsey. She was asleep in his bed, tossing and turning. She awoke, “Why did this have to happen?” She mumbled.
He stroked her face, “I wish I could take the pain away. You need to keep your strength.”
“I can’t cry. I have to be strong,” She said.
“It’s ok to cry. You can’t keep your feelings in. I’m here for you,” He smiled and kissed her lips. He wiped a tear from her eye as she closed them and fell asleep again. This time she was still and Jacob wished he could do something but he couldn’t. All he could do was love her.
Chapter 6
A week later Jacob and Lyndsey packed and that night they were on their way to the airport. “Mel? What are you doing here with luggage?” Asked Lyndsey.
“Dan asked me to come. We’re going out as of tonight,” She blushed.
“That’s great,” Said Lyndsey.
Jacob came running up, “Guess what?! I’m going home!” He exclaimed, picking Lyndsey up and swinging her around, “We’re touring home first.” He was happier than ever.
“San Diego,” Smiled Lyndsey, “Do I get to meet your family?”
“Of course,” Jacob kissed her, and gave Dan a look. Dan had a grin on his face, as they boarded their plane for their 3 hour flight to San Diego.
“Jacob, you’re like a little kid on Christmas,” Joked Lyndsey, “You love home, don’t you?”
“I love bringing you home,” He clutched her hand, “We get to spend our two month anniversary there.”
“Wow, two months,” She gushed, “I love you.”
“I love you too,” He kissed her cheek.
The next morning Jacob was up early. He shared a hotel room with Lyndsey, since they arrived too late for Jacob to go home.
“Wake up,” He nudged her as she rolled over in her own bed, “Wanna come home with me?”
“Sure,” She whispered.
Half an hour later Lyndsey was ready to go, and Jacob was in the car. “I’m a mess,” She said, “Your family won’t wanna see me,” She started to put on makeup.
“They’ll love you. I do,” He grinned
“You’re so good to me. I feel unworthy,” Lyndsey began.
“Don’t,” Jacob put a finger to her lips, “You’ve gone through so much. Let’s only think about the future.”
“You’re itching to get home. I can tell,” She said, finishing her makeup.
“I’m finally going to be home,” He grinned.
“I hope your family likes me,” Lyndsey said, nervously.
“Of course they will,” Insisted Jacob.
Everyone went together, across town to Jacob’s house. “Born free!” Ashley teased Jacob.
“I’m home,” Jacob smelled the air, “How good is this?!” He picked Lyndsey up and spun her around.
“We’re gonna have a huge dinner, with all of us and all my relatives,” Jacob told them.
“I could eat everything there,” Laughed Erik.
“This is cool,” Trevor said.
“Let’s go in,” Dan replied, “I’m starved.” His mom answered the door, “Jacob!” She greeted him, “35 of your relatives are coming tonight.”
“Great,” He grinned, “Mom, I’d like you to meet the most special person in my life. This is Lyndsey.” She stepped forward and hugged Jacob’s mom, “It’s nice to finally meet you,” Lyndsey said.
“We’ve heard about you. You’re the girl that stole my son’s heart,” She said.
“She can keep it,” Laughed Jacob.
They all went inside and sat down to meet each other. Jacob grabbed a beer from the fridge, “I know I don’t usually drink but this is a special occasion.” He sat on the couch next to Lyndsey. He pulled her in close, with his arm around her, “Want some?” He asked.
“No, it’s your day, you can drink,” She said, softly.
“If it bothers you,” He began to say.
“No, I’m just, a little, um, uncomfortable,” She admitted.
He put the beer down and took her hand and led her to his room, “What’s wrong?” He asked.
“Nothing,” She said.
“But you’re feeling uncomfortable,” He said.
“I’m in a new place, away from home,” She said.
“That’s not it. I can tell,” He moved closer and held her.
She looked at him, “I’m nervous to meet your family because they won’t like me. I just lost my friend and I feel like I shouldn’t be having so much fun, and it’s all getting to me.”
He held her against him, “I understand. My family will love you no matter what.”
They sat on his bed and started kissing until Jacob said, “It’s ok to have fun. You’re trying to forget the pain, not your friend.” He kissed her forehead.
“Yeah,” She half-smiled, “I guess.”
They linked arms and went back into the living room and waited for the guests to arrive.
Chapter 7
“I think that everybody’s here,” Jacob told Ashley,
“I’m glad you guys came.”
“We’re glad too. Your home is cool,” Ashley replied.
“Hey, where’s Lyndsey?” Dan asked, as he walked up.
“I think she’s in the kitchen,” Jacob spoke over the loud music playing.
Dan wandered off into an empty kitchen and out to the stairs. He slowly climbed the stairs. Lyndsey was standing up there, all alone.
“Hey, what are you doing up here?” Dan asked.
“Just thinking,” She said.
“Bout’ what?” He asked.
“Stuff,” She said softly, “This is so new for me. I just…”
“Can’t handle it?” He finished.
“Yeah,” She sighed, “It’s like this is all too good to be true. I’m finally in love with an amazing guy. I get to meet his nice family and it’s so different…I’m just waiting for something bad to happen, it always does when I’m in a relationship.”
“I understand,” Dan said sympathetically, “But you two are so in love that nothing could break you up,” He told her and gave her a big hug.
He put his arm out, “Come back down,” He said. They went downstairs and Dan said, “My goal is to keep you smiling all night. Let’s dance.”
They danced to a fast song until a slow song came on and Jacob walked up. “Keep that smile on her face,” Dan told him, as Jacob cut in to dance.
“What was that about?” He asked, anxiously .
“It doesn’t matter,” She smiled and held him close.
“Are you still upset?” He asked, concerned, looking down at her.
“Yeah, but you make it all better,” She kissed him and rested her head against his shoulders, “I love being here in your home. I can’t wait to come back next time.”
“If there is a next time,” Jacob said.
Lyndsey pushed away, “What?”
“No, no,” He laughed, “I meant we might not get a chance to come back from touring for a long time.” Lyndsey looked blankly at him and he pulled her in close, “You know we’ll be together forever.” She smiled and looked down. He lifted her chin and kissed her lips, and they continued dancing.
“May I cut in,” Some girl said to Lyndsey.
“Amanda, how are you?” Jacob asked, “Amanda this is my girlfriend Lyndsey. Lyndsey this is my cousin’s daughter Amanda.”
“Hi,” Amanda said.
“Hi, nice to meet you,” Lyndsey replied.
“May I?” Amanda asked.
“Sure,” Lyndsey said, smiling and walking off. She went through the big house, through crowds of relatives and sat down on the couch. A man walked over and sat down.
“Hi, I’m Larry, Jacob’s uncle. Who are you?” He said, extending his hand.
“Hi, I’m Jacob’s girlfriend-,” She got cut off.
“Ohh, Thania, we finally meet,” He said, “How long have you two been together now? It’s been a while hasn’t it?”
“Yeah,” She faked a smile, “Excuse me,” She said politely, and walked away.
“What’s wrong?” Ashley greeted her, after emerging from the basement.
“Nothing,” She mumbled.
“Hey! I saw you with Jacob earlier,” A woman said, walking up to them.
“Yeah,” Lyndsey smiled.
“It’s nice to finally meet you. We’ve heard all about you from Mrs. Underwood,” The woman said, “I’m Jacob’s great Aunt.”
“You’ve heard about me?” She asked.
“Of course,” She answered, “You know? Some day you two will get married. I can just picture it. Jacob and Thania Underwood.”
Lyndsey’s heart stopped. Ashley put his hand on her shoulder, but she moved away and ran up the stairs.
“Lyndsey, wait!” He yelled.
“Lyndsey?” The woman said, with a guilty look on her face, as she sipped her wine and walked away.
Chapter 8
“What are you doing?” Ashley asked, entering the guest room.
“Packing,” She said.
He walked up and gave her a hug to console her, “Don’t cry,” He whispered.
“That’s all I do lately,” She said, calming down, “No more. I’m going home.”
Ashley took the suitcase from her hand, “Do you love him?”
She sat on the bed, “Yes,” She answered.
“Then stay. If you leave, he’ll be devastated.” In frustration, she flung the suitcase across the room against the wall and her things went everywhere.
“Everyone wants him with Thania,” She sighed softly.
“No, that guys want you with Jacob. So do his family,” Ashley said.
“Ashley, that’s twice now…” She began.
“Twice?” He asked.
“Yeah. His uncle called me Thania and that was bad but when that lady can picture Thania and Jacob getting married,” She said, “It hurts Ashley, it really hurts and it scares me. I don’t want to lose him.”
He hugged her again, “You won’t lose him,” He turned and said, “Do you want to come back down?”
“No thanks. I need to be alone,” She said.
Ashley smiled his gorgeous smile, “You’re an amazing person. Jacob knows that. We all love you to pieces,” He left.
She was still upset as she lay on the bed and curled up on top of the covers.
Downstairs everyone was celebrating. “Wine for you,” Jacob was handing everyone wine,
“Where’s Lyndsey?” He asked as everyone was gathering in the dining room.
“She’s somewhere. Go ahead,” Ashley smiled.
Jacob was confused but he began talking, “I’m glad you’re all here tonight. This has been so much fun. As you know I’m not home very often because I’m in a band. I couldn’t have asked for a better life. I have a successful career, which I share with four awesome guys, a loving family and a woman that I care for with all my heart. It’s good to be home.” He raised his glass and everyone clapped and sipped their wine.
“So, where is Lyndsey?” Jacob asked Ashley.
“Uh, I think you should hear it from me, to save Lyndsey from re-living it to you,” He began.
“What’s happened?” Jacob asked, concerned.
“Your uncle and your great Aunt mistook Lyndsey for someone else,” He said.
“Who?”
“Thania.”
“Oh God,” Jacob explained, “What else?” He asked expecting more.
“Your great Aunt’s exact words were ‘I can just picture it. Thania and Jacob Underwood.”
“Oh my God,” Jacob said, angry, “Not this, not now. Why?”
“I don’t know, she said she heard about Thania from your mom,” Ashley said.
“My mom met Thania once…oh I see, she thought…what the?” He exclaimed.
“Lyndsey was going to go home but I stopped her,” Ashley said.
“Thanks man,” Jacob replied, walking upstairs.
Jacob entered the dark guest room to find Lyndsey asleep, curled up on her side with a picture of Jacob beside her. He sat on the edge of the bed, and stroked her hair, “I love you,” He whispered in her ear.
He looked down at her, ‘Why do these bad things keep happening to her?’ He thought, as he untucked his shirt and closed the bedroom door.
“J!” Erik called, with Trevor behind him, “You gotta cut the cake.”
“K,” He said.
“What’s wrong?” Erik asked.
“Lyndsey,” He said with a stern look, “I’ll tell you later.”
“Is she ok?” Trevor asked.
“She will be from now on,” Jacob answered as he went into the kitchen to cut the cake.
“Yummm,” Ashley said.
“Welcome home Jacob. Original and nice,” Jacob said.
“Good cake,” Dan said to Jacob’s mom.
“My son is a chocoholic. It should be good,” She laughed.
Jacob and Erik and Trevor passed through the crowd of people and Jacob explained what happened.
“Poor Lyndsey,” Erik frowned.
“She’s strong. She’ll get through this,” Trevor said.
“With me,” Jacob followed Trevor’s sentence.
Chapter 9
The Next Morning
A bright ray of sun was hitting Lyndsey’s face. She climbed out of bed, wearing the same clothes as the night before. She walked into Jacob’s room, which was beside her room. She sat on the bed and kissed his cheek to wake him up. “Hi,” He smiled, “How are you doing?”
“Great. Why would I be any less?” She smiled. She was trying to forget what happened. He sat up and she put her arms around him and they cuddled for a bit.
“So, you’re ok?” He asked.
“Why wouldn’t I be?” She asked.
“Ashley told me,” Jacob confessed.
She got up, “So,” She went back to her room, and began to pick up her things she had thrown across the room the night before.
He followed, “Need help picking up your luggage?”
“That’s ok,” She said.
“You don’t have to pretend,” Jacob said, standing there with only pajama pants on.
“Yes I do. It’s the only way to forget,” She exclaimed.
“I’m sorry,” He said.
“No, I am. I’m being stupid,” She looked down.
“No you’re not. I can see why you’re hurt,” He took her in his arms, “You don’t have anything to worry about.”
“Did you ever like her?” Lyndsey asked, after a few minutes of silence.
“As a friend only. Nothing more. I promise,” He gave her a kiss and they started kissing.
An hour later they went downstairs for breakfast. They sat holding hands. “I know it’s not the most perfect moment, but I want you to know how much I love you,” He said.
“When you whispered it last night it was perfect,” She grinned, “I love you.”
After a huge brunch the phone rang. “It’s someone named Jay,” Jacob’s dad said, handing the phone to him.
“Hi Jay, yeah…yeah…thanks. It’s so much fun being home…yeah…what?!” Jacob exclaimed, “It’s okay…sure…an hour…yeah…see ya.”
“What did Jay want?” Dan asked.
“We have to leave. They’re coming in an hour. We’re scheduled to play in LA tonight. They double booked us and had to move one show to tonight,” He explained. They all packed their things. The four guys said goodbye and thank you and packed up the van. Jacob and Lyndsey said their goodbyes together.
“Thank you for everything Mr. and Mrs. Underwood,” Lyndsey hugged them.
“We were delighted to meet you,” His mom said, “I am sure we’ll be seeing a lot more of you in the future.”
“Definitely,” Jacob said and hugged his parents goodbye.
Jacob and Lyndsey joined the others in the van. Lyndsey rubbed Jacob’s shoulders. “Heaven,” He mumbled.
“I know you must feel sad that you have to leave home again. We’ll be back,” She said.
“I know, I just wish you could have had a good time,” He said.
“I had a great time,” Lyndsey lied.
“No, you didn’t,” He said.
“Ok, not great but it was fun meeting your family,” She said, truthfully.
He put his arm around her, “You’re the best.” After a few hours they arrived at the venue in LA.
“Hi guys, you’re in for a surprise,” Jay greeted them,
“First, the concert is sold out. Second, there are a couple of record executives coming tonight from BMG who want to put together a pay-per-view concert, and they may choose you.”
“WOW! *N Sync did that!” Trevor smiled, “Now us.”
“We gotta sing like we’ve never sung before,” Dan stated.
“You guys have amazing voices. You don’t need to worry,” Mel said, putting an arm around Dan.
“ASHLEY! ASHLEY! ASHLEY!” A group of three girls came running up.
“Can we have your autographs?” One girl asked.
“Can I have a kiss?” Another asked and Ashley kissed her cheek, “Oh my God! Will you marry me?”
“Maybe,” He smiled.
“Trevor could I have a hug?” The shy girl asked softly. Trevor gave her a big bear hug.
“Thank you. You guys are great,” She blushed.
“What’s your name?” Asked Trevor.
“I’m Amy, I’m 20, like you,” She smiled.
“Are you girls going to the show tonight?” Erik asked.
“We have nosebleed seats,” Amy said.
“Not anymore,” Jacob handed them three floor tickets.
“Oh my gosh!” The two panicky girls screamed.
“Thank you,” Amy said, calmly.
Trevor kissed Amy’s cheek, “See you soon,” He said, as the girls walked away.
“How’d they get in here?” Dan asked.
“I dunno, but Amy is cute,” Trevor grinned.
“Yeah,” Dan grinned and held Mel’s hand, “Not as much as you though.”
“What’s wrong?” Jacob whispered in Lyndsey’s ear.
“He was flirting. Oh well, it doesn’t seem to bother Mel,” She replied.
“Come on. Let’s find the dressing room,” Erik said. They found a gigantic dressing room, where the guys’ outfits were already there.
“Wow!” Exclaimed Lyndsey.
“This is cool,” Replied Mel, with a nod. Lyndsey knew that as long as she was dating Jacob she would be living in a world of suitcase. She’d live in it forever.
Chapter 10
“Showtime!” Jay announced. The guys got in a group huddle and they said a prayer. Jacob kissed Lyndsey, “Now I’ll have good luck.”
They walked down a hallway through some curtains and started off with a fast track. To end the show they sand ‘Baby I Would’ a cappella. “Wow,” Lyndsey and Mel said in unison, from behind the curtains.
They waved and exited the stage. Jay handed them all towels and they went right back to their dressing room. The girls followed. “O-Town only,” A security guard said.
Jacob walked up behind him, and pulled both of them by their hands into the dressing room.
“Hey! Only you guys are allowed in there,” He yelled.
“J, just close the door,” Ashley began, knowing how Jacob’s arguments can heat up.
“No, they’re staying here with us,” Jacob argued.
“Rules are rules. We’re given orders to not let anyone in except you. Not ever your managers,” He exclaimed.
“Alright,” Jacob said. He grabbed Lyndsey’s hand and stormed out. She had to almost run to keep up.
“Jacob! Stop!” She screeched.
“Why?” He stopped.
“You’re hurting my hand and I can’t walk that fast,” She laughed a bit.
“Sorry,” He hugged her, “I hate being told what to do. That’s the downside of all this.”
“Let’s go for something to eat,” She suggested. He nodded and they put one arm around each other’s waist and left the building.
“I haven’t even changed,” He laughed, as they were walking.
“It doesn’t matter what you wear,” She said.
“Or don’t wear,” He grinned and she blushed.
“Let’s get a soda at the diner over there,” Lyndsey said, “Mmm...chocolate cheesecake,” Lyndsey licked her lips, “Wanna split a piece with me?”
“I don’t have cash on me,” Jacob replied.
“I’m paying for it, silly,” She said.
She ordered a piece of chocolate cheesecake and two root beer floats. “This is so good,” She said.
He was staring at her. “What?” She asked, “Do I have chocolate all over my face?”
He grinned and looked at his lap and back up again,” No.”
“Then what?” She asked.
“You’re beautiful and I love you,” He smiled.
“Awe,” She whispered and playfully punched him.
“This has been a good night,” He said.
“You’re right, hottie,” She laughed. He laughed too, “Hottie?”
“Well, you’re hot. You don’t like that? Ok, I won’t call you hottie, sexy,” She laughed. This time he blushed. He leaned over and kissed her.
Lyndsey’s cell phone went off, mid-kiss. “Hello?” She said.
“Yeah, we’re fine. What? Ok, give us 5 minutes,” She said and hung up.
“What-,” Jacob got cut off.
“No time to explain,” She exclaimed, throwing $20 on the table, “We gotta go back.” She pulled his hand, and they ran all the way back down the street, to the venue. They were red in the face when they got there.
“What’s going on?” Jacob asked.
“The record execs are coming in 10 minutes. We have to sing a cappella for them,” Dan explained.
Jacob put his arms around Lyndsey, “You ok?”
She nodded, “Can’t breathe.”
Jacob sat her down, “I swear, if that security guard comes back…,” He rubbed her back, “Better?” She shook her head, as the record executives entered.
“We’re going to sing All or Nothing a cappella, for you,” Erik announced and they began singing.
As they finished the record executives clapped. “Wonderful! You’ll be perfect for our pay-per-view special,” The woman said.
After they left, Jacob went back to Lyndsey’s side, “Better?”
“I’m ok, but I’m speechless. That was amazing,” She said.
“Thanks,” Jacob said.
The guys changed and got their things, and loaded up the van. Lyndsey and Mel paid for a room next to Jacob and Dan. They kissed them goodnight and settled in.
“This has been quite a day,” Mel said.
“I can handle it. Jacob makes it easy,” Smiled Lyndsey.
“I know the feeling,” Mel mumbled as she fell asleep, in her bed.
Chapter 11
Bright and early the next morning Jacob was knocking on their door. “Wake up girls,” He said in a funny voice.
Lyndsey stumbled out of bed, opened the door and fell into his arms. “Tired much?” He laughed.
The girls got dressed and packed. “Another day,” Laughed Lyndsey.
“Goodie,” Mel mumbled.
They went to a building downtown LA to do a photo shoot. The guys were getting makeup put on and the girls were laughing at them.
“And you bug me about makeup?” Joked Lyndsey.
He tried not to laugh but he couldn’t help it.
“I’m done,” Trevor belched out from behind Lyndsey. She was in tears laughing.
“That always makes me laugh,” She giggled.
“It would,” Mel said.
“Are you ok?” Dan asked.
“Yeah. Just fine,” She answered.
Lyndsey wasn’t buying it. She glanced at Jacob, “This is fun,” She sat on his lap, when his makeup was done,
“I love being with you.”
“Diddo,” He gave her a peck on the cheek. The guys went off to do the photo shoot for Seventeen Magazine. In the middle of the shoot, Jacob made a heart sign with his hands, in Lyndsey’s direction.
“I hope they use that picture,” He said later.
“The fans don’t know about us,” Lyndsey said.
“They will eventually. It’s amazing that reporters haven’t asked me about a girlfriend in a while. Wait until Seventeen does the interview,” Laughed Jacob, “I’ll eat my words.”
“Right this way please,” A woman led the guys into a big room.
“So, let’s get started,” She said as she hit record on her tape recorder, “The burning question is on your status! Do any of you have a special someone?”
Jacob laughed, “Yes, I have a very special someone.”
“Not me,” Erik said.
“Not me," Ashley replied.
“I’m seeing someone,” Dan replied.
“I’m single,” Trevor said.
“Three bachelors I see,” She smiled, “Are the lucky gals in the entertainment business?”
“No,” Dan responded.
“There are regular people, except very special to us,” Jacob smiled, and shifted in his chair.
“Would you guys ever date a fan?” She asked.
“Yes,” They all replied, except Jacob who said, “I already am.”
“So your American tour has started. Any special surprises?” She asked.
“Maybe. You’ll have to check out the show to see,” Erik grinned.
“Actually, you’re the first to hear. We’re going to be doing a pay-per-view show,” Dan announced.
“WOW! That’s great,” She said, “I can hear the fans just screaming right now.”
“We’re excited,” Trevor said.
After the interview, they went back out to the girls. “How did it go?” Asked Lyndsey.
“Great. The whole world will know I’m taken by a special girl,” Jacob kissed her.
“I love you so much,” Lyndsey threw her arms around him.
“I’m so happy,” He said, “I don’t know how your scum sucking ex-boyfriend could have ever treated you so bad.”
She frowned, “I had almost forgotten…but it’s ok because I’m finally in love.”
“Me too,” He kissed her forehead.
“Well, I heard Trevor say something about going to a sports bar tonight, so I’ll go back to the hotel and let you guys have fun,” Lyndsey said.
“Ok, but if you’re bored come and join us, ok?” He asked.
“Ok, bye, I love you,” She kissed him.
“I love you too,” He hugged her and she left.
(LATER)
“To success,” Erik held up his beer.
“Success and money and girls,” Trevor laughed, and the guys drank their beer.
“Aren’t you guys in that boyband?” A guy beside them asked.
“Yeah, that’s us,” Ashley smiled.
“Yeah, my cousin listens to you guys,” He said.
“We’re just having a night of relaxation,” Jacob said,
“And air hockey.”
“Air hockey? Can I challenge you? I’m the best,” He said.
“Second best,” Jacob said.
After an hour Lyndsey decided to join them. “Hey Erik,” She greeted him with a hug, “Where’s Jacob?”
“J was playing air hockey with some guy,” He began.
“Yeah, they still are. Air hockey and beer,” Trevor laughed, “Gooooood.”
Lyndsey laughed and grabbed a glass of pop, “I’m still not a drinker.”
“That’s a good thing, I can’t even drink yet,” Ashley poked fun at his age.
“I’m gonna find Jacob,” Lyndsey said, turning the corner. She found Jacob. She froze and stood there watching Jacob having fun, playing air hockey. She was still frozen when the glass slipped from her hands and smashed to the floor. She didn’t move.
Ashley took her arm,” Are you ok? Did the glass hit you?”
“No,” She said.
“Good,” He said, noticing she wasn’t moving, “What’s wrong?”
She didn’t say anything for a minute, “Nothing,” She finally spoke and turned around, “Um, I’ll be in the ladies’ room,” She ran off.
Ashley went over to Jacob, “Your girl is here,” He teased but then got serious, “I think something is wrong.”
“Hasn’t she had enough wrong lately?” He said.
“Forget her. Sounds like too much trouble,” The guy said.
“No way,” Jacob told him, “I love her.”
“Chics,” He frowned and walked away.
Jacob waited for 15 minutes, but she didn’t come back. He went and stood outside the ladies’ room. He knocked and Lyndsey came out.
“Hi,” She faked a smile.
“What’s going on?” He said, holding her hand, leading her to the table.
She glanced over and stepped back. “You can tell me if something’s wrong,” He said.
“I know,” She kept holding his hand tighter, “Can we go home first?”
Jacob agreed and they headed to the door just as the guy, who Jacob played air hockey with, walked up.
“Lookie here,” He said.
“Jacob let’s go,” She said.
“She’s intimidated,” The guy laughed.
“Big word for a big ass,” She snapped back.
“You know each other?” Jacob asked, extremely confused.
“This is the chic I dumped cause’ she was boring and wouldn’t give any,” The guy replied.
With every ounce of strength in his body, Jacob hit him as hard as he could. He grabbed him and threatened, “Don’t ever say a word about her…Don’t go near her…Stay away!”
The guy scurried out of the bar with a bloody nose. Jacob turned around, “If I had known…”
“J, there’s nothing more to talk about,” Dan said. Lyndsey stood there, frozen. Trevor put his hand on Lyndsey’s back and led her to her seat. Jacob sat across from her. He was staring at her. She had a tear roll down her face, “Jacob? Please don’t hate me.”
“Hate you? I hate him. How dare he say anything bad about you?” He exclaimed as he kept staring at her,
“Are you ok?”
“No, but I’m not going to let him hurt me again,” She wiped away her tears.
“I was talking to the creep,” Jacob put his head down and then got up. He sat next to Lyndsey and wrapped his arms around her, “Why does this bad stuff keep happening?”
“I don’t know and honestly I don’t care because I have you in my life,” She hugged him.
“I hate that guy…you’re not boring….God…I hate him….I hope you know I love you for you and I don’t care about ‘getting any’,” He said.
She kissed him, “I’m going to be with you forever, and I will love you forever, no matter what.”
Chapter 12
Lyndsey awoke the next morning alone in her bed. Jacob had stayed until she had fallen asleep. “He left,” She frowned, as she slowly climbed out of bed.
She wandered into the kitchen to the aroma of cinnamon. French toast sat on the table on a plate. Jacob walked out of the living room, “Hi,” He said.
“French toast?” She asked, surprised.
“You don’t like it? I can throw it out and start again. I thought it was your-.”
“Favourite,” She finished, “It is,” She grinned.
He pulled out a chair for her, “No more bad luck,” He said and she rolled her eyes.
Lyndsey bit into her French toast just as the phone rang. “Hello?” She answered it.
“Is this Lyndsey?” A woman’s voice said.
“Yes it is.”
“This is Debbie calling from the Disney store. We have a ballot that you filled out a while back to win a $500 shopping spree in our store,” She said.
“Really?” Lyndsey glared at Jacob.
“If you’d like to come down this afternoon to claim the certificate,” She began.
“I’d love to,” Replied Lyndsey.
“Who was that?” Asked Jacob when she got off the phone.
“Very funny. 500 dollars?” She said.
“You won 500 dollars?” He asked.
“Worth of Disney stuff, as if you didn’t know,” She replied.
“I didn’t,” He said.
“Did you pay the store the money and tell them to,” She began, bluntly.
“No, I didn’t,” He answered, “I know you don’t take expensive gifts easily. If I wanted to buy you stuff I’d go buy it and give it to you.” Lyndsey frowned.
“Ok, I’ll drive you down there, you can ask the woman,” He insisted.
“Ok, after I chow down,” She sat back down and picked up her French toast.
“Do you like it?” He asked.
“I love it. It’s amazing,” She put it down and stood up. She put her arms around his neck, “But not as amazing as other things,” and she started kissing him.
(LATER)
“Is it possible to see the ballot?” Asked Lyndsey.
“Of course,” The Disney woman smiled, and went in the back room.
“Look at all this stuff,” Jacob said.
The woman returned with a ballot. “It’s my writing,” She was shocked.
“See,” Jacob laughed.
“Sorry,” She giggled.
The woman handed her a certificate, “Shop away,” She smiled.
“Wow,” Lyndsey sighed.
“Wow is right,” Laughed Jacob.
“Tigger!” She exclaimed and went running. She picked out 100 dollars worth of Winnie the Pooh stuff, and then some stuff for her friends.
“I have like $150 left,” She said.
“You could take that stuff to your car and I will just ring it up and give you the total of what you have left,” The woman offered.
Jacob took the stuff to the car. Lyndsey waited with bags when he returned.
“Whoa, that was fast,” He said, “Did you get stuff for yourself this time,” He kidded.
“Nope,” She smiled. When they got home she put a few bags away and kept two bags out. She turned them upside down and dumped out 15 stuffed toys.
“Wow, how many people will these belong to?” He laughed.
“One,” She grinned and gave him a soft kiss.
“Me? I can’t, that was your money,” He began.
“Trust me,” She said, “If I had all the money in the world, I’d spend it all on you.”
He kissed her, “You’re amazing.”
Chapter 13
(TWO MONTHS LATER)
“Look at them. They’re attached at the hip,” Lyndsey said sarcastically, as she watched Mel and Dan walk together in the mall.
“They’re in love,” Jacob said, “Where do you want to go?”
“Hmm…how about the popcorn place?” She suggested and they split up from Mel and Dan.
“Mmm…white cheddar. Ohhhh, there’s dill pickle,” Lyndsey groaned.
“Then I’ll buy both,” Jacob got out his money.
“Thanks,” She linked arms with him.
“Where did Mel and Dan go? We should catch up with them,” Lyndsey said and munched on some popcorn.
They went walking around the mall twice but couldn’t find them. “They must have gone home,” Jacob assumed.
Jacob went back to Lyndsey’s apartment. “Mel’s not home,” Lyndsey replied.
“She’s with Dan. She’ll be ok,” Jacob said.
Lyndsey went in the kitchen and dialed a number. “Who are you calling?” Jacob asked.
“Dan,” She answered and waited, “His phone is off.”
Jacob gave her a look. “I know, everything is fine. Let’s watch a movie,” She said, “We’ve got popcorn,” She laughed.
They cuddled on the couch for a movie and eventually fell asleep. Around 2am Lyndsey woke up. She looked around. Everything was quiet. She got up without waking up Jacob. She went into Mel’s room. She opened the door. Mel’s bed was empty. Lyndsey began to worry. She dialed Dan’s cell number, “Damn!” She screamed.
Jacob woke up, “What’s going on?” He asked, getting up, off the couch.
“Mel’s not home yet,” She answered, “I’m worried.”
“Come on,” Jacob grabbed her hand.
Jacob drove over to Trevor and Dan’s apartment. Jacob buzzed up. “Hello?” A voice asked.
“Trev, it’s Lyndsey. I’m sorry it’s late. Can you let us up?” She said quickly.
Trevor was waiting for them. “You didn’t wake me up. I’m waiting for Dan,” He explained.
“Mel didn’t come home,” Jacob replied.
The phone rang and Trevor answered, “Hey, man, where are you? What? No, wait.” Trevor hung up, “It was Dan. He’s with Mel and they’ll be home tomorrow.” Lyndsey sighed and Jacob cuddled her, “I worry too much.”
“You shouldn’t,” Jacob said, “I’m here.” She kissed him.
“Go to bed, get a room,” Trevor teased.
They went back to Lyndsey’s apartment to go to bed. Mel came in the next morning. “Where were you?” Lyndsey questioned her.
“With Dan,” She smiled.
“With Dan or WITH Dan?” Lyndsey asked, wide-eyed.
“We cuddled under the stars. Why so many questions?” She asked.
“Hmm, gee let me think? Duh, because you didn’t call,” Lyndsey replied.
“Dan,” Mel began.
“He barely told Trevor anything,” Lyndsey replied.
“I’m sorry,” Mel said, smiling.
“Forget it,” Lyndsey walked away into her bedroom. Mel went in her room and flopped onto her bed. Jacob followed Lyndsey, “Just be happy that they’re happy.”
“I am,” She said, “Everything’s forgotten.” He took her hand and pulled her up, “We have to get to the studio to record our first single.”
“Let’s go,” She sighed. Mel was ready to go, “Mind if I ride with you?”
“No, the more the merrier,” Lyndsey replied. Jacob drove to a studio where hundreds of girls were waiting and screaming.
“Oh gosh,” Mel replied.”
“What’s with the gloves?” Jacob asked as they pulled up.
“I hit my hand and I have this nasty bruise. It’s so ugly. You know me. Everything has to be perfect,” She quickly explained.
They got out of the car. Mel ran ahead first and Lyndsey clutched onto Jacob’s hand. Girls were pushing Lyndsey and grabbing her and Jacob. They made it up the stairs.
“Oh no!” Lyndsey screamed, turning around, going back down the steps.
Jacob grabbed her arms, “You’ll get trampled.” “But my ring!” She screamed, and Jacob led her inside.
“My ring from my grandpa for my 16th birthday,” She told him, “Someone grabbed it.”
“I’ll go look for it,” Jacob said.
Lyndsey stopped him, “Don’t bother. It’ll be gone,” She frowned. She sat down. He had his arm around her, and sat next to her.
“My ring,” She said in shock, “It was my most special possession.”
Jacob rubbed her arm, “I’m sorry.” Mel was talking with Dan in private.
“Something’s going on with them,” Ashley said to Erik.
“We gotta find out,” Smiled Erik, slowly moving towards them but they moved away.
“Ring,” Erik said.
“My ring?” Lyndsey’s eyes widened.
“I don’t know. They’re talking about a ring,” Erik said. Trevor shrugged his shoulders.
“I’m going to get drinks,” Mel went off.
Dan came out walking towards them. “Dan, can we talk?” Lyndsey asked.
“Sure,” He smiled.
“We’re good friends right? We tell each other lots of stuff,” She said.
“Yeah, you’re like a sister to me, sorta,” He started laughing.
“What’s going on with you and Mel?” She asked. Dan’s face went blank, “Nothing,” He paused, “It’s pretty warm in here. Mel should take her gloves off,” Dan winked at her, and walked away.
“Hey,” Jacob came out of the sound room and saw Lyndsey’s puzzled face.
“Oh my God,” Lyndsey said, “No way.”
“What?” He asked.
“Mel didn’t hurt her hand,” She exclaimed, “And a ring? DAN PROPOSED!”
Chapter 14
“Pepsi anyone?” Mel came back in the room. Lyndsey just stared at her.
“What?” She giggled.
“Would you like to tell me anything?” Lyndsey asked.
“Oh, sorry,” She said, “You drink diet Pepsi,” She went towards the door.
“No, I don’t care about diet Pepsi,” She said.
Mel shrugged her shoulders and sat down on a chair, watching Dan through the window, as he was recording. Jacob was watching Lyndsey, who was watching Mel, “Aren’t you hot with those gloves on?” He asked.
“No,” Mel quickly replied.
“So, when’s the big day?” Lyndsey suddenly blurted out.
“Huh?” Mel said, surprised.
Lyndsey leaned over and pulled Mel’s glove off,” Why is that such a secret?” Dan came out of the recording room, “Oh,” He mumbled.
“We’re really happy for you guys. You just didn’t have to keep it a secret,” Lyndsey said.
“Ok,” Mel admitted, “Dan and I went on a romantic weekend, and he proposed. We thought we should wait to tell you because…well, we thought you’d think because you’ve been together longer and you’re not…well I’m glad you’re ok with it,” She hugged everyone.
“This is cool,” Trevor said.
“Dan’s getting hitched,” Erik said.
“We’re going to take a while to plan a big wedding,” Dan replied.
“And let you guys finish the album,” Mel said, hugging Dan’s waist.
“Jacob, you’re up,” Jay said, pointing to the recording room.
“Are you ok with this?” Mel asked.
“Of course. I’m more then happy for you,” Lyndsey said.
“You’re the best,” Mel gave her a friendly hug.
“No, you and Dan are,” Lyndsey smiled.
“Dan, you and your fiancée can go to lunch. Be back by 2,” Jay said.
They left and Lyndsey sat down. She had a blank look on her face. That night Jacob and Lyndsey were cuddling on her bed while watching TV. Jacob heard sniffling. “Hey, what’s wrong? Are you crying?” He leaned over her but she covered her face.
“No,” She mumbled.
“The dog won’t die,” Jacob said, about the movie they were watching.
She rested her head on her arm. Jacob kept hearing sniffles. “Why are you crying?” He asked, concerned
She got up, “I’m not,” and quickly walked into the bathroom.
“What was that about?” Mel asked, as Jacob came out from Lyndsey’s room.
“I don’t know,” He said, “I’ve gotta go but I don’t want to leave her like this, if something’s bugging her.”
“I’ll talk to her. You go, and I’ll tell you what’s up tomorrow,” Mel said.
Jacob nodded, got his jacket and left. After 10 minutes, Lyndsey came out from the bathroom. “Hey, why so glum chum?” Asked Mel.
“I’m fine,” Lyndsey faked a smile, and went to the fridge and poured some chocolate milk into a glass.
“You can tell me,” She said.
“Alright, but I don’t want this getting to Jacob. It’d hurt his feelings,” She replied, “With you and Dan getting engaged, it made me realize that Jacob and I aren’t going anywhere. We’re in love but we’re stuck. I feel like I’m going to have to wait a few years before we even discuss marriage. “
“Try and bring it up,” Mel suggested.
“No way. He and I are in sync. We know what each other are thinking. He’ll know and it could scare him away,” Lyndsey said.
“Ok, it’s up to you,” Mel answered, “But as long as you’re together…”
“That’s what matters,” She answered, with a sigh.
(THE NEXT DAY)
“We gotta meet the guys at the dance studio in 20 minutes. Hurry,” Mel yelled to Lyndsey, from the door. They got to the studios at 10am sharp.
“Hey,” Mel greeted Dan with a kiss.
“Feel better?” Jacob asked and kissed Lyndsey’s forehead.
“I’m fine,” She whispered to him.
“Ok,” He said, pulling away.
“Are you mad at me?” She asked.
“No, it just doesn’t seem like you trust me,” He looked down.
“I do, I love you,” She kissed him.
He went over to the guys to start learning the new dance moves. “Good, good,” Tyjuan replied after they finished the new dance.
“Hey, isn’t it your one year anniversary tomorrow?” Erik asked Jacob.
“Yeah,” He frowned, “And it sucks cause’ something is bothering Lyndsey, but she won’t tell me what it is.”
“I can,” Mel said, walking up, “Later,” and Lyndsey came up behind them, and Mel closed her mouth.
“You can what?” Lyndsey asked, curiously.
“Stay here with everyone, all day,” Mel lied.
“Me too,” Lyndsey replied, and went and sat down on the couch off to the side of the dance floor. Mel followed and they watched the guys practice a new routine.
“Wow, they’re amazing, as usual,” Mel commented. Lyndsey nodded as she was looking down.
“Be happy,” Mel said.
“But I’m not,” She replied.
“If Dan and I hadn’t gotten engaged, would you have been this upset about this marriage issue?” Mel asked.
“I don’t know,” Whispered Lyndsey.
“Seriously,” Mel said.
“Probably not this much but…” She began.
“BUT…you have a great guy who loves you,” Mel said. Lyndsey sighed, ‘Nobody understands. The whole marriage issue just got me thinking…nobody understands,’ She thought to herself.
“Good, take 5,” Tyjuan said.
The guys took a break. Wiping his forehead, Jacob walked towards Lyndsey. She wrapped her arms around him as tight as she could and closed her eyes. “Thanks, I really needed that,” She said to him, and she turned and headed for the door and left.
Chapter 15
“Whoa…something is bothering her,” Trevor said.
“Is she coming back,” Ashley asked.
“Probably not today,” Mel said.
“What’s going on? I can’t stand not being able to help her,” Jacob said.
“Look, I know I said I’d tell but Lyndsey told me not to, so I can’t,” Mel said.
“Fine,” Jacob replied, “Let’s practice,” He turned his back on the others.
“Is she okay?” Ashley asked.
Mel nodded, “She’ll be fine. It’s nothing.”
By the end of the day, Lyndsey hadn’t come back. Everyone went home except Jacob. He sat at the studios until 11pm. Then he grabbed his jacket and patted the pocket and began to drive home. While he was driving he spotted Lyndsey sitting by a river on a rock. He got out, and walking up behind her, he wrapped his arms around her. She knew his touch, so she wasn’t startled. “Does that help?” He asked.
“A little,” She answered, in a soft whisper.
“You can tell me anything,” He said, “Does this have to do with Dan and Mel getting engaged?”
Her head sunk, and he said, “Oh, it’s all making sense. You think that because they got together after us and they’re engaged, it means that we won’t ever be married?”
She kept her head down, “It’s not…”
He stroked her hair, “We’re going to spend the rest of our lives together,” He reached in his pocket and pulled out a gold locket and held it in front of her. Inscripted it read: ‘Our love will outlast our existence.’ He kept stroking her hair, “I promise,” He whispered. She felt a tear roll down her cheek.
“Happy Anniversary,” He said after his watch beeped for midnight, “I hope it makes up for the ring you lost.”
“It does,” Lyndsey smiled and turned. She slipped a gold ring on his pinky.
The inscription said: ‘My heart is yours forever.’ They kissed for a long moment. They separated and Lyndsey backed away putting her hands to her head, “I’m sorry.”
“It’s alright now, isn’t it?” He asked, holding her.
“I still feel bad. I didn’t come to you because I thought I’d scare you away,” She explained.
“You never could,” He kissed her neck, “You can tell me anything. I’ll always be on your side.”
“I love you more than anything, more than life,” She told him. He looked stunned. He could only grab her and kiss her.
(THE NEXT DAY)
“Look at this,” Jacob pulled Lyndsey on his lap at the studios. He had drawn a symbol for them that looked like this:
“That’s cute. J + L,” She awed.
“Me and my doodles,” He laughed.
She leaned over and whispered in his ear.
“Are you sure? Really, really sure?” He asked, extremely surprised, “I’m up for it.
On their lunch break Jacob and Lyndsey drove down to a tattoo parlour.
“This is the same place I got my first tattoo,” He said, “I’ll get this one beside it.”
“I’m going to get it on my lower back at the base of my back,” She said.
Jacob got his first. Lyndsey was pale. She lay down on the little table with her lower back exposed. She clutched onto Jacob’s hand.
“You don’t have to,” He said.
“Yes, I love you, I want it,” She insisted.
The man began and Lyndsey’s face turned red.
“Are you ok?” Jacob laughed out.
“It’s not funny,” She laughed, “It hurts.”
He kissed her forehead, “Poor baby,” He teased, “You can’t see the blood from this angle.”
“BLOOD!?” She screamed.
He laughed, “A little. Relax,” He kept laughing.
After half an hour it was finished.
He kissed her, “I love you,” He rubbed his fingers over her tattoo, “In a million years, I’d never have expected you to do this.”
“It’s sore,” She moved over and picked up her things,
“$75 of pain, but it’s worth it.”
He grabbed her hand as they left to go back to the studios.
“Where have you two been?” Mel asked.
“Expressing ourselves,” Jacob smirked.
“WHOA and you weren’t arrested?” Trevor said and Ashley playfully punched him.
“No sicko,” Laughed Jacob as he turned and pulled up his shirt.
“That’s so cute,” Mel said, “He went through pain for you Lynds.”
Lyndsey made a face.
“What?” Mel said.
Lyndsey turned, and Jacob lifted up the end of her shirt, exposing her tattoo.
“WOW,” Dan said, “I’d never have though…”
“That I’d get a tattoo, but I did,” She smiled,
“Permanent.”
“Like us,” Jacob grinned.
“That’s a cool idea,” Mel said.
“Don’t get any ideas. I hate needles,” Dan put up his hands, “Let’s stick with press-ons.”
Lyndsey sat on the edge of the couch, leaning forward as she watched the guys dance. She stood up and stretched after an hour.
“Ashley, go with the flow…” Tyjuan said, “Jacob…keep dancing…Trevor…be Trevor,” He laughed.
Lyndsey slipped out the back door and sat on the steps and Mell followed.
“Hurts?” Mel asked.
“Very much,” Replied Lyndsey, “So, have you and Dan talked about a wedding date?”
“We’re thinking, we’d like a January wedding,” Mel smiled.
“But it’s already September,” Lyndsey said, “Why not wait until Spring? You said you were going to wait a while.”
“It’s still warm, we’ll be travelling in the southern U.S. We want to be married soon,” Mel said, “Plus to us, four months of planning is a while.”
“You’re lucky,” Lyndsey said.
“We’re committed to each other,” Mel said and went back inside.
“Us too,” Lyndsey said to herself, “We don’t need to be married now to be committed…but it’d be nice.”
She went inside and sat on the edge of the couch again and watched Jacob. He noticed but kept dancing. When they were ready to leave he asked, “Why were you looking at me so long?”
“I was just thinking,” She said.
“About what?” He asked.
“Just how one year ago my life was a mess and now it’s perfect,” She gave him a kiss, “Thanks.”
Chapter 16
“A night off, finally,” Erik said, “I’m going clubbing. Who’s coming?”
“I’m in,” Jacob said.
“Me too,” Lyndsey and Ashley said.
“We’re going to dinner but we’ll come later,” Dan said.
“I’ll go,” Trevor agreed.
They changed and headed to the club.
“Par-ty!” Trevor said and danced away.
“Let’s dance,” Lyndsey went off with Jacob.
“How you doin’?” Trevor asked a tall blonde.
She laughed.
“Sorry about my friend, he’s crazy,” Smiled Ashley,
“My name is Ashley.”
“I know and that’s Trevor. I’m Danielle,” She started dancing with him.
“Ooh, looks like Ashley found a dance partner,”
Lyndsey said, dancing slowly to a fast song.
“You really are tired, aren’t you?” He laughed.
“I don’t know how you do it. I’m exhausted from travelling around,” She sighed.
“I’m glad you came,” He kissed her.
“Me too, but I wish we could spend a day off to sleep,” She laughed, “Let’s go home…”
“No, I want to stay. I never get a night off,” He refused.
“I know, it’s just you know you’ll be tired tomorrow,” He replied.
“So?” He said.
She backed away, “I’m going to the ladies’ room.”
After twenty minutes Mel and Dan arrived.
“Hey Erik!” Mel greeted him over the loud music,
“Where’s Lyndsey and Jacob?”
Erik pointed to a lonely Jacob standing 10 meters away and they walked over to him.
“Hey,” Dan smiled, “What’s going on?”
“Lyndsey’s be in the ladies’ room for twenty minutes. I think she’s mad cause’ I wouldn’t go home,” Jacob explained.
“I’ll be right back,” Mel muttered and headed to the washroom, “Oh my god! What’s wrong?”
Lyndsey was kneeling over the counter.
“I’m fine, I just felt like I was going to faint,” She said, softly.
“Maybe you should go home?” Suggested Mel.
Lyndsey laughed, sarcastically. She left the washroom and joined Jacob and Dan.
“Lynds?” Mel followed and glared at her.
“I’m fine,” Lyndsey glared back, as Trevor came over and whisked her off to dance.
“You think things can’t get any worse and now she’s mad at me,” Jacob said.
“She didn’t mention anything to me about being mad at you,” Mel said.
“Good,” Sighed Jacob, “I want things to go back to normal, like an hour ago,” He laughed.
Mel whispered in Jacob’s ear, “Keep an eye on her and make sure she’s ok.”
He mouthed the word ‘What?’ and scrunched his nose, as Dan and Mel went off to dance. Jacob cut in on Trevor and Lyndsey as a slow song began.
They held each other close.
“If you still want to go home…” He started to say.
“No,” She whispered with her eyes closed.
As the song ended, they walked over to a booth. Lyndsey tripped just as she got there. She hit her head on the table on her way down.
Jacob kneeled down, “Are you alright?”
She stood up and sat in the far end of the booth, “Here we go again,” She mumbled.
Jacob scooted in next to her. He ran his fingers over the bump that had already formed on her head. He kissed her head and she smiled.
Dan walked up and sat across from them, “Are you ok Lynds? Mel told me about earlier…”
“What about earlier?” Questioned Jacob.
“It’s nothing,” She said.
“Sorry. I’ll leave,” Dan got up and scurried away.
“Would you like to fill me in?” He asked.
“I almost passed out, it was no big deal. I’m fine, the end,” She looked away.
He wrapped his arms around her, “I care…”
“But I’m fine,” She said, “And I will admit I tripped because I felt faintish again…but I’m okay.”
He took her hand and pulled her out of the booth, “Let’s go.”
He got her to the car.
“You don’t want to leave. You stay and I’ll go,” She suggested.
He looked deep into her eyes, “I love you and I care about you. You’re exhausted and it’s because of me. I want to go home, get you in bed and hold you all night.”
“I love you,” She kissed him, “But don’t ever think anything is your fault because I chose to come along because I love you,” She kissed him again for a while.
“A cuddle sounds pretty good right now,” He said, and drove home.
“It’s only eleven o’clock…” She said softly, with her eyes half-closed as she and Jacob were lying on her bed watching TV, “You should be out enjoying your night off.”
“I am, I’m with you,” He looked into her eyes and kissed her.
She closed her eyes, “But it’s early…”
He stroked her hair and within two minutes she was asleep.
“Lyndsey?” Jacob whispered around 7am the next day,
“Lyndsey? We have to go…”
She opened half an eye, “I can’t.”
“Why not?” He said, confused.
“I’m too tired,” She mumbled, and was asleep again.
Jacob kissed her head, “I love you,” He whispered and then left.
“Jacob?” Lyndsey awoke with a smile. It was Jacob’s picture her eyes were on. Her eyes shifted to her alarm clock, “3 PM?!” She screamed. She leaped out of bed and raced out of her room, “Jacob?” She called out.
Confused, she picked up the phone and dialed Jacob’s number.
“Jacob? Where are you?” She asked, “I’m sorry…”
She put her head down, “Buffalo? I guess I should grab my stuff and…what?”
“Stay there. Take a week or two off for yourself. You’re overtired,” Jacob said.
“Do you not want me there?” She asked.
“Of course I want you here. I’m just worried about you,” He said.
“Ok…I love you,” She said.
“I love you too, bye,” He hung up.
She flopped down on her bed and sighed.
“A week off,” She said to herself, “Feels good…” She frowned, “Jacob never gets a week off completely, and he won’t for the next 3 months.”
She looked at his picture and smiled, and the phone rang.
“Hey Lynds, what’s up?” It was Mel.
“Having fun in Buffalo?” Lyndsey asked.
“Like I’d leave my fiancée?” Laughed Mel.
“Aren’t you tired from travelling?” Asked Lyndsey.
“That was almost funny,” She said, “When am I ever tired? I’m hyper 24/7.”
“Oh yeah. I forgot,” Lyndsey said.
“Anyways, I was just calling to see how you were,” Mel stated, “Talk to you later.”
“Bye,” Lyndsey said.
Lyndsey was going to sleep all after noon but she couldn’t help but feel bad.
“I feel so selfish…they are all tired from everything,” She stood up, got dressed and grabbed an already packed suitcase and headed for her car.
By 7pm Lyndsey pulled up to the guys’ hotel. She walked into the lobby and heard Jacob’s voice.
“It’s good Lyndsey’s not here,” He said, “I can’t get this done with her here…”
Lyndsey turned and headed for the door.
Chapter 16
“Lyndsey! You came!” Mel came running from the elevator.
“Yeah,” She smiled, “But I left something…”
“Oh well, come on up,” Mel said.
“Hey,” Jacob said and he kissed her. Erik walked up
shortly after him.
“Hi,” She said in a quiet voice.
They went up to the huge suites, but everyone was hanging out in just one for the time being.
Jacob put his arm around Lyndsey and she casually moved away. She sat down on one of the beds, to watch TV with Trevor, Dan and Ashley.
“You should have stayed home,” Jacob said.
“Why? You guys can handle this, why can’t I?” She said.
“I know, you just shouldn’t have come,” He said.
“Ok,” She stood up and walked out of the room.
“What did you do that for?” Ashley asked.
Jacob didn’t answered, but he ran after Lyndsey,
“WAIT!” He yelled out.
“I’m leaving, like you want me to. It would be better if I’m not here. You can get things done when I’m here,” She turned away.
“You heard me?” He asked.
She turned and made a face.
“It’s not…” He began laughing, “Ok, this was supposed to be a special thing…”
Erik and the others came quietly off the elevator, and were watching them.
“I needed to plan some things and I’m sorry if you got the wrong idea,” He smiled, “I’m going to do this,
even though it’s nothing I expected…You know I love you…” He got on one knee, “Will you marry me?”
Lyndsey started to cry. The others were waiting for her answer.
She threw herself at him, “Of course!”
The others ran over clapping and congratulating them.
“I’m sorry I don’t have the ring yet…that’s why I needed you to stay home…I’m sorry,” He said.
“It doesn’t matter, we’re engaged, this is the happiest day of my life!” She kissed him.
“Awe, We should have a double wedding,” Mel suggested.
“We could but I don’t think two months is enough time…” Lyndsey said.
“Well then we can help each other plan,” Mel replied.
Jacob took her hand, “I’m still sorry…”
“Don’t say that. I have to stop worrying so much. I trust you and I love you,” She kissed his cheek.
“Let’s go celebrate,” He said, “Where do you want to go for dinner?”
“Anywhere. You choose,” She answered.
He drove down town to a little Mexican restaurant.
“Mmm…spicy and hot,” Jacob grinned, looking at a menu.
“You’re on the menu?” Smiled Lyndsey. Jacob blushed and turned away.
“Table for two, non-smoking,” Jacob told the person at the door.
The waiter took their order and brought a bubbling bottle of champagne.
“Here you go,” Jacob handed her a glass, “To us and a happy future.”
They sipped their champagne and kissed.
“I can’t wait to marry you,” Lyndsey said, “I wish we could marry before Dan and Mel…You know, cause’ we’ve been together longer.”
“We could elope,” Laughed Jacob.
“We could?” She raised her eyebrows.
“But what about your dream wedding of a white dress…outdoor ceremony…lots of flowers?” He pondered.
“I said that one time and you remember…” She was speechless for a moment, “I will have any wedding you want.”
“I want to give you the dream wedding our heart wants,” He kissed her cheek.
After dinner they came back to the hotel and lay down together on Jacob’s hotel bed.
“This is perfect. Not a worry in me,” She whispered.
The door opened and Mel and Dan entered.
“Where did you go?” Lyndsey asked, sitting up.
“Lynds…Jacob…We eloped!” Mel exclaimed.
“You what?!” Lyndsey exclaimed, “What about the wedding?”
“We’re going to have a little one with close family and friends, but we couldn’t wait to make this relationship final,” Dan explained.
“Isn’t this great?” Mel exclaimed.
Lyndsey hugged her, “I’m so happy for you.” She hugged Dan and Jacob hugged them.
Mel and Dan went off.
“Now for their honeymoon,” Teased Lyndsey.
“Are you really okay? Because I know how you wanted us to be married first,” Jacob put his arms around her.
“I’m fine. You and I are going to have the most amazing summer wedding,” She looked up at him.
“You bet,” He kissed her forehead.
“We could have a honeymoon,” She giggled and they embraced.
(ONE WEEK LATER, BACK IN ORLANDO)
“Steph!” Lyndsey screamed as she ran down the airport to meet her friend.
“Ahhh! LYNDS!” She exclaimed.
“Wait until you meet the guys,” Lyndsey said, “They are complete sweethearts.”
“Mmm…I need a sweetheart,” She said.
“What happened to Jay M?” Lyndsey asked.
“He’s such a dick,” She smiled, “I need an O-Town man, like you have.”
Lyndsey held up her hand, and they started screaming.
“Oh my God! AH!” Steph screamed as they walked to the car.
“Yeah, and Dan and Mel eloped…you missed out on so much this past year…and Ashley likes this girl named Danielle,” Lyndsey explained.
“Maybe I’ll meet someone while I hang out with you guys for the week?” She wondered.
They got back and Lyndsey introduced them all.
“This one is mine, as if you couldn’t tell by all the magazines and TV appearances,” Lyndsey clutched onto Jacob.
“If you need someone to show you around Orlando, until we travel of course, I’m your man,” Offered Trevor.
“That’s sweet, I’d love to,” She accepted.
“We’re going clubbing tonight, like we do on all our nights off,” Erik said.
“Great,” Steph said, “I’m gonna go get changed.”
They got ready an hour later and they were on their way to the nightclub.
“I’m sexy, I’m cute I’m popular to boot,” Sang Trevor as he entered the club.
“Bring It On,” Steph laughed, “I love that movie.”
“I’m bitchin’ great hair…” Laughed Erik.
“The boys all love to stare, I’m wanted I’m hot I’m everything you’re not,” Finished Lyndsey, until she couldn’t stop laughing.
Jacob put his hand on his face, as he was laughing.
“Let’s dance,” Lyndsey pulled Jacob away.
“Wanna dance?” Erik asked Steph.
“I’d love to,” She agreed.
“Nobody wants to dance with me,” Trevor made a sad face and spun around, and danced away.
By the middle of the night, everyone was having an amazing time.
“Do you think you’d like to have dinner with me sometime?” Erik asked.
“That’d be great,” She grinned as a slow song started,
“I’ll be back.”
She went to the other side of the room, “Need a dancing partner?” She asked Trevor, who was sitting alone.
“Sure, now you want to dance with me,” He joked and stood up.
They started to dance, and talk.
“Wanna go for coffee? We can get away from this noise,” Trevor asked.
“Ok,” Steph said.
“Trevor, this is kinda funny, because Erik asked me out,” Steph said.
“I technically did too, for coffee,” He laughed.
After an hour they went back to join the others.
“So, would you like to go for dinner tomorrow?” Erik whispered to Steph.
“Sounds great. I can’t wait,” She smiled and walked over to Lyndsey.
“Lynds, what should I do? Trevor and Erik both asked me out,” She said.
“Have fun,” Smiled Lyndsey, “Go on a couple of dates and see if you like either of them as more than a friend.”
“I hope this won’t make things weird,” She said,
“Anyways, it’s cool being here.”
(TWO WEEKS LATER)
“Mmm…” Lyndsey said after kissing Jacob.
“Hi guys,” Mel said, “I’m going shopping with Dan, see you later,” She waved and left.
“What’s wrong? Wasn’t that Trevor on the phone earlier?” Jacob asked, as Steph came in the room.
“Yeah, he wants us to date like “officially” but so does Erik,” She frowned.
“That’s tough…You have two great guys after you,” Lyndsey said.
“I know,” She groaned, “They’re both amazing but I don’t want one of them to be hurt…I couldn’t give Trevor my answer…” She left the room.
“So, she wants Erik?” Guessed Jacob.
“I dunno…I think she and Trev are more compatible,” Lyndsey said, “She’ll decide.”
“Whoever she chooses, I hope they’ll be happy. Whoever she doesn’t choose, we’ll find them someone,” Jacob said, “I found someone,” He hugged her.
Steph came back, “I know what I have to do.” She went for the door, “Cross your fingers,” She left.
Chapter 17
“Trevor, what’s wrong?” Lyndsey asked, as she entered his bedroom, “It’s Steph, isn’t it? Did things go bad?”
“Actually no. She chose me,” Trevor sighed.
“Why are you so sad then? Aren’t you happy?” Asked Lyndsey.
“Yes, I really like Steph. She’s gone to talk to Erik right now, and I know when he gets home he’ll be angry.”
Lyndsey leaned over and give him a big hug, “You and Erik are both amazing people. I thought you and Steph are more suited together. I’ll find someone for Erik, I have my ways. Just be happy.”
“Thanks Lynds, I love you,” He hugged her, “Like a sister of course.”
“You’re my big brother,” She giggled just as a loud
thud caused Trevor’s door to his room to open.
“Thanks a lot,” Erik said, and walked away.
Lyndsey walked after him, “Erik, please let me talk to you.”
“Of course,” He opened the door for her, “I don’t have a problem with you.”
“Please don’t be mad at Trevor. He’s really upset,” She said.
“Why? He got her,” Erik grunted.
“So? I came home and found him really upset because he feels really bad about hurting you,” She said.
“Really?” Erik asked.
“Yes, and trust me any girl would love to be with you, I’ll find you someone,” Lyndsey smiled and gave him a hug.
“Any more friends back home?” He laughed.
“You two are so cute,” Mel said and Steph and Trevor were holding hands, and Lyndsey and Erik came from Erik’s room.
“Hi you two,” Erik said.
“Erik I’m” Trevor got interrupted.
“It’s all good,” They hugged.
“Oh yeah I forgot to tell you guys, we’ve got a fourth chica coming down to visit us in a couple of weeks. My friend Liz is coming. She is my other best friend. She’s a hoot. You guys will love her,” Mel explained.
“That she is. Liz is really nice,” Lyndsey smiled.
(THREE WEEKS LATER)
“Erik? Can you do me the biggest favour?” Mel asked.
“Sure,” He said.
“I told Dan I’d help him out with some music writing, could you do me the biggest favour by going to airport to pick up Liz. She’s tall … what does that matter? She’ll recognize you and she’ll come running to you,” Mel laughed.
“Ok, whatever you say,” Erik laughed, as he got his car keys and drove to the airport.
He stood around for half an hour waiting for people to get off the airplane. He finally heard a loud, “Oh my gosh! Erik?”
“Hi, you must be Liz, nice to meet you,” He grinned at her.
They drove back to the house to where everyone was
eating lunch.
“Mmm…I’m starved,” Liz said.
“Me too,” Erik said, “This must beat airplane food,” He laughed.
“By far,” Liz giggled.
“Oh yeah, I forgot to tell you guys, me and Trevor
were talking, and I’m going to be staying here with you guys,” Steph smiled.
“Boy do I feel like an outcast,” Liz laughed.
“You can stay here permanently,” Erik looked at her.
“Maybe,” She grinned.
“You girls are all coming to the show tomorrow night,
aren’t you?” Ashley asked.
“I wouldn’t miss it for the world,” Liz said.
“Me neither, even though we have seen it hmm… let’s see 74 times,” Laughed Lyndsey.
“I love watching you guys perform,” Steph said.
“Yeah me too,” Trevor laughed, and Steph pushed him, playfully.
(THE NEXT EVENING)
“I’m kind of nervous,” Trevor said, “I don’t know why, maybe because Steph’s watching.”
“So?” Ashley asked.
“Right. What am I thinking? I’m never nervous,” Trevor replied and shrugged his shoulders.
“Let’s go out there and kick major ass,” Jacob said.
They got on stage and rocked the place for two hours.
“Wow we got a great review,” Ashley said, the next morning when he opened the newspaper, “We’ve never had such a good review.”
“I don’t think we missed a single harmony, not even me,” Laughed Erik, “You must be my good luck charm Liz,” He winked at her and she blushed.
Mel nudged Lyndsey, “I can play matchmaker this time and get those two to go to dinner or something,” Mel suggested.
Lyndsey said, “Why don’t you to go to dinner sometime?”
“I’d like that,” Erik smiled.
“Me too,” Grinned Liz.
“Why must you spoil my fun?” Mel pouted, sarcastically.
“Ha ha,” Lyndsey laughed.
That evening Erik drove Liz to an Italian restaurant downtown.
“Yummm, spaghetti and meatballs, the real meatballs,” Liz said.
“I love Italian food,” Erik said, “It’s my favourite.”
“Really? Mine too!” Liz smiled, and then there was an awkward period of silence.
“I think I’ll have the Fettuccini Alfredo,” Erik told the waiter.
“And I will have the spaghetti and meatballs,” Liz told him.
“So have you thought about staying permanently to hang around with us?” Erik asked.
“Yeah I’ve been thinking, I mean it’s a hard decision,” She said.
“I know how it must be. You have your family and friends back home and then you’re out having fun and you can’t decide,” He said.
“Yeah, I guess I just need a special excuse to stay out here. I don’t know if my family will understand,” Liz said, and looked into Erik’s deep brown eyes.
“Dinner is served,” The waiter said, as he placed their plates on the table and walked away.
“He sounded like a butler,” Laughed Liz.
“Dinner is served,” Erik imitated him.
They laughed and then there was a brief pause.
“I guess you probably heard about me liking Steph?” Erik blurted out.
“Yes, Lyndsey mentioned it to me,” She answered, “Are you ok with Trevor and Stephanie dating?”
“Yeah, I’m cool with it. I did really like her, but then after I realized we were kind of different, we just didn’t-,”
“Have enough things in common?” Liz asked.
“Yeah,” He smiled, “We’re just friends. I think Trevor is the right person for them. I need someone who is more my type. Who will laugh at my stupid jokes.”
“Me too, nobody laughs at my corny jokes, except Mel, but that’s Mel,” Liz made a face and Erik smiled.
“Let’s get dessert,” Erik said when they finished.
“I don’t know if I have room,” Liz said.
“I just want to hear the waiter say-,” Erik began.
“Dessert is served,” They both said simultaneously.
“Ok, let’s share something,” Liz picked up the dessert menu.
“Chocolate,” They said in unison.
“Triple Chocolate Fudge mudslide please, with two forks,” Erik said.
The waiter went off and five minutes later returned and said, “Dessert is served,” and walked away.
Liz and Erik put their hands over their faces to cover their laughing.
They were still laughing when they were staring into each other’s eyes.
“Have you thought of a good reason to stay yet?” Asked Erik.
“Maybe,” Liz grinned.
Erik leaned in and gave her a soft kiss, “Is that a good enough reason?” He whispered.
Chapter 18
“Matchmaker matchmaker make me a match,” Liz sang, as she entered Mel’s room, where Lyndsey, Steph and Mel were talking.
“You’re in a good mood,” Lyndsey smiled, “How was dinner?”
Mel pushed her off the bed and all three of them started laughing, “She ruined my fun, so I’m going to ruin hers and ask you about dinner,” Laughed Mel.
“Let’s just say I’m going to be with you guys permanently. Oh and did I mention, I’ll be with Erik permanently?” She screeched and they all jumped up and down screaming.
“Are you girls ok?” Ashley stuck his head in the door.
“Yup,” Lyndsey said and threw a pillow at him as he came in, followed by Jacob and Dan.
“We heard the giggles and the screams. Does this have to do with a certain new couple?” Dan asked, already knowing the answer.
Erik and Trevor entered.
“Wow, this is one big happy family in here,” Trevor announced.
Everyone laughed until there was a moment of silence.
“This is perfect,” Lyndsey said, “We are all so happy. We’re all in love and the guys are all happy. This is perfect.”
(SUMMER OF AUGUST 2001)
Lyndsey walked down a long path through a 1,000-acre Country Club. She had a plain white wedding dress with beaded flowers embroidered around the waistline and hem of the dress. Her train flowed behind her as she walked through scattered roses that the flower girl had left behind. She walked up the path to meet Jacob who stood at the other end in a black tuxedo. He took her hand as they stepped towards the minister and then the ceremony took place. As soon as their marriage was official, they embraced, walked back down the pathway of roses and got into an old fashioned car. Heading for their honeymoon, they drove off into the sunset.
