Baptized with fire and Holy Ghost

Mat. 3:11 Baptize with fire and Holy Ghost.

Baptism of Holy Ghost – pour out his spirit.

Joel 2:28-29;  Prov. 1:23;

The Jews received the out pouring (Baptism of Holy Ghost) first then the Gentiles ( Rom. 1:16 & Rom 2:9-10).

Acts 2:1-18 And then the Gentiles Acts 10:43-48 & Acts 11:15-17

Was the baptism of the Holy Ghost for salvation?

John 20:22 This was the indwelling of the spirit that gives salvation (the birth of the spirit) John 3:3  The 12 were not recorded as having been baptized in Acts 2.  John 20:22 did not give them power of the Holy Ghost – to speak in tongues; to know his word divinely; nor to heal the sick ect.  But rather it gave them the indwelling of the Holy Ghost or Holy Spirit which all must have who are Christians (Romans 8:9).

God started the world with miracles, He started the Nation of Israel with  miracles, so too he started his Kingdom with  miracles.

The out pouring of the spirit did not give salvation.  Note: Ac 10:45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.

46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,

47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?

48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.  They had to be baptized for the remission of sin, (Acts 2:38) to be in Christ (Gal. 327), to be in the body (1 Cor 12:13-14), and for salvation (1 Peter 3:21).

The baptism of the Holy Ghost only happened twice in the Bible, Acts 2 and Acts 10.  First it came upon the Jews and then on the Gentiles.  Notice in Acts 2 that only the twelve Apostles received it.  Ac 1:25 That he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.

26 And they (this they refers to the Apostles) gave forth their lots; and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.

Acts chapter 2

1 ¶ And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they (the 12 Apostles) were all with one accord in one place.

2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they (the 12 Apostles) were sitting.

3 And there appeared unto them (the 12 Apostles) cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. (the Apostles)

4 And they (the 12 Apostles) were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them (the 12 Apostles) utterance

.

So, we see it was the 12 Apostles not the entire 120 that received the Baptism of the Holy Ghost.  The Baptism of the Holy Ghost gave them power, to speak in tongues, to heal, to have divine knowledge, and to be witnesses of him (Luke 24:49; Acts 1:8).

One receives the birth of the Spirit when he obeyed baptism into Jesus Christ for the remission of sin.  Ac 19:1 ¶ And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,

2 He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.

3 And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism.

4 Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.

5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

Notice in verse 3 Paul asked unto what were you baptized since you never received or heard of the Holy Ghost.  This means that receiving the Holy Spirit had something to do with baptism (water baptism).  Notice that later he laid his hands on them and they received the Holy Ghost (power).  This tells me that receiving the birth of the Holy Spirit is different from receiving the power of the Holy Ghost.  There is one baptism (Eph. 4:5).  There is the one baptism that saves which is of water ( Acts 2:38; Acts 8:35-39 & 1 Peter 3:20-21).

Therefore, we see and understand that the baptism of the Holy Ghost was not for an individual’s salvation but to give power of the Holy Spirit.

What about tongues and speaking in tongues?

The Bible says not to forbid to speak with tongues (1 Cor. 14:39).  So I cannot nor do I desire to forbid such.  But it must be done as God’s word instructs. 1Co 14:27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.

28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.  Notice that they must speak one at a time and there must be an interpreter.  Also notice that he is to speak to himself and God, if there is no interpreter.  If he speaks to himself, then he must also understand himself.  God never authorized for a man to speak or pray in a language that he could not understand (1 Cor. 14:15).

What about Acts chapter 2?  Ac 2:6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language.  Notice every man heard them speak in his own language.  It was more of a miracle on the ear than the tongue.  As one spoke each person understood in his own language, hence, the coven (split) tongue.  God did not have all these people speaking at once in different tongues that would have been confusion, and would have violated his own word in 1 Cor. 14.  Ac 2:8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born?

9 Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia,

10 Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes,

11 Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God.

According to 1 Cor. 12:8-10 & 28-31, a person does not have to speak in tongues to be saved.  The only reason that we mention this is that some teach such.  The gifts of the Holy Spirit which some received (the 12 Apostles) with the baptism of the Holy Ghost, was later parted by the laying on of the Apostles Hands. Ac 8:12 But when they believed Philip preaching the things concerning the kingdom of God, and the name of Jesus Christ, they were baptized, both men and women.

13 Then Simon himself believed also: and when he was baptized, he continued with Philip, and wondered, beholding the miracles and signs which were done.

14 ¶ Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:

15 Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:

16 (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)

17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost)

Ac 8:18 And when Simon saw that through laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money,

19 Saying, Give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost.

Notice that Phillip a man who has the power of the Holy Ghost could not pass it on but rather Peter and John came and laid their hands on those who had been baptized.  In Acts 19:6 we see the Apostle Paul imparting the Holy Ghost power by laying on of his hands after people had been baptized.  Since, none of the 12 are alive today we do not expect anyone to be able to impart theses gifts of the Holy Ghost.  Simon wanted to buy this power to impart the Holy Ghost gifts.  These things ceased when the apostles died as the scripture fore tells.

1Co 12:30 Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?

31 But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.

1Co 13:8 ¶ Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.

9 For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.

10 But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.

11 When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

13 And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.

And so we see that the time of divine inspiration has ceased, for this is God’s design.

What about the baptism of Fire?

One thing is certain, Jesus is the one to administer the baptism of fire, just as he was the one to administer the baptism of the Holy Ghost.  I think that this has to do with our death and judgment.

The fire at the end of this world … all things must go through the fire

2Th 1:8 In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ:

2Pe 3:12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?

Re 20:10 And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.

11 ¶ And I saw a great white throne, and him that sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.

12 And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works.

13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

15 And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.

Re 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

1Co 3:13 Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is.

14 If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.

15 If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.

1Pe 1:7 That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ:

1Pe 4:12 ¶ Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:
