 Old Highways

(C) 2001-2002 Robert Lee

Southern Highways :: Abandoned MS 19 between Whynot and the Alabama State Line

A long abandoned section of MS 19 remains mostly in place between Whynot and Alabama State Line. Some of the abandoned roadway lies on the right-of-way, while other parts are on private property.

The abandoned highway begins just NW of the Alabama State Line. This spot is accessible by from the 1st (or 2nd) driveway on the northbound side NW of the state line. The old road actually follows a straighter path than the current highway for the next 1/4 mile.

Some distance down, looking SE toward the above picture. (June 2002)

Further down, still looking SE. (June 2002)

Reverse angle, looking NW. The old road disappears somewhere further down, but the old alignment stays near MS 19 up to the next photo. (June 2002)

The asphalt resumes about 1 mile NW of the state line. The road is closed now and is on private property. This section was apparently the last section bypassed, considering the quality of pavement and how the old striping curves from the current highway to the old highway. (April 2002)

Looking NW from the other side of the "Road Closed" sign. Notice all of the dead vines. (April 2002)

Looking SE from the right curve in the previous picture-- after the kudzu has bloomed. (June 2002)

Further NW, still looking SE. The road is in decent shape, and could pass as a good road in some counties. (June 2002)

Turned around, looking NW. There are a couple more curves before the abandoned road comes back to MS 19. (June 2002)

The abandoned highway returns to MS 19 in front of a new house. MDOT constructed an access road to the property and removed the old highway NW from the gate. (APril 2002)

Looking SE at the house and gate. Notice the cross-section of the old roadbed left after the old road was removed. The current highway, in the foreground, was being overlayed at the time. (June 2002)

A piece of old asphalt leading to the above picture. (April 2002)

A chunk of asphalt to the right (NW) of the above picture. I'm not sure if it's part of the old highway. (April 2002).

The old highway disappears from here to Shannon Rd., about 2/10 mile. Click here to continue.
