 Old Highways

Southern Highways :: Abandoned MS 19 between Whynot and the Alabama State Line

The abandoned highway resumes at Shannon Rd., continuing NW. This section parallels the current highway and lies mostly on the right-of-way. (April 2002)

Further down. The highway is covered in pine straw. (April 2002)

At the bottom of the hill is an abandoned bridge still in place. The current highway uses a culvert to cross the stream. (June 2002)

Closeup of the bridge deck. Starting NW from here, the abandoned road straddles the right-of-way line. The property owner has fence in the middle of the old road. (April 2002)

Just NW of the bridge. Along the three driveways that cross the abandoned highway, MDOT installed "Dead End" signs on each driveway and posts and "Road Closed" signs to keep vehicles off of the abandoned highway, which runs in front of the fence by this point. (April 2002)

Looking NW at the "Road Closed" sign in the previous picture. The abandoned highway is in bad condition... (April 2002)

...very bad condition. Looking SE from the same driveway. (June 2002)

Looking at the above picture from the next driveway to the NW. Notice the wooden posts with the red reflective squares. (April 2002)

Looking at the above picture from the NW. The old road is missing a few feet of pavement to provide drainage. (April 2002)

Turned around looking NW. The abandoned highway ends here. The old road begins about 1/4 mile NW of here at Silk Stocking Lane and continues to Vimville. (April 2002)
