Before the US 82 freeway and the Tenn-Tom Waterway were built, US 45 and US 82 merged just west of Columbus. When US 82 was moved to the freeway, a new 4-lane US 45 was built to connect US 45 to the freeway. A short piece of the old US 45 was left to provide access to property owners.
