Duo Maxwell AKA Shinigami
Born in AC 180, a young American boy is orphaned at the age of four and is taken in by a gang of orphans led by a boy named Solo, who becomes his best friend.
In AC 187, a rampant virus is unleashed in the L2 colony cluster; the antidote is kept from the less 'desirable' residents of the colony. Solo contracted the virus, and the boy leads a break-in to steal the medicine for his best friend. Solo sadly dies, but before he does, he tells the boy that he will always watch over him and protect him. In a tribute to his lost friend, the boy re-names himself 'Duo'. Although Duo didn't get enough antidote for himself, he never contracted the virus, and attributes this to Solo watching over him.
After Solo's death, Duo and his gang are taken in by the Maxwell Church in AC 188, run by Father Maxwell and the kindly Sister Helen. The other children are placed in foster homes, but Duo keeps being sent back for trouble-making. It was here that he first has his hair braided (since he refused to let Sister Helen cut it off) and he decides that God did not exist, only Shinigami. His reason is that he has never seen a miracle, but he has seen plenty of dead people.
In AC 190, the Maxwell Church is captured by terrorists. They agree to leave the area if Duo is able to steal a mobile suit for them. He manages to steal one Leo suit for them, but on returning, he discovers that the church has been razed to the ground. 245 people were killed that day, including Father Maxwell and Sister Helen. Duo Maxwell, as he later named himself, is the only survivor of 'The Maxwell Church Massacre'.
After saying his goodbyes to Howard in AC 192, Professor G is alerted to a stowaway inside his ship, which belongs to the Sweeper Group. On realising that a twelve year old boy managed to get past his security systems, G is highly impressed and asks the boys' name. On hearing the name Maxwell, he asks if he has any connection to Maxwell's Demon. The boy simply replies, 'I'm no demon...I'm the God of Death!'
The final orders for Operation Meteor come through in AC 194. On hearing that the gundams would be used to terrorise Earth after the colonies were dropped on the planet, Duo attempts to destroy the Deathscythe, not being able to stomach the thought of his gundam being used for senseless killing. His plans are derailed on discovering that G had removed all the explosives from the Deathscythe's self destruct system. G tells him to steal the Deathscythe and disobey the orders for O:M. He is told that when he lands on Earth, he is to find a man named Howard, who will assist him.
Operation:Meteor starts on 7th April, the Deathscythe landing in the Pacific near the South JAP area. Finding a discarded mobile suit on the ocean floor bearing a remarkable resemblance to his, Duo decides to float it to the surface and cannibalize it for his own use. In a nearby military installation, while waiting for the gundams to surface, he intervenes between Relena Darlian amd a boy around his age trying to kill her. Shooting the Japanese boy twice, he realises that he is the pilot of the mobile suit he found. Making up for his previous error, he breaks the injured pilot out of hospital, with the boy surviving a fifty foot dive with only a broken leg. To repay him for his kindness, the pilot of the Wing Gundam steals parts from the Deathscythe to repair his own suit. After the massacre at the New Edwards base where he and the other pilots meet for the first time, he discovers the identity of the pilot; Heero Yuy.
In the aftermath of the Siberia mission, where he sees Heero apparently die in the self-destruction of the Wing, Duo teams up with Quatre and together they decide to go back to the colonies. They successfully steal the shuttles they need, but their escape is at the cost of the Sandrock. Perhaps fortunately for Duo, he discovers that Heero somehow survived self-destruction and is also returning to space. Once in space, the Deathscythe is captured by OZ's new mobile dolls and partially destroyed. Duo himself is captured and sentenced to execution. Originally intending to kill his fellow pilot, Heero breaks into the prison, but can't go through with killing Duo. He rescues him instead, paying the American back for saving his life.
His freedom comes at a price. In July AC 195, Duo is forced to watch as the Deathscythe is completely destroyed by Trowa Barton as part of a training exercise. Shortly after this, he meets a young colonial resident who is buying OZ's takeover of the colonies; Hilde Schbeiker. Duo takes advantage of the OZ recruitment process to steal a Leo and head for the moon base, trying to find the other pilots. At first Hilde attempts to stop him, but then she realises she has been duped by OZ. Choosing to help Duo reach the moon, she destroys her career in OZ.
The Deathscythe pilot reaches the moon base with about half the base trying to destroy him. before he does any damage. Trying to hide in an apparently diused lab, Duo finds instead two new gundams being built; the Altron (Shenlong's upgrade) and the Deathscythe Hell. Allowing himself to be beaten up by Master O, Duo is imprisoned along with Heero and Wufei until the new suits are ready.
Nearly getting himself killed by General Tsuberov of the Romafeller Foundation, Duo escapes the lunar prison along with Wufei; the two gundams are about 70% complete. Returning to the L2 colonies, Duo meets up with Hilde, now working in a salvage business. This provides him with cover until he is forced to be a test subject for the Zero System by Lt. Trant, a rogue OZ officer. The system nearly destroys him, and he doesn't believe anyone can ever master it. When the White Fang tries to recruit him to the organisation, Duo decides to leave the colonies and find the others. Finding Quatre and an amnesiac Trowa, the three pilots along with Capt. Noin travel to Peacemillion, the battleship designed by Howard. Heero and Wufei arrive shortly afterwards with Sally Po.
Despite Duo's warning, Hilde becomes involved in the battle between Peacemillion and Libra, successfully downloading the schematics of the White Fang battleship. Nearly getting herself killed in the process before being rescued by Duo, Hilde tells him that she risked her life because she wanted to help him. On her information, Heero travels across to Libra in order to rescue Relena. The Deathscythe pilot is not happy about this.(We wonder why....)
The final battle between the two factions ends with Heero's destruction of the remains of the Libra falling towards the Earth, and the colonies announcing that they will work alongside the World Nation. During the year of relative peace, Duo, along with Heero, Trowa and Quatre, decides to destroy the Deathscythe. The gundams are no longer needed in the time of peace. On New Year's Eve AC 196, Mariemai's Army declares war on the fledgling World Nation and the services of the gundams are needed once again.
Surviving the battle once again, Duo finally decides to destroy the Deathscythe Hell Custom along with the Sandrock Kai and the Heavyarms Kai. The last time Duo is seen in Gundam Wing is at the end of Endless Waltz, back at work in the salvage business with Hilde, who survived the Eve Wars as well.
Quotable Duo...
'How did I end up being the bad guy here?'
'Why did I even bother rescuing this guy in the first place? He's anti-social, thinks he's Evil Kneivel and hardly speaks!'
'I can't take much more of this...He just goes and puts a broken bone back into place...man, that totally grosses me out just thinking about it!'
'It's always the quiet ones who have to do things the flashiest way!'
'The God of Death is back from Hell!!!'
'Just watch me! I'll become the Great Destroyer once again! But right now...I nned some sleep.'
'You piloted that thing?! Oh yeah, I forgot; you're not normal.'
Preferred pairing
Not meaning to offend anyone, but...I hate Relena Peacecraft. Always have done, always will. Out of all the alternative pairings in GW, my favourite has to be Heero and Duo, and there is more than enough evidence to back up the theory that these two pilots may be more than just friends...
1. Duo breaks Heero out of military hospital.
2. After he busts his leg, Duo tell Heero that he's the only thing the Japanese pilot has to a friend.
3. Heero tells him to shut up for a while. For Hee-chan, this is termed endearing conversation.
4. The same day that he gets the Deathscythe pilfered for parts, Duo ends up watching the moon and thinking about Heero.
5. Before New Edmonds, Duo says that after this, he can finally go back to space. Heero looks at him for a while with shimmery eyes...
6. Duo is completely distraught after Heero self-destructs in Siberia. He regrets that Heero had to give his life to safe the colonies.
7. After being caught by OZ, Heero intends to break into the prison and kill Duo. Plan goes wrong when Duo says he's happy to die if he is killed by Heero. Hee-chan can't go through with it and rescues him instead.
8. After both landing in the same prison on the moon, Duo tries to prevent Heero from going out to find Quatre.
9. In the flashback episodes, Heero says that there are two people whom he cares for; Relena Peacecraft (Ick.) and Duo Maxwell.
10. After he arrives on Peacemillion, the only one Heero talks to is Duo, who flips when he finds out Heero has mastered the Zero System.
11. After finding out Heero has left to rescue Relena, Duo sulks for a remarkable amount of time. Even the other pilots suggest he is being stupid. Hmmmm.....
And the most obvious evidence of 1x2 goodness...
12. Duo managed to piss Relena off in just two episodes. There is a God...

you can too, as long as you believe that heero is not toast! |
