Hold on Tight

fan fiction for The Sentinel by: Michelle Gussow

This scene could take place at any one of the times Blair had to be taken to the hospital.

Jim had cradled Blair's head in his lap while waiting for the paramedics to arrive. He had ridden in the ambulance with him refusing to break physical contact, if only by keeping a hand on his leg.

Arriving at the emergency entrance of Cascade Hospital Jim helped lower the gurney from the transport vehicle and holding Blair's hand walked along side through the automatic doors and to the treatment room that had been indicated.

Outside the door Jim was told what he knew: they would have to take Blair from him and he would have to wait. Stroking Sandburg's hair with his free hand he leaned close and whispered, "I have to let you go now. But, I'll be right outside this door." Then he added, "Listening."

Blair nodded, a look of uncertainty in his eyes.

Jim straightened bringing Blair's hand to his own face and pressed a kiss into the palm. Then lowering Blair's hand to the gurney he folded his fingers closing them around where his lips had touched.

Sandburg was then whisked into the room, the door closing immediately.

Jim leaned against the wall and dialed up his hearing. He could hear medical staffing fussing and rushing about, taking vitals etc... Then something caught his sentinel ear.

"Let's get the pulse-ox on him."

"He's got something in his hand. Can't pry his fingers open."

Another voice: "Whatever it is he's got a death grip on it."

"Use the other hand."

"Whatever he's got. It must be real important."

Outside the room Jim just smiled and shook his head.
