LIBERTY
BAPTIST CHURCH HISTORY
The
Liberty Baptist Church was organized in the early 1930’s.
After a split from Liberty Street Church, a few members decided to move
to a small building on Firebaught.
The
first pastor is believed to have been Reverend J. W Grant.
Rev. Grant’s pastorship ended with the calling of Reverend Willie
Jones, Sr. In 1938, Rev Jones encouraged the member to buy some land and build a
church. Some of the first members were: Sister Clara Gordon, Annie Helem Hattie
Brent, Louise Sims, Mandy Rogers; Deacons Johnny Nichols, Barnsby Sims and
Brother Robert Stewart.
After
many years of hard work and struggling, the building was paid for completely in
1943. Years later Rev Jones’s health failed~ so his son Reverend Q. L Jones
carried out his duties as pastor.
When
Rev. Q. L. Jones left in 1963, Reverend L C Day was called as pastor. Under Rev.
Day’s pastorage, the following were added to the church: a kitchen, fellowship
hall, pastor study, pool for baptism, air conditioning and the purchase of a
van. Rev. Day served until his death on February 10, 1983.
On
April 17, 1983, Reverend Isiac Jackson, Jr. became the church’s new leader.
Under Rev. Jackson’s leadership, a new van and more land was purchased.
On July 14, 1991, the congregation marched from the old church to the new (two story) church now located at 815 West Fulton Street. Some of the early officers are Deacons Albert Johnson, Nathaniel Malone and Sam Sanders.
