There are many ways to search for specific information on the Internet. Search Page: keyword searches, subject searches, indexes and abstracts (some restricted to UT), libraries, universities/colleges, email addresses, FTP searches, WAIS searches, Telnet searches, and listserv/newsgroup searches.
Yahoo -- Yahoo! contains organized information on tens of thousands of computers linked to the Web. The San Jose Mercury news recently noted that "Yahoo is closest in spirit to the work of Linnaeus, the 18th century botanist whose classification system organized the natural world."
Alta Vista -- ALTAVISTA is the result of a research project started in the summer of 1995 at Digital's Research Laboratories in Palo Alto, California. By combining a fast Web crawler with scalable indexing software, we were able to build a large index of the Web in the Fall of 1995.
Argus Clearinghouse -- The Internet's premier research library: sites are rated and ranked by research librarians.
Web Crawler -- WebCrawler employs advanced search and retrieval technology from Personal Library Software (PLS) so that even novice users will get the results they want. WebCrawler is programmed to "do the right thing" even when your searches are described in a less than expert way. Lycos -- Lycos, Point, and A2Z are a trio of stars in the same information universe, as Carl Sagan might say. Lycos provides searches of the entire Internet, Point offers reviews and ratings of the top 5% of all Internet sites, and A2Z is a new service offering a categorized directory of the Net's most often hyperlinked sites. All three sites are operated by Lycos, Incorporated.
Infoseek -- Infoseek's search and news services are among the most popular information search services available on the Internet, processing millions of information requests a day. Infoseek is increasingly becoming the first stop on the Internet.
Excite Search -- Excite's primary goal is to raise users' expectations of information retrieval. We believe that our information retrieval tools mark a significant advance in both sophistication and ease-of-use. Excite, formerly known as Architext, was founded in September 1993 by six Stanford University graduates who were tired of making keyword searches.
Open Text's Index -- Open Text Corporation is a public company (NASDAQ: OTEXF) headquartered in Waterloo, near Toronto, Canada. The company was founded in 1991. Its U.S. operations are headquartered in Bannockburn, Illinois and its European operations in St. Gallen, Switzerland. The firm employs approximately 200 employees worldwide. The firm went public in January 1996.
