janet kosnik My GR CH Domee sired a nice litter in July 99. I kept a male pup, Black and a female, Spirit. Theyre 8 months old and Im happy with what I see in them. Theyre smart, learn fast, have good noses and mouths, and going to be good-looking hounds, besides. Theyve done a good job on the few coon drags Ive laid for them, taking the scent all the way to the tree. Im in the process of trying to live trap a coon. But its winter here in Montana and coon should just start to move this month. Its hard to get a black pup to tree hard on a dead frozen coon. It just isnt the same as a live coon thats hissing and spitting at them. Ive started Black and Spirit in a puppy obedience class. I find it very helpful, not only in the show ring but also in the woods. A hound that comes when called, within reason, makes a much more enjoyable one to hunt with. Obedience class is also a good way to bond with a young dog. My two pups sure look forward to their daily training sessions cause they know theyll get praise and rewards/treats when they do well. Its the same principal behind coon training. Make it enjoyable and get that pup excited about the caged coon and give him/her praise and plenty of it when he/she does well. Itll be interesting to see how the first generation of Domees offspring turns out. Theres plenty of good hunting hounds in their pedigree, so I have no doubt that these pups will have a good chance at being some good coondogs and maybe more. Ill keep you all updated on the pups progress in the woods and on the bench. Our first show/nite hunt here in Montana will be at the end of April, just before we pack up and travel to Black and Tan Days all the way back east in Ohio. Itll be a good practice run for the pups on the bench and to be around other hounds/owners. DOMEE (SIRE) AND SPIRIT BLACK (8 MONTHS) |
