2.8.2 Update Info:

Since early 2005, we no longer can use any buttons to retro-grade from the 2.9.1 updates, to the 2.8.2. We must manually input the trick URL into our 'goto' box.



(best to start this procedure with an empty cache; #1 does this for you)



1) Power-off, and then power-up again.

2) From the HomePage, press 'GoTo'.

3) Erase/Delete the 'http://'

4) Type/Input the following exactly:

          wtv-tricks:get-2.8.2

5) Press/Click the 'return' key, or the 'go to page'.

6) You should now be presented with the update page and procedure.

7) If you are presented with an error, like "image can not be found", try steps 2-5 again. (be sure you input the trick URL exactly as shown). Repeat 2 more times if necessary. (most errors that people incur, is that they are typing the URL incorrectly).

8) If things still will not work, then you may be in the catagory of a very few people who are on a certain server that no longer has the 2.8.2 update on it. You can try this little trick to try to force your box on another server:


On the 'options' bar, click 'hang-up'; this will hopefully force your box onto another server when you click 'reconnect'. Now try the trick code again.


If that doesn't work, then you should try getting the 2.7 update first; that will usually put you on a different server. With the 2.7 on your box, try the trick code in the 'goto' box to get the 2.8.2


If even that doesn't work, try a different time or a different connecting number from each update, so that you will hopefully get a different server that will allow the 2.8.2 download/transfer. (in other words, try all combinations of my suggestions until you get the 2.8.2 to successfully download)

9) Depending on the server that you started with, you may or may not end up with having the 'nag' screens continually bug you to take an update! There is a 'no-upgrade' server that when on it, NEVER gives you that 'nag' screen. In the past, we could be put on that 'no-upgrade' server. We could still take update/upgrades, but we had to actually want one before being given one.


You can still be put on the 'no-grade' server, but....... it is pretty frustrating for a lot of folks. You have to call WebTV, AND..... get a CSR who will actually put you on that 'no-upgrade' server. All CSRs are taught to deny the existence of that server, and that there is no longer any way to be put on it even if it existed. If confronted with a CSR such as that, keep calling back, (hours or days later), until you find an accomodating CSR! Once they put you on the 'no-upgrade' server, just power off. From then on, when you connect, NO 'nag' screen........

Before or after an update, you can be sure which "update/upgrade/client-build" your box is currently running:



1) Power-off

2) Press 'options' key, three times.

3) Type 411
(you can not see what you type of course).

4) Power-up

5) Your box 'tech' screen comes up, and shows all the technical information on your particular box.
(do not give the I.D. info to anyone other than an official WebTV tech person).
