The Distance to Here (1999)

Interpretations-

Live has always been a straightforward band, never shying away from songs delivering powerful emotional messages. Musicians and music fans respect Live for their unique, modern rock sound, but also for their dedication to creating deep, thought provoking pieces of music. Live’s abilities to produce such music has been virtually unparalleled by any other modern artists. Unlike their counterparts, Live refuses to pander to the short attention spans of popular listeners. The recent mainstream success of Live’s albums have not hindered their style, though. Here, I have compiled all of Live’s songs from their studio albums, and wrote a short synopsis of what the song means to me. Keep in mind: the true beauty of music is finding your own meanings. Therefore, a song can have many meanings, depending on one’s opinion. I would ask that you respect my opinions of the songs. If you have any comments or questions, feel free to leave a message or correction on the bulletin board.

The Distance to Here (1999)

Dolphin’s Cry-
A song about the power of love to lead to peace.

The Distance-
The distance is the journey that we all must undertake. The song is about the direct correlation between humans and a higher power.

Sparkle-
This song suggests that all people try to overcome the world’s problems with love. The song states that now is the time to gather together. There’s no need to wait for a message or a miracle; it’s our world and our problems.

Run to the Water-
This one is about the quest to find love. Life is just a dream when we are unaware, but when our questions are answered, it is then that we are awakened.

Sun-
The sun is used as a metaphor for enlightenment. The song states that the world will take a course beyond one person’s control. Instead of trying to control it, we should appreciate the beauty of the world, as well as the beauty of others.

Voodoo Lady-
This song’s about letting go of inhibition.

Where Fishes Go-
The song is about remaining in darkness intentionally, never going into light. The song is a metaphor for final judgement. Living an entire lifetime without love is equated with living a life under water without trying to breath.

Face and Ghost (Children’s Song)-
This seems to be a song about the innocence of children.

Feel the Quiet River Rage-
A river is a quiet, yet powerful force. A river is just like emotion. It can be peaceful and serene, but also raging.

Meltdown-
Meltdown conjures up feelings of coldness to describe spiritual ignorance. Fire is used to counter the cold.

They Stood Up For Love-
A joyful sound is layered over contemplative lyrics in this traditionally structured song. The song describes the human story as a “forward and backward” tale. Lives are spent looking back to the mysterious beginning, and looking forward to the unknown end. The only true glory of life is love. The song pays homage to those who let love overcome all odds. A reference to “everything being light” is also made. This is a way of saying that everything is never-ending, despite creation and destruction. Light is a mysterious and infinite thing, which is above our comprehension.

Walk in the Dream-
What once was thought to be only a dream can, in fact, be reality. This is clearly a song of hope.

Dance with You-
This is easily one of Live's finest ballads, carrying on a tradition of deep, emotional expressions of love. This song conjures imagery of lush, secluded beaches. Ed does a marvelous job of setting the romantic scene through his descriptive lyrics. The best line probably written by a human: "the stillness in your eyes convinces me that I don't know a thing and I've been around the world." If that doesn't say it all, I don't know what does.
