THE MEANING AND SOURCE OF THE HITCHMAN NAME

The Hitchman name originated in England. Several branches of the Hitchman name occur in various places. The 'Man' portion is derived from being a servant or 'man of'. Evidently the original Hitchman was a servant or man of a person named Hitch thus becoming HITCHMAN.

There seem to be two branches of the Hitchman family which emigrated from England to North America. The first was in the 1600s. This family landed on the East Coast and most of the descendants remain in that area.

The second arrived in the 1860s and lived in the Dakota Territories. They later removed to Sioux City, IA and into Oregon. Most of the descendants of the portion which removed to Oregon still live in that area.

Hopefully, through this means, we will be able to determine a pattern and link all of these Hitchmans into one family tree.

If you have a web page, please send us the URL so that we can link your branch. Your comments about the Hitchman name will add to our research. Stories about the Hitchmans are more than welcome and we look forward to hearing from all of you.
