Joyce Elaine Buta, Ill With Brain Ailment, Expires During Operation.

Joyce Elaine Buta, nine-year old daughter of Mrs. Sarah Rose Buta, 314 Stone street, died suddenly about 5:30 Tuesday afternoon on an operating table in the Memorial hospital of Syracuse as a surgeon was completing a lengthy operation for a serious brain ailment.

Her death was attributed to a ruptured blood vessel tumor in the base of the brain, for which she was being operated. The child was on the operating table for five hours and the operation, performed for the removal of the tumor, was nearly finished when she died.

The girl, who had been in her usual good health, was suddenly stricken ill early on the morning of Dec. 7, apparently while in her sleep. She was as active as usual the night before, when she took her regular tap and acrobatic dancing lession from her instructor, James King. There was no sign of any illness when she retired to bed that night.

During the early morning hours Dec. 7, her eleven-year-old sister, Glenda R. Buta, heard her moan and cry. She became nauseated and then shortly afterward fell asleep again.

Later in the morning, she was assisted downstairs and a doctor was summoned. She could not be fully aroused. She was removed to the Mercy hospital, in a semi-conscious state.

At the time, the girl's illness was believed to be a subarachnoid hemorrhage caused by a vascular congenital anomaly- a condition in which the flow of blood in the vessels of the brain is contrary to the natural or normal order. The abnormal condition, doctors explained, causes a ruptured blood vessel in the brain.

The girl was transferred by ambulance to the Syracuse hospital the same day. There Dr. A. D. Ecker, Syracuse brain specialist, took over the case. After an X-ray examination, it was found the girl was suffering from the ruptured blood vessel turmor and an operation was decided upon.

The child was unconscious four days after she first became ill, but recently, regained full consciousness. She was born in this city, Jan. 19, 1941, a daughter of Joseph and Sarah Rose Hitchman Buta. She was a student in the fourth grade of the Arsenal street school and was a member of Brownie scouts.

She had been studying dancing for about a year.
