James Carter began training under the great Sephiroth at an early age. He grew strong in the dark arts and proficient with a duplicate of the mighty Masamune. Sephiroth taught the young man a variety of powerful Limit Breaks and Materia techniques, and instilled in his pupil a desire for world dominion.
At the age of 11, James could learn no more from sephiroth, and they became friends intsead of student and master. James began to imitate the strong general of SOLDIER, and started wearing his hair like that of his mentor, and he only deviated in the slight way of cinching it at his shoulders with a thin band of silver. The resemblance between the two was striking, and often people mistook them for father and son.
When James was 11. sephiroth dissapeared, and did not surface again until he was 14. Soon the great warrior was dead at the hands of Cloud Strife, but James' grief at his loss was assauged by his recently-found friend, Gillian (Julia to her friends) . She , too, was saddened at Sephiroth's death, for she had at one time found him handsome, but now she was attracted to the new President of Shin-Ra, Rufus.
Julia used the bokken , a wooded sword used in sword training. It ordinarily would do very little damage, but in Julia's skilled hands was almost as deadly as James' Masamune.
When James was 16, he adopted a mode of dress that reminded those who saw him of the fallen Sephiroth. He wore pants of baggy black denim with grey stitching and silver buttons and rivets, a sweater of baggy black fleece, knee-high boots of black leather, a belt of silver links and an ankh for a buckle, and a hooded cloak of black cloth. For decoration he wore two necklaces, both of silver. One was an ankh, the other a shard of spindle-cut onyx held in silver dragon claws. A digital watch on a black leather strap was on his left wrist, and on the third finger of his right hand he wore a silver ring with a shard of Ice Materia set into it that Julia gave him for his 16th birthday. On his belt hung a small titanium dagger. The hilt of this weapon suggested that it came from Wutai, as it was wrapped in black leather thongs. A Restore Materia was held at the end of the grip, as a pommel. Set into the steel handguard were a Lightning Materia linked to an All, and a Fire Materia.
In return for the silver ring, James gave Julia a silver necklace that had three claw slashes inlaid of Magic Materia.
James and Julia were social outcasts, and were frequently teased and insulted. They especially made fun of Julia, mocking her faint accent. Julia's long hair often caught on a corner of her mouth, and this caused some to say she had a beard. One day, someone accused Julia of causing the Wutai War. Finally, a tidal wave of anger and hate erupted, and Julia rushed at her tormentor, pushed him against a wall, punched him in the face and chest, and dropped him. While he lay on the ground gasping for air, she jumped on his groin. After this, only the very foolish taunted the two, fearing disfigurement, crippling, of sterility.
