HAVING PROBLEMS FINDING OLD IMAGES?
NOTE: Because the Central Weather Bureau changes their links so often, it is unlikely that any of the "View data here" links on this page will work. It is equally unlikely that I will be able to fix these broken links one by one. Sorry about that! However, you might be able to locate the reports for yourself here by simply using the dropdown menus in the top frame of that page to choose the year and month, then following the links below the seismicity map which should appear in the bottom frame.
THERE WERE A TOTAL OF 136 (and two-halves?) QUAKES (more than 11 per month) IN TAIWAN DEEMED WORTHY OF BEING REPORTED BY THE CWB IN THE YEAR 2001 -- (27 OF THOSE [more than one in five] HAVING A MAGNITUDE OF 5.0 OR GREATER, 3 OF THOSE HAVING A MAGNITUDE OF 6.0 OR GREATER).
Below is the list (in reverse order) of all quakes reported in the Taiwan region by the Central Weather Bureau in the year 2001. Quakes whose magnitude is 5.0 or greater are highlighted in light green. Quakes whose magnitude is 6.0 or greater are highlighted in yellow.
(MT) Saturday, December 29, 2001, 2:22 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - Yesterday morning was only the first of two quakes to be felt in Taiwan yesterday. This one struck Taichung County yesterday evening:
Friday, 6:40 PM, 51.6 km SE of Miaoli, magnitude 4.6, depth 5.7 km. View data here.
(MT) Friday, December 28, 2001, 4:28 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - This morning brought another large offshore quake near the site of the quakes which occurred on December 18 and 22:
8:41 AM, 125.3 km east of Hualien, magnitude 5.9, depth 36.7 km. View data here.
(MT) Thursday, December 27, 2001, 4:53 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - I felt this quake, though the CWB's seismographic sensors in my region did not:
4:34 PM, 11.6 km WSW of Taitung, magnitude 5.2, depth 1.2 km. View data here.
(MT) Saturday, December 22, 2001, 2:02 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - Another large quake way off the coast of Hualien (just short of the edge of the CWB's seismicity map this time) was detected early this morning by seismometers only in the far northeastern corner of Taiwan:
5:40 AM, 128.6 km east of Hualien, magnitude 5.7, depth 31.5 km. View data here.
(MT) Tuesday, December 18, 2001, 2:02 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - A large quake way off the coast of Hualien (just past the edge of the CWB's seismicity map, in fact) was supposedly felt in every part of Taiwan (except where I was sitting?) -- even as far from the epicenter as Makung (in Penghu, off the west coast of Taiwan). People in Taipei (who tend to exaggerate?) said it shook them rather violently, knocking ornaments off of Christmas trees. The seismicity map is impressive. Here are the details:
12:02 (and 59.6 seconds) PM, 146.5 km east of Hualien, magnitude 6.7, depth 32.2 km. View data here.
(MT) Sunday, December 16, 2001, 7:44 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - This quake occurred off the coast of Ilan this morning:
9:05 (and 9.5 seconds) AM, 71.3 km ESE of Ilan, magnitude 5.3, depth 71.7 km. View data here.
(MT) Wednesday, December 12, 2001, 2:03 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - Yet more seismic activity from eastern Taiwan:
Tuesday, 7:00 PM, 31.6 km NNW of Taitung, magnitude 4.3, depth 12 km. View data here.
(MT) Monday, December 10, 2001, 10:26 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - Two quakes have occurred since the last report:
Sunday, 8:42 PM, 57.3 km SSE of Hualien, magnitude 4.6, depth 32.5 km. View data here.
Monday, 4:24 PM, 32.9 km WNW of Taitung, magnitude 4.5, depth 3.1 km. View data here.
(MT) Saturday, December 8, 2001, 3:43 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - Two quakes were reported yesterday, but the information attached to the second of these looks a little questionable (quake number 000?):
Friday, 4:07 PM, 46.8 km SSW of Yushan, magnitude 4.6, depth 3 km. View data here.
Friday, 7:59 PM, 6.4 km NNE of Hualien, magnitude 3.9, depth 26 km. View data here.
(MT) Thursday, December 6, 2001, 4:49 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - The first quake reported this month occurred off the coast of Ilan early this morning:
2:44 AM, 40.6 km SSE of Ilan, magnitude 4.5, depth 20.3 km. View data here.
(MT) Sunday, November 25, 2001, 9:16 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - This quake near Chiayi yesterday afternoon was reported late last night on the TV news:
Saturday, 4:15 PM, 9.1 km SW of Chiayi, magnitude 4.1, depth 14.9 km. View data here.

(MT) Sunday, November 4, 2001, 6:13 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - A decent-sized quake was detected by seismographs all over central Taiwan about 90 minutes ago:
4:45 PM, 44.3 km ESE of Taichung (very close to Sun Moon Lake, actually), magnitude 5.1, depth 5.9 km. View data here.
(*Note: as of November 14, the reports of this quake were missing from both the English and Chinese versions of the CWB website.)
(MT) Thursday, November 1, 2001, 1:55 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - A small quake occurred in the Nantou-Chiayi-Yunlin area this morning:

(MT) Saturday, October 13, 2001, 3:37 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - Two quakes were reported today and yesterday:
Friday, 4:28 PM, 34.9 km north of Yushan (Jade Mountain), but actually much closer to SUN MOON LAKE, magnitude 4.3, depth 4 km. View data here.
Saturday, 8:58 AM, 30.8 km SW of Hualien, magnitude 4.0, depth 17.7 km. View data here.
(MT) Wednesday, October 10, 2001, 3:36 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - One report of seismic activity has already made its way onto TV news:
11:30 AM, 40.5 km north of Hualien (actually just a few km west of Ilan), magnitude 4.1, depth 21.3 km. View data here.
(MT) Sunday, October 7, 2001, 3:45 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - A quake occurred in southeast Taiwan last night:
Saturday, 9:48 PM, 28 km SSE of Yushan (Jade Mountain), magnitude 4.1, depth 9.1 km. View data here.
(MT) Thursday, October 4, 2001, 3:42 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - A small quake near Hualien was reported by the CWB this morning:

(MT) Thursday, September 27, 2001, 1:22 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - While Taiwan was busy preparing for another typhoon with a very strange path (Lekima), this tremor struck Hualien early this morning:
12:18 AM, 14.4 km NNW of Hualien, magnitude 4.3, depth 19.6 km. View data here.
(MT) Wednesday, September 26, 2001, 12:59 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - A quake occurred north of Sun Moon Lake yesterday afternoon. This time, its location was reported in relation to Taichung. Ain't it funny how the Chinese data gives its location relative to Yuchih (sp? Translation: Fish Pond) -- a place in Nantou County only 22.6 km away? Here are the basics extracted from the English language data provided by the CWB:
Tuesday, 4:37 PM, 44.3 km ESE of Taichung, magnitude 4.1, depth 3 km. View data here.
(MT) Monday, September 24, 2001, 1:05 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - Over the weekend two quakes escaped my attention:
Saturday, 3:02 PM, 31.2 km SE of Chiayi, magnitude 4.5, depth 3 km. View data here.
Sunday, 9:01 AM, 18.3 km NNE of Hualien, magnitude 4.0, depth 12 km. View data here.
(MT) Wednesday, September 19, 2001, 1:40 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - More seismic activity from the Chiayi area:
5:46 AM, 18.6 km NE of Chiayi, magnitude 4.3, depth 5 km. View data here.
(MT) Tuesday, September 18, 2001, 9:07 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - In addition to being ravaged by Typhoon Nari -- dubbed the "weirdest typhoon" in Taiwan's history -- two quakes struck the island today. If you check the graphic link on the second listing below, you'll see that in the interest of tourism, the people at the CWB are still reporting quakes which occur near Sun Moon Lake according to their distance from Yushan (Jade Mountain). The Chinese-language graphic gives the quake's location in relation to a seismic station less than half the distance away. Here are the details:
6:44 AM, 33.1 km SE of Chiayi, magnitude 5.4, depth 3.2 km. View data here.
4:33 PM, 48.3 km NNW of Yushan, magnitude 4.1, depth 21.7 km. View data in English here or in Chinese here.
(MT) Sunday, September 16, 2001, 5:20 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - Taiwan's 100th quake of the year occurred yesterday evening close to Sun Moon Lake. As usual, the idiots at the Central Weather Bureau report its location in relation to Yushan:
Saturday, 6:05 PM, 39.4 km NNW of Yushan (Jade Mountain), magnitude 4.1, depth 2.5 km. View data here.
(MT) Thursday, September 13, 2001, 11:55 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - Three quakes -- one of those a 5.1 -- hit Taiwan while I was watching the news for the last 48 hours or so about the terrorist attacks on the U.S. None of the quakes seemed as important, but I've got to get away from the TV sometime:
Tuesday, 4:38 PM, 30.6 km NNE of Hualien, magnitude 5.1, depth 10.4 km. View data here.
Wednesday, 9:11 AM, 27.2 km NNE of Hualien, magnitude 4.0, depth 5 km. View data here.
Wednesday, 9:52 AM, 14 km NW of Hualien, magnitude 4.7, depth 18.4 km. View data here.
In other quake-related news, the collapse of the towers at New York's World Trade Center created seismic activity equivalent to a magnitude 2.0 quake while the plane strikes were measured by seismometers at 0.8. Read the CNN story here.
As I was typing this, the local Chinese-language TV news (I can still hear it from the next room) was reporting (read "advertising") a portable "earthquake shelter" designed by a Taiwanese entrepreneur. It was a ventilated wood and steel box with lights on the outside and a padded interior. It was "tested" (yes, I am using a lot of quotation marks and parentheses) by dropping a gravel truck onto it. While it survived the test (seems safer than being hit while on a scooter), I would seriously doubt its effectiveness in real-life earthquake conditions. What also caught my attention was the price -- a cool NT$500,000 - 600,000 -- the price of an average non-Benz automobile in Taiwan. At the current exchange rate of NT$34.5440 to US$1, that's a hefty US$14,474.29 - 17,369.15! From its appearance, it'd make a nice bar. A damn expensive one.
(MT) Tuesday, September 11, 2001, 2:12 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - While yesterday's 4.2 quake in Los Angeles made news around the world, Taiwan has already had 3 quakes at least that strong since the beginning of September. Here's the latest:
8:31 AM, 9.1 km NNE of Hualien, magnitude 4.6, depth 24.9 km. View data here.
(MT) Monday, September 10, 2001, 11:37 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - Two more quakes hit northeastern Taiwan yesterday morning:
Sunday, 7:30 AM, 40.9 km NNE of Hualien (near Ilan), magnitude 4.2, depth 16.5 km. View data here.
Sunday, 9:41 AM, 39.4 km NNE of Hualien, magnitude 4.0, depth 12.3 km. View data here.
(MT) Tuesday, September 4, 2001, 10:15 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - I could swear Taichung's seismograph's are broken. While I felt something this afternoon I would've gauged as about a 4 occurring directly beneath me, not even the Central Weather Bureau's realtime reports showed anything except a 2 in Miaoli County. Hualien, however, did experience a quake which was detected by the CWB:
5:57 PM, 30.3 km NW of Hualien, magnitude 4.3, depth 8.4 km. View data here.
(MT) Monday, September 3, 2001, 3:13 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - While I was stranded in the offline world without a connection to the Internet, 4 quakes -- two of these having magnitudes smaller than the 4.0 criteria normally posted by the CWB -- occurred in almost the exact location just off the Hualien coast:
Friday, August 31, 7:33 PM, 18.2 km NNE of Hualien, magnitude 4.5, depth 8.1 km. View data here.
Friday, August 31, 11:29 PM, 20 km NNE of Hualien, magnitude 4.0, depth 7.1 km. View data here.
Sunday, September 2, 12:07 PM, 19.9 km NNE of Hualien, magnitude 3.9, depth 12.7 km. View data here.
Monday, September 3, 8:08 AM, 17.7 km NNE of Hualien, magnitude 3.7, depth 11.8 km. View data here.
(MT) Friday, August 31, 2001, 2:54 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - A quake in Hualien was felt in a small area along the eastern coast of Taiwan last night:
Thursday, 9:57 PM, 30.6 km NW of Hualien, magnitude 4.5, depth 42.8 km. View data here.
(MT) Tuesday, August 21, 2001, 3:20 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - A tremor in Hualien early this morning shook me here on the other side of the island:
12:58 AM, 8 km NNE of Hualien, magnitude 4.8, depth 17.7 km. View data here.
(MT) Sunday, August 19, 2001, 5:13 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - A small offshore quake near Lanyu (Orchid Island) occurred this morning. On the island of Taiwan itself, the quake was only felt in the Taitung area:
9:58 AM, 33.7 km north of Lanyu, magnitude 4.4, depth 15.2 km. View data here.
(MT) Saturday, August 11, 2001, 4:32 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - A quake this morning was detected by seismographs over a large portion of the island:
9:02 AM, 30.3 km WNW of Chengkung, magnitude 4.4, depth 8.7 km. View data here.
(MT) Wednesday, August 8, 2001, 2:45 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - This quake shook my bed back and forth pretty forcefully this morning:
1:27 AM, 30 km east of Taichung, magnitude 4.4, depth 31 km. View data here.
(MT) Monday, July 30, 2001, 3:16 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - While Taiwan was enduring a beating from Typhoon Toraji, this quake occurred off the northeastern coast this morning:
11:59 AM, 41.3 km NE of Hualien, magnitude 4.9, depth 23.6 km. View data here.
(MT) Thursday, July 26, 2001, 2:59 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - This quake was felt by seismographs across the northern half of Taiwan this morning:
10:19 AM, 17.6 km NNW of Hualien, magnitude 4.6, depth 15.1 km. View data here.
(MT) Monday, July 23, 2001, 10:00 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - I saw this quake reported on TV before I found the online report which also posted the same silly information which demonstrates that "cha4 bu0 duo1" is good enough:
8:15 PM, 37 km east of Yushan (Jade Mountain), magnitude 4.9, depth 10.9 km. View data here.
The "nearly correct" information which was reported is that while the quake was 4.9 in magnitude, its "largest local intensity" was listed as being "5" in Hualien. Duh!
(MT) Sunday, July 22, 2001, 4:02 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - This quake occurred early yesterday afternoon near Miaoli:
Saturday, 12:37 PM, 28.5 km SE of Miaoli, magnitude 4.2, depth 8.7 km. View data here.
(MT) Monday, July 16, 2001, 4:43 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - This afternoon's quake report:
3:20 PM, 6.3 km WNW of Yushan (Jade Mountain), magnitude 4.3, depth 3.5 km. View data here.
(MT) Sunday, July 15, 2001, 11:26 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - A tremor occurred in Kaohsiung County this morning:
10:07 AM, 36.8 km east of Tainan, magnitude 4.9, depth 15.3 km. View data here.
(MT) Sunday, July 15, 2001, 12:40 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - Two quakes occurred since the last report:
Friday, 7:33 PM, 22.3 km SE of Miaoli, magnitude 4.6, depth 3 km. View data here.
Saturday, 9:04 PM, 36 km south of Yushan (Jade Mountain), magnitude 4.3, depth 11.3 km. View data here.
(MT) Tuesday, July 10, 2001, 3:16 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - This quake occurred just off the coast of Hualien late last night:
Monday, 11:20 PM, 18 km NNE of Hualien, magnitude 5.2, depth 32.6 km. View data here.
(MT) Monday, July 2, 2001, 2:50 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - Being out of town, I wasn't able to post 2 quakes which occurred last Friday. Another one which occurred today is included below:
Friday, June 29, 6:41 AM, 13 km ESE of Hualien, magnitude 5.2, depth 46.6 km. View data here.
Friday, June 29, 12:07 PM, 14.8 km NNW of Hualien, magnitude 5.2, depth 18.7 km. View data here.
Monday, July 1, 1:13 AM, 32.1 km SSE of Yushan (Jade Mountain), magnitude 4.9, depth 35.9 km. View data here.
(MT) Friday, June 29, 2001, 1:29 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - A quake near Chiayi late Thursday evening was felt in at least 5 counties:
Thursday, 8:14 PM, 15.4 km NE of Chiayi, magnitude 4.1, depth 11.8 km. View data here.
(MT) Thursday, June 28, 2001, 2:40 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - Another early morning quake shook Taiwan today -- this time in Hsinchu County:
3:47 AM, 37.9 km ESE of Chupei, magnitude 4.2, depth 8.6 km. View data here.
(MT) Wednesday, June 27, 2001, 3:33 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - Not nearly as big as this week's Peruvian quake, but not small either, a seismic event shook Pingtung County and a good portion of southern Taiwan early this morning:
2:46 AM, 44.4 km west of Taitung, magnitude 5.0, depth 22.5 km. View data here.
(MT) Sunday, June 24, 2001, 4:58 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - Two quakes were reported on the Taiwan Central Weather Bureau's English website. One of these had questionable info associated with it. According to the Chinese version of the website, there was only one quake. Here are the stats:
1:59 AM, 4.4 km NW of Hualien, magnitude 4.0, depth 10.8 km. View data here.
(MT) Tuesday, June 19, 2001, 2:42 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - Three earthquakes rocked most of Taiwan within a half hour period just a short time ago:
1:16 PM, 32.8 km WNW of Chengkung, magnitude 5.2, depth 3 km. View data here.
1:34 PM, 28.3 km SSE of Yushan (Jade Mountain), magnitude 4.4, depth 6.6 km. View data here.
1:43 PM, 31.3 km SSE of Yushan, magnitude 5.3, depth 3 km. View data here.
(MT) Monday, June 18, 2001, 1:52 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - In the latest bungle by the CWB, an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4 was reported off the coast of Taichung followed a minute later by another with a magnitude of 4.1. Not only did both links lead to the same image, but the image also showed that this sizeable quake was felt as a 3 in Hualien but was imperceptible in Taichung. Things that make ya go "Hmmm." (Note: A day later, the information has been corrected):
6:42 AM, 17.9 km WNW of Hualien, magnitude 4.1, depth 14.7 km. View data here.
(MT) Friday, June 15, 2001, 3:38 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - Early this morning, far from the area where yesterday's 5 quakes were located, this seismic activity occurred:
5:47 AM, 31.5 km NW of Yushan (Jade Mountain), magnitude 4.3, depth 14.8 km. View data here.
(MT) Thursday, June 14, 2001, 11:37 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - Four more quakes (including one "ghost" report) were posted by the CWB since what everybody's been calling the "614 Quake" occurred this morning:
2:24 PM, 48.7 km SSE of Ilan, magnitude 4.3, depth 2.5 km. View data here.
6:40 PM, 35.1 km SSE of Ilan, magnitude 4.1, depth 14 km. View data here.
6:44 PM, 33.8 km SSE of Ilan, magnitude 3.9, depth 11.9 km. View data here.
7:05 PM, 36.2 km SSE of Ilan, magnitude 4.5, depth 17.1 km. View data here.
(MT) Thursday, June 14, 2001, 1:44 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - The CWB was most likely lying to the public yesterday by saying that aftershocks from yesterday's quake were unlikely due to the depth of the tremor. In fact, a quake almost as strong, only a fifth as deep, and a good bit closer to shore occurred this morning. Its effect was felt more strongly on land and was spread over a larger area. I think the "experts" at the CWB were lying again when they said these two quakes were unrelated. An article in the South China Morning Post says that an abandoned brick building in Taipei partly collapsed due to this morning's quake, cracks appeared in the walls of other buildings, and the public transportation system was temporarily shut down to perform safety checks. TV news footage also showed damage to the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall in downtown Taipei and reported at least 5 injuries that occurred as a result of the quake. Here are the CWB's stats on today's quake:
10:35 AM, 39.7 km SSE of Ilan, magnitude 6.2, depth 10.4 km. View data here.
(MT) Wednesday, June 13, 2001, 11:25 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - A large, deep offshore quake shook most of Taiwan this evening. Its epicenter was located far off the coast of Ilan, but the movement caused a water pipe to burst on land. No other damage or injuries have been reported as a result of this quake. Here are the stats from the CWB:
9:17 PM, 79.4 km ESE of Ilan, magnitude 6.3, depth 54.2 km. View data here. Read a Yahoo! report on the quake here. (Includes other Taiwan links.)
(MT) Thursday, June 7, 2001, 3:21 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - This seismic event occurred in northeastern Taiwan early yesterday evening:
Wednesday, 5:26 PM, 40 km south of Ilan, magnitude 4.3, depth 14.5 km. View data here.
(MT) Sunday, June 3, 2001, 11:57 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - A bogus quake report?:
Saturday, 7:48 PM, 27.2 km NNE of Tainan, magnitude 3.5, depth 20.5 km. View data here.
(MT) Thursday, May 31, 2001, 2:57 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - Almost a whole week after the last report, an early morning quake occurred near Sun Moon Lake -- again with its location described deceptively by the CWB in the interest of "tourism":
6:36 AM, 41.6 km north of Yushan (Jade Mountain), magnitude 4.3, depth 7.8 km. View data here.
(MT) Thursday, May 24, 2001, 2:57 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - Late last night and early this morning brought two quakes to the island:

Tuesday, 10:24 PM, 36.5 km north of Yushan (Actually, Sun Moon Lake would be a better point of reference. Oh, wait. Then they'd have to say "zero" km north of SML. Duh!), magnitude 4.3, depth 12.1 km. View data here.
(MT) Monday, April 9, 2001, 1:34 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - This quake yesterday morning in Hualien -- pretty near last Tuesday's quake -- alluded my attention until this afternoon:

(MT) Friday, March 2, 2001, 1:02 AM, Taichung, Taiwan - My apartment shook and creaked for more than 30 seconds just 25 minutes ago. It was a quake which was felt from Taipei in the north to Lanyu off the southern coast and from Taitung in the east to Makung off the western coast of the island. This info just appeared on the Central Weather Bureau's website:
12:37 AM, 39.7 km north of Yushan (Jade Mountain), magnitude 5.5, depth 8.9 km. View data here.
The CWB is still following their silly practice of plotting the location of earthquakes in relation to places far away from their epicenters. The above earthquake was quite near Sun Moon Lake, but because people in that area's tourism industry complained long ago that the reports were bad for business, the CWB somehow caved in to the pressure. Take a look at the map for yourself to see what I mean.

(MT) Tuesday, February 20, 2001, 7:59 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - Several recent quakes have authorities concerned that some barrier lakes -- formed as a result of landslides caused by the 921 Quake -- may be prone to collapse, threatening villages which lie downhill from these lakes. Three quakes have occurred since yesterday's update:

(MT) Wednesday, February 7, 2001, 9:42 PM, Taichung, Taiwan - The quake from Monday that I felt must've had its epicenter directly beneath me because it hasn't been posted by the CWB. They did post this seismic activity today:
