Here are some of our cows and calves that we own.
We do not own all the critters on this ranch. This is what we call a grazing association.
A grazing association is a conglomerate of 23 ranchers who bring all their cows & calves to us starting May 1st, and then take them home by November 1st.
All together, counting cows, calves & bulls, there are about 9500 head of cattle on this association. That includes another section of the grazing association, on the other side of the river, managed by our friend Ed. We have approximately 4800 on our side of the river.
This is rough country here as you can see in the photos. There are areas where a person on a 4-wheeler wouldn't think of attempting to navigate!
So next time you see a roper in a nice cushy arena...think about the real working cowboys out here who have to go thundering through the sagebrush & badger holes to catch their critters! Not to mention the sudden 400 foot drop-offs! We deffinitely try to stay clear of those!
Here are more of our cows!
The cow on the left is my cow Brownie & her calf Button.
This is Ruthie.
She was a holstein milk cow & we usually put 2 calves on her to raise each summer. She was to ornery to milk out by hand. She'd chase you right out of the corral if she had a mind to! AND she usually had a mind to!
One year she raised 3 calves for us!
On a sad note; in April 2000, we lost Ruthie to congestive heart failure. She was 10 years old.
She is now in that great pasture in the sky. Probably chasing all the cowboys out of her corral up there too!
