AVERY, IDAHO 1909
THIS IS A PHOTO I RECENTLY OBTAINED THAT I BELIEVE WESLEY ANDREWS TOOK AROUND 1909. THIS PHOTO SHOWS THE AVERY STATION IN THE CENTER OF THE PHOTO, WITH THE AVERY SCHOOLHOUSE IN THE BACKGROUND. THE CABOOSES IN THE AVERY YARD ARE LETTERED FOR THE CHICAGO, MILWAUKEE AND ST. PAUL AND THERE IS AT LEAST ONE CANADIAN PACIFIC BOX CAR IN THE YARD. THE HOTEL IDAHO IS ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE PHOTO AND APPEARS TO BE PAINTED A DARK COLOR. THE FOOTBRIDGE IN THE FOREGROUND CROSSING THE ST.JOE RIVER WAS ALWAYS A THRILL TO WALK ACROSS. I GREW UP NEAR AVERY AND THOUGH SOME INDIVIDUALS REFERRED TO IT AS A TERRIBLE PLACE, I THOUGHT IT WAS THE GREATEST PLACE ON EARTH. |
GERALDINE, MONTANA 1918
GERALDINE, MONTANA WAS ON THE NORTHERN MONTANA LINE AND IN THIS TOUCHED UP PHOTO FROM 1918 A STEAM ENGINE IS PULLING A TRAIN THROUGH TOWN. THIS AREA HAS ALWAYS HELD A LOT OF INTEREST FOR ME; AS MY FATHER-IN-LAW GREW UP NEAR GERALDINE. HIS FAMILY WENT THERE TO FARM BEFORE THE FIRST WORLD WAR AND EVENTUALLY MOVED BACK TO WASHINGTON WHEN THEY REALIZED THEY WEREN'T FARMERS. |
C.M.&PS Mallet 5023 at Deer Lodge, Mt 1910
THIS PHOTO IS OF A N CLASSET MALLET #5023 AT DEER LODGE, MONTANA IN 1910. THE PHOTO WAS TAKEN BY A PHOTOGRAPHER BY THE NAME OF GRAY. THESE MALLETS WERE PURCHASED IN 1910-11 TO SERVE AS HELPERS FOR THE MIKADO STEAM ENGINES ON THE MOUNTAIN GRADES OF MONTANA AND WASHINGTON. MANY N CLASS MALLETS WERE LATER USED IN BRANCH LINE SERVICE ON THE COASTAL AND IDAHO DIVISIONS. click here to return to the main page |
