The Flamin' Groovies were an American garage/rock music band of the 1960s and '70s.
They began in San Francisco in 1965 (actually preceding the Grateful Dead) founded by Cyril Jordan and Roy A. Loney.
The Flamin' Groovies early recordings reveal a debt to the Lovin' Spoonful, Beatles and Rolling Stones 'She Said Yeah'. The Groovies seemed always out of step with the rock world around them. They were more rockers, with a punk edge, that put them at odds with the peace/love movement of the latter 60's. In the 70's the groovies were the first band to release recordings 'Sneekers' on their own indepedent labels. Always more cult-popular and influential than commercially successful, the Groovies held tenuously to their musical roots - '50s American rock'n'roll and '60s British pop. In effect, they provided inspiration for countless bands 'Slow Death' and are legendary for good reason. |
