Chapter 20 -- Awakening
"Lou...Lou...Lou..."
Lou could hear a familiar and sweet gentle voice calling to her. Was this a dream of the afterlife? She then heard the sweetest voices in the world.
"Mama...Mama...Mother!"
Lou opened her eyes weakly and found herself lying on a bed in her nightgown. It was a comfortable bed and the room never looked more beautiful. There surrounding her were three of the most beautiful looking angels she could ever encounter. Joseph, Timmy, and Maggie sitting on the bed next to her. And there by her side was the great love of her life. The Kid.
"...Kid..." Lou weakly tried to mumble. Kid smiled.
"I'm glad you're awake now. Don't try to speak. The doctor took that bullet right out of your back. The marshall caught the men that shot at you. Can you believe Lightning came all the way to the house and led us to you?! That horse seems to belong to you!" Kid chuckled. "All right kids. Your mother should get rest. Give her a kiss and you go off and play."
All three children leaned forward to kiss her.
"Timmy and I prayed for you, Mother," Joseph proudly said after kissing her.
"I love you, Mother," Timmy smiled kissing her.
Then Maggie gently kissed her mother and scurried off the bed. Kid looked down at Lou and smiled.
"Lou, you got me worried. I thought I lost you."
"I think you did, Kid."
"What are you talkin' about?"
"Kid. I don't want to think about the past now. And no more 'what ifs'. It's just us now and forever. You and I have something so special. I don't want to have to think I regretted anything. You and I belong to each other. You are the last name I will say with my last breath and the only one I will ever put my love into."
"I love you, Lou."
"I love you, Kid."
The two lovers kissed each other. They truly belonged to each other. A marriage that was all about letting dreams come true. Kid gave Lou a home, a reason, a family, a purpose, and a love that can never be broken. No more "what ifs". It was now "what will".
