Clyde Raymond Melton
MELTON, CLYDE RAYMOND, age 86, of Birmingham, AL, passed away on January 22, 2008. Mr. Melton was born on August 7, 1921 in Monroe, LA. He retired from Prentice-Hall Publishing Co. as Vice President of Tax Law Division, he served in Third Marine Division in the Pacific Theatre during WWII, he attended LSU, was a 33 degree Scottish Rite Mason, a member of Birmingham-Jefferson Historical Society, a long time member of Highlands United Methodist Church, past president of Marvin Williams Sunday School Class and honorary member of Church Council. Mr. Melton was preceded in death by his daughter, Kathryn Melton Evans. He is survived by his wife, Eloise Monzingo Melton; sons, Mark Timothy Melton and wife Samie of Dallas and John Raymond Melton and wife Donna of Birmingham; grandchildren, John, Jr., Emily, Erica and Kate Melton, Heather Melton Leibrecht, Tiffany Melton, Lindsey Evans and Natalie Evans. Visitation will be Friday, January 25, 2008 from 12:30 PM until 2 PM with a service at 2 PM in the Chapel of Southern Heritage Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Southern Heritage Cemetery.


From Eloise Melton:
Raymond served with the 3rd Marine Division in the Pacific Theater. He landed and fought at the islands of Bougainville, Guadalcanal, Kwajalein, and Guam where he was injured by a mortar round while unloading ammunition on the beach. The injury was severe enough to send him back to the States.

After the war Raymond worked briefly for Lincoln Mercury and a local CPA firm in Longview, TX. He joined Prentice-Hall in the tax law sales department. His first assignment was Lubbock, TX. Then he moved to Birmingham, AL where he advanced to District Sales Manager. He eventually rose to Vice President, Tax Law Division at the corporate office in Engelwood Cliffs, NJ.

Raymond has always been active in the Methodist church and the Free Masons. He became a Mason Blue Lodge 3rd degree and a Scottish Right 18th degree. On October 25, 1997, he obtained the White Hat level of 33rd degree with the Scottish Right, Washington, DC and is a honorary member of the Supreme Council. His chapter is the Valley of Birmingham.
