Harvey Lee Mozingo Biography by Don Chapman
Harvey Lee Mozingo was born in Greene County, North Carolina, on
December 21, 1915 to Noah Allen Mozingo and Carrie Ellen Heath Mozingo.
Other than losing his mother at the age of five, and growing up during
the Great Depression, little is known of Harvey Lee’s childhood.
During his mid-twenties, he met his future wife, Anna “Louise” Chapman
of neighboring Pitt County. In 1940, he and Louise were married
in Dillon, South Carolina.
By the 1950’s, Harvey Lee was earning a living in highway construction
operating heavy equipment, which eventually led to his joining the
International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 77B, out of
Washington, D.C. Through the Union, he found employment on a
number of major highway projects in the states of Virginia, Maryland,
Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New York, including the building of
Interstate-95 in the 1960’s. Other projects included working on
the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal, land clearing for drive-in movie
theaters, and occasional snowplow duty during snowstorms.
In 1958, having no children of their own, Harvey Lee and Louise took on
the responsibility of raising their infant niece, Sharon, and years
later, their nephews Gary, Ricky, and Donald. Upon returning to
North Carolina in 1970, Harvey Lee and Louise decided to plant tobacco
and operate the Chapman family farm in southeastern Pitt County.
Harvey Lee was a hard-working, no-nonsense kind of guy who never
complained about life. He liked TV westerns, Chevrolet cars, and
Louise’s home-cooked meals. Louise enjoyed watching soap operas,
sewing, and cooking.
Unfortunately, by mid-November 1971, Harvey Lee’s health took an
unexpected turn, and on November 15th he died at the age of 55.
Louise did not survive him by many months, as she became ill in May
1972, and died on May 18th at the age of 52. They are both buried
at Evergreen Memorial Estates cemetery, Grifton, North Carolina.
