... We show Great Grandpa Elvarus married Lucy Eleby Monzingo on Sept 7th, 1886 - she died 1-19-30 and is buried in Bridge, Oregon. We show Kinchen and Mary lived in South Carolina and moved to Louisianna in 1858. From what I can tell, Mary lived until 1890 and died in Texas. Also, from what I can tell, Elvarus and Lucy (Eleby) lived in Saron, Texas at that time, having left for Oregon in 1899. I drove to Saron about 5 years back and all that is left of Saron is the cemetary and remnents from Great Grampa's mill. I DID NOT find any Monzingo's in the cemetary but understand most people in those days were buried on family land. Wish I could be more help... sorry, Dave Culver

Elvarius Culver, now a resident of Doniphan, Mo., was born in St. Lawrence Co., N.Y., in 1829. The year following his parents removed to Trumbull Co., Ohio, where our subject was educated and learned the cabinet and millwright trades. In 1855 (1856?) he removed to the town of Whitestown and purchased a stock of goods from George Prentice. He was engaged in mercantile pursuits, in the village of Ontario, for twelve years. He now owns eighty acres of land in the town, but resides in Doniphan, MO. In 1852 he married Ruby Oliver, and six children have been given them - Hattie, wife of William Lower; William, who married Amanda Webster, Charles, Bert, Nellie, and Sibyl. Charles, the third child and second son, is a native of Whitestone. He has been a resident here all his life with the exception of eighteen months spent at St. Louis, MO. He married Emma C. Webster, and they have one son - Eddie C. Mr. Culver is the owner of a residence and two lots in the village of Ontario. from "History of Vernon County,"1884, p 753.

from "History of Vernon County" Earl M. Rogers, Madison, Western Historical Asso., 1907.
Two merchants from New York came in the Spring of 1856, Nathan and Elvarius Culver. They were born in St. Lawrence Co, New York, and the latter was also a millwright by trade. Nathan Culver was born in September, 1820, and resided in the place of his birth until 1831. He then accompanied his parents to Trumbull Co, Ohio, where he received such education as could be obtained in the common schools at that time. He learned the cabinet and chairmaker's trade and his father and worked in the latter's factory until 1844, when he removed to Platte xxxx, Grant Co, Wisconsin and there rebuilt the Morehead mills. In 1846, he moved to Fayette Co, Iowa, and there commenced the erection of a mill. He remained about one year, when owing to poor health he moved to Black River, Wisconsin. There he worked at millwrighting nine years, and then, in 1856, came to the new settlement in the town of Whitestown, where he constructed a mill for Giles White, and also one for Thomas Wilkerson. In 1858, he pre-empted 166 acres of land on section 2 (?). In 1861, he enlisted in the Eighteenth Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, and participated in the engagement at Pittsburgh Landing, following which he engaged in the campaign against Corinth, Miss., and while near the latter place, on Sept. 1, 1962, he was taken prisoner. He was later exchanged and rejoined his regiment. Elvarius Culver was born in 1829, and the year following his parents removed to Trumbull Co, Ohio, where the son was educated and learned the cabinet and millwright trades. In 1856 he removed to the town of Whitestown and purchased a stock of goods from George Prentice. He was engaged engaged in mercantile pursuits, in the village of Ontario, for twelve years, and later removed to Doniphan, Mo.

To this union 6 children, 3 sons and 3 daughters, of whom 4, one son and the daughters survive. His wife, Ruby, died in 1884. "Elvarus Culver is improving and cultivating 420 acres of land located on Rock Creek, near Bridge, Oregon, Coos County, and has gained recognition as a successful and practical farmer. He was born in St. Lawrence Co., NY on Feb. 6, 1829, and is the son of Joseph Culver, who lived in that section (of New York) for many years before he moved to Ohio. Upon the death of his wife in that state, he moved to Pennsylvania where he passed away. He was the father of six children.

Elvarus Culver received his education in the public schools of Ohio and early in his life learned the trade of millwright which he has never entirely abandoned. He followed it as a steady occupation for many years and was successful in all parts of the U.S. He built a large mill in Arkansas and one of equal capacity in Saron, Texas. Fifty or sixty mills in different sections of the U.S. are due to his enterprise and labor and in this branch of activity he gained recognition as an expert workman.

Elvarus Culver was twice married. His first union occured in Iowa where he wedded Miss Rubie Blaesdell. They became the parents of six children: Charles (Wisconsin as of 1911), William and Warren (deceased as of 1911), Mahetable, the wife of Wm. Lower of S.D., Nellie B. who married J.E. Skinner of Arkansas, and Mabel who is the wife of O.Rodgers of Sioux Falls, S.D. Rubie died in Missouri and some time later he married again. His second wife was Miss. Lucy Eleby Monzingo, who was born in S.C. on Dec. 15, 1851 and is the daughter of Kinchen and Mary A. Monzingo. She and Elvarus are the parents of three sons, James E., Clarence Franklin, and Dwight."
