Evelyn B. (Carden) Bryant, 81, of Erie died at 2:25 a.m. Monday at Flower Hospital, Sylvania, where she had been for 1 day. She had been in poor health since last August. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Rupp Funeral Home, Monroe. She will lie in state at 12 noon Thursday at Stewart Road Christian Ministries Center, where funeral services will be at 1 p.m. The Rev. Al Jukuri of the church and the Rev. Aaron Vance, her grandson, will officiate. Burial will be at Roselawn Memorial Park, LaSalle.
Born April 30, 1928 in Knoxville, Tennessee, she was the daughter of William and Emma P. (Pierce) Massingo. She married Robert Bryant June 14, 1978 in Erie. Evelyn had worked at the Monroe Stamping Plant of the Ford Motor Company for 15 years and then for 23 years was a supervisor for Living Independently for the Elderly, retiring in 2008. She was a member of Stewart Road Christian Ministries Center and had been a founding member of Monroe County MADD and had served as its president. Evelyn was instrumental in making changes in Michigan's law of drunk driving. She had lobbied in many Michigan courtrooms and at the state legislature. She received in 1999 a State of Michigan Award for Volunteerism.
Surviving is her husband, Robert Bryant of Erie; eight daughters, Carol (Carmen) Pantuso of Sevierville, Tennessee, Elizabeth Williams of Monroe, Helen (Bill) Yoakum of Flat Rock, Ruth Cherry of Punta Gorda, Florida, Judy (Neil) Miller of Hot Springs, South Dakota, Elaine Brooks of Monroe, Evelyn (Tim) Hunter of Petersburg and Robin (Brian) Carden-Fisher of Indianapolis, Indiana; two step-sons, Mack Bryant of Rockwood and Jimmie Bryant of California; two step-daughters, Sue Kelly of Toledo and Barbara (Roger) Hardin of Nashville, Tennessee; twenty eight grandchildren and thirty great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Danny Ray Carden, a daughter, Barbara Sue Hites, granddaughter Lorry Hites, a sister, Thelma M. Hansel, a step-son, Hobie Bryant, a granddaughter, Michele Doty and a step-daughter, Brenda Kopmanis. Online condolences may be sent through www.ruppfuneralhomeinc.com.
