Russell Greene "Russ" Perkins, age 83 of Farragut passed away March 17 at Parkwest Medical Center. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Concord for over 36 years where he served as Deacon and Sunday School Teacher, where he taught the men's Pathfinders Sunday School class for over 25 years. A native of Hatcher Station (Quitman County) Georgia, he was born to the late Abner and Bessie Gay Perkins on July 5, 1923. He was the namesake of his maternal grandfather, Greene B. Gay, who served in Milton's Light Artillery, Company A, CSA. He attended junior college at Rabun Gap-Nacoochee School in Clayton, Georgia and received his BA in chemistry with a minor in history from Lincoln Memorial University in 1947. Employed by American Surety Company from 1947-1963, he retired from Aetna Casualty and Surety in 1985 with over 22 years of service. His employers offered him the opportunity to experience life in many locations including New York City, Houston, New Orleans, Atlanta, Tulsa and finally Knoxville. He enjoyed a long and eventful retirement including travel to many foreign lands. Russ was a United States Naval Veteran having served in the Pacific Theater during World War II.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by: his first wife, Myrl Masingo Perkins in 1986; a sister, Elizabeth Jenkins; brother, Alton J. Perkins and four half sisters and half brothers, Mamie, Florine, John and Leon.
He is survived by: his wife, Betty V. Perkins; daughter and son-in-law, Andrea and Joe Bowditch of Powell; son and daughter-in-law, R. Gene and Andrea (Cissy) Perkins of Lenoir City, TN; granddaughters, Kara and Courtney Bowditch; step daughter and husband, Kay and Spencer Alfrey and step-daughter, Debbie Vannoy; step-granddaughter and husband, Danielle and Michael Reed; sister, Marjorie Hughes.
Funeral services were held March 20 in the First Baptist Church, Concord with Dr. Doug Sager and Rev. Steve Peek officiating. Interment was in the Woodhaven Memorial Gardens with Full Military Honors by Volunteer State Veterans Honor Guard. The family request that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: First Baptist Church, Concord, "Heart of It" Building Fund, 11704 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, Tennessee 37934. Rose Mortuary Mann Heritage Chapel was in charge of the arrangements.
