NEWTON - J.C. Witter, Newton, died Sept. 2, 1999 at Friendly Acres Retirement Community, Newton.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Friendly Acres Retirement Community Chapel. Burial will be at Fairlawn Burial Park, Hutchinson. Friends may call from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday at Peterson Funeral Home, Newton. Memorials have been established with Southwestern College, Trinity Heights United Methodist Church and Friendly Acres Retirement Community. Contributions may be made through the funeral home. Witter was born May 6, 1907, in Salem, Ind., to Edgar Curtis and Maggie Mae Baynes Witter. On Nov. 21, 1931, he married Thelma Monzingo at Great Bend. She survives. Witter served in several administrative positions at Southwestern College for more than 20 years. He has been a resident of Newton for more than 20 years. He was a member of Trinity Heights United Methodist Church, Newton. Survivors include his wife, Newton; a daughter, Maridene Akin, Crested Butte, Colo.; a sister, Lillian Epley; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, William C. Witter; and a sister, Lois Grey.

NEWTON - Thelma Witter, 91, of Newton, formerly of Winfield, died Dec. 21, 1999, at Friendly Acres Retirement Community in Newton. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Fairlawn Burial Park in Hutchinson. The Revs. Don Swender and Henry Murray will officiate. Petersen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorials have been established with Trinity Heights United Methodist Church and Friendly Acres Retirement Community. Witter was born Sept. 13, 1908, in Hutchinson, to Frank W. and Elizabeth (Jones) Monzingo. On Nov. 21, 1931, she married Dr. J.C. Witter. He died Sept. 2, 1999.

Witter, who received her teaching credentials at Sterling College, taught music at Jetmore from 1929 to 1935; Fowler from 1951 to 1952; Niotaze from 1955 to 1956; and Winfield's Whittier Elementary School from 1957 to 1974. She was a member of Trinity Heights United Methodist Church, Retired Teachers Association, Association of American University Women, United Methodist Women and Friendly Acres Choir and Activities Association. Survivors include a daughter, Maridene Akin, Crested Butte, Colo., and five grandchildren. A son, Bill Witter, preceded her in death.
