Vernon Earl Slayton, 72, a native and longtime resident of Jackson, died at his residence in Jackson on Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003 after a long illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon O. and Earline A. Slayton.
Mr. Slayton was the president of Slayton Oil Distributing Company in Jackson. He attended Marion Military Institute for two years and graduated from Auburn University with a bachelor�s degree. While at Auburn he was a member of the ATO Fraternity. Active in civic affairs, he was a member of the Jackson Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow, a member of the Clarke-Washington Auburn Club, the Santa Fe Lodge and a retired captain in the Jackson Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of the Administrative Board at the First United Methodist Church. He was a 1st. Lt. in the U. S. Air Force for two years and served in Japan.
He is survived by a daughter, Lizann Pezent; son, Vernon Earl "Ves" Slayton Jr.; sister, Molly S. DuBose; aunt, Christine Slayton; granddaughter, Jenny Hearn, all of Jackson and two grandsons, Trey Slayton and Trent Slayton, both of Rogers, Ark. and other relatives.
The funeral service was Oct. 27 at the First United Methodist Church with the Revs. Jim DuFriend and Mark Dunn officiating. Burial was in the Pine Crest Cemetery in Jackson with Lathan Funeral Home directing.
Pallbearers were Fairley Morton, George Morton, Bob Dickinson, Cecil McMullen, Eddie Slayton, H. W. Pearce III, James Foster and Ken Hundley.
Honorary pallbearers were Rotary Club members.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Jackson Rotary Club Scholarship Fund, the Greater Auburn University Clarke-Washington Scholarship Fund or the Methodist Children�s Home.
