Neurosurgeon James Mozingo dies; medical career spanned 3 decades
LAKELAND - James Robert Mozingo, a neurosurgeon whose wide interests led to degrees in chemistry and aeronautical engineering as well as medicine, died Sunday. He was 56.

Mozingo's medical career spanned nearly three decades. A 20-year resident of Lakeland, he was affiliated with the neurology departments at Lakeland Regional Medical Center and the University of Florida.

Born in 1942 in Meridian, Miss., Mozingo earned his medical degree at the University of Mississippi. After a year's surgical internship, he joined the U.S. Air Force, serving at MacDill Air Force Base and leaving the service at the rank of captain. He lived in Tampa from 1976 to 1978.

Mozingo published 11 articles in top medical journals, including pioneering procedures involving cervical spondylosis and intervertebral disc disease.

Among his other accomplishments, he earned a doctorate in chemistry and a bachelor's degree in aeronautical engineering.

Survivors include his wife, Madelynne, of Lakeland; two sons, Christopher of Lakeland and Samuel of Tampa; one daughter, Catherine Strollo of Lakeland; and one sister, Arlene Schlichte of Tampa.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Marsicano-B. Marion Reed-Stowers Funeral Home in Tampa, with services immediately following at the funeral home. Graveside services will be 2:30 p.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lakeland.
