Holy Vanishing Cities, Batman!
I'm sure you've seen the pictures. The dog that was turned into a statue by decomposing in the volcano ash; the bath house filled with skeletons. But in those pictures, you can only see a very small part that the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D. actually had on Italy, and the future of Geology. That eruption was the first to ever be recorded in first-person. Today, students of volcanology (or whatever it's called) use Pliny the Younger's account of that eruption as a reference for more recent eruptions. |
