The Cardinal Points

The four directions are the cardinal points.  In Egyptian mythology, they are sacred to Shun, god of the cardinal points.  An obelisk represents dominion over four quarters, plus zenith, which is the fifth point, called 'Ashka' or Spirit.  This is the fifth (upward) point of a pentagram, and it represents the element of spirit found in everything.
