Shakira is a South American super-star. Although she is of Middle Eastern ancestry, she grew up in Colombia, and her music reflects the rich variety of her background.
She is a most outstanding performer, and writes all of her own songs. Within the last year, she received a Grammy nomination for Best Latin Rock/Alternative Performance, and won a World Music Award for Highest Selling Latin Female Artist.
The title of her current album "Dónde Están los Ladrones?", which means "Where are the thieves?", is a reference to a whole batch of her songs having been stolen. These are not bad replacements, I must say. An English language version of Dónde Están los Ladrones? is due out soon, with Gloria Estefan assisting in the translating department.
Shakira Isobel Mebarak Ripoll is twenty-two years old. She was born in Barranquilla, Colombia, February 2nd, 1977.
She wrote over forty songs by the time she was ten and when she was 14 her first album was released but only in Colombia.
Shakira was nominated for a Grammy & won a World Music Award!
Her current album has reached gold or platinum status in: Argentina, Brazil,Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, and Venezuela!
