Slipknot formed back in 1995 in Des Moines, Iowa. They were one of the first heavy metal bands to come from that part of the country.
After their current producer, Ross Robinson, heard a demo tape (Mate, Feed, Kill, Repeat) distributed by the band he signed them with Roadrunner Records. After a lot of work, they released their 15 song, self-entitled album.
The self-titled cd was re-released with a small change in the play list. Numbers seven (Frail Limb Nursery) and Eight (Purity) were replaced with Me Inside. The song Purity is about a girl (Purity Knight) who was kidnapped and buried underground in a box. The song Frail Limb Nursery is mainly part of the recorded conversation between Purity and a small boy that happens to find her. The boy takes the recording to the police, but they don't find her in time. So she dies. This story can be found at Crimescene.com. The band was threatened by a law suit, so they removed the songs from the album after Corey was informed that the story was fictional.
Everyone says that 9 members in one band is over doing it, but bassist Paul Gray was quoted as saying
"If anyone of us didn't show up for rehearsel, even the dj, then it just didn't sound right. Every little thing makes Slipknot what they are."
Each member is draped in cover-alls. So far I've seen red, black, orange, white, blue, and a mixture of black and white. A tribal S on the left arm, and their own personal number from 1-8 on the left. The numbers meaning something special to them (a lucky number, exc...) When they picked their numbers something pretty strange happened. There was no arguing, everyone picked a differant number.
They performed at Ozzfest and nearly stole the show. It created a huge fan base for them. Since Ozzfest they've toured with bands such as Slayer, Sevendust, (Hed) P.E., Hatebreed, Kittie, and Mu|Dv|Ay|Ne.
