GOO GOO DOLLS TO PERFORM AT NICKELODEON'S 13TH ANNUAL KIDS' CHOICE AWARDS; "BROADWAY" GETS OVER 100 ADDS AT RADIO AS DIZZY UP THE GIRL CLIMBS 30 POINTS ON BILLBOARD'S TOP 200 ALBUM CHART!

Multi-platinum recording artists the Goo Goo Dolls will perform two songs at Nickelodeon's 13th Annual Kids' Choice Awards this week in Los Ang eles. The event, taped at the Hollywood Bowl, will air Saturday, April 15th from 8-9:30 PM ET/PT. This past week the Goo Goo Dolls latest single, "Broadway," received over 100 adds at radio, propelling the group's sixth album, DIZZY UP THE GIRL, up 30 points from 155 to 125* on Billboard's Top 200 Album Chart. DIZZY UP THE GIRL has been on the album chart for 80 weeks and has sold over 3 million copies. Four singles off the album, "Iris," "Slide," "Dizzy" and "Black Balloon" have accumulated over a million plays at radio.*

The video treatment for "Broadway," written by comedian Bobcat Goldthwait, is now in rotation on MTV and VH-1. The clip is a parody on the rock star mystique where ordinary factory workers punch in their time clocks and join the make-over assembly line that transforms them into glamorous rock stars. This star imagery machine proves that rock stars are really just old balding fat men and women in really good makeup. The video was directed by Nancy Bardawil who also directed videos for "Iris," "Slide," "Dizzy," and "Black Balloon."

The Goo Goo Dolls can be seen on several television programs this month. First up, the band filmed a comedy skit last week while at the Tonight Show, which is set to air Thursday, April 13th. Performances by the group can be seen on the popular television series CHARMED on Thursday, April 27th and on MAD-TV will air Saturday, April 29th. An upcoming appearance by band member Robby Takac on VH-1's The List, will be announced shortly.

ON TO OTHER NEWS!!If yall are wondering how Grammys are chosen, well here is how. I got this info off of the official Grammy website by IBM (http://grammy.com/history/)

    The GRAMMY Process

This simplified description illustrates the various stages of the GRAMMY Awards process. The process begins with members and record companies submitting entries, which are then screened for eligibility and category placement. The Academy's voting members, all involved in the creative and technical processes of recording, then participate in (1) the nominating process that determines the five finalists in each category; and (2) the final voting process which determines the GRAMMY winners.

    Entering

The Recording Academy members, plus record companies, enter recordings and music videos released during the eligibility year which they consider worthy of recognition in the GRAMMY Awards process.

    Screening

Reviewing sessions by more than 150 experts in various fields are held to ensure that entered recordings meet specific qualifications and have been placed in appropriate fields such as rock, r&b, jazz, country, gospel, new age, rap, classical & Latin, among others. The purpose of screenings is not to make artistic or technical judgments about the recordings, but rather to make sure that each entry is eligible and placed in its proper category.

    Nominating

First round ballots with lists of eligible recordings in all fields, except those voted on by special nominating committees, are sent to voting members who return their ballots to the independent accounting firm of Deloitte & Touche LLP for tabulation. To help ensure the quality of the voting, members are directed to vote only in their fields of expertise, and to that end may nominate in the four general categories (Record, Album, Song of the Year and Best New Artist) and in no more than 9 out of 22 fields on their ballots.

    Special Nominating Committees

In crafts and other specialized categories, final nominations are determined by national nomination review committees comprised of voting members from all of the Recording Academy's chapter & branch cities.

    Final Voting

Lists of the finalists are sent to voting members with their second round ballots. The finalists determined by the special nominating committees are also included on these lists. In this final round, Recording Academy members may vote in the four general categories and in no more than 8 of the 27 fields. Ballots again are tabulated in utmost secrecy by the independent accounting firm.

    Winning

Results of members' voting are not known until the GRAMMY Awards presentation ceremony when names of the winners are delivered by the accounting firm in sealed envelopes. GRAMMY Awards winners are revealed during the GRAMMY Awards telecast. The GRAMMY Awards are telecast to an international audience of over 1.5 billion in 170 countries.

2/12/00--THE TRUTH HAS BEEN FOUND! Hehehe. Hows is that for a segway? Anyway, Wall of Sound has an article with John and he is explaining his relationship with his wife. So here yall go.

    Goos Singer and Wife Separate

Johnny Rzeznik of the Goo Goo Dolls confirms that he and his wife, Laurie, have separated. But it's not what it sounds like.

"We're not separated to get divorced," Rzeznik explains. "She's going to college. We're separated like, 'I'm going to school, you're doing this, we're not going to see each other much. Let's see what happens when both our lives settle down a little bit.'"

Laurie, whom Rzeznik married during the mid-'90s after they had been dating for many years, is studying at Buffalo State College, the singer-guitarist's "sort-of alma mater" ("I spent three years there, all freshman"), to be a high school English teacher. Rzeznik applauds his wife as "a brave woman. I told her, 'You're gonna have to get a flak jacket.' Maybe I'll get her shooting lessons for her graduation. But she's all into that thing; she's unbelievably altruistic. I was like, 'Don't you want to be a shrink? You're so good at it; you've been dealing with me for 10 years!'"

But Rzeznik says that ultimately, the ability to support Laurie in her pursuit is a way to pay her back for backing him during the many lean days of the Goo Goo Dolls' road to stardom — the group is currently nominated for a Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocal Grammy for the hit "Black Balloon." "She never wanted to get in the way of me doing this and always supported it," he explains. "That's the nicest part about [success], being able to pay people back who did right by you."

2/11/00--Hey everyone. I apologize for the lack of updates. I've been sick. yuck. Let me tell you. Not a pleasant thing! Well, I'm sure most of you have heard that John has broken his ankle. Que triste! Hehehe. I know we all wish him a speedy recovery! Also, don't forget to watch VH1 tomorrow to see where the goos are for the all time favorite Behind the Music episode. They SHOULD be pretty high up there =)

2/3/00--Happy February to everyone! It's soo warm here! It's almost 40 degrees! I can't believe it! I love it! Anyhoo...enough about Indiana weather. I got a bootleg copy of the December 3 buffalo show and lemmmmme tell you! IT KICKS MAJOR ASS! I can't stop listening to Cuz You're Gone/1000 Words *SIGH*. Lets have a moment of silence while waiting for the next tour to start. *silence* Ok. I got my awesome buffalo from a great guy named Scott Keagy. He's also a photographer. If you're interested in checking out his stuff e-mail him at Rockphtr10@aol.com. Until then, keep loving the goo!

1/31/00--Good morning yall! Did everyone catch Sesame Street? I hope you did b/c it was the cutest darn thing! The guys interacting with Elmo was just adorable. Elmo actually even looked a little like John once he put on his "rocker clothes". He was seen sporting a ball necklace like John often does. But if you happened to miss this performance, don't forget it'll be rerun tomorrow and sometime in mid-March. check it out!!

1/29/00--Hey all! Sesame Street on Monday wohoo! Don't forget to watch it and set your vcrs! I found this cool quote from Robby and thought yall might want to see it.

"I write about things that tear me apart, and it's all very personal to me. It's funny to hear people disassemble the lyrics. If they get it wrong, it almost means more to me, because it's morphed into something that is meaningful to them." -Robby

Don't forget to check out the quote pages to see more hella cool quotes from the guys!

1/26/00--Morning everyone! Go to vh1.com, and vote for your favorite behind the music episodes. the winners will be shown feb 7th! Don't forget to vote for the goos!

1/25/00--This was on the Sesame Street website.

The Goo Goo Dolls are internationally known for their unique guitar sound and right-on song writing. After January 31, 2000 they'll take on new fame as the guys who jammed with Elmo on "Pride," a Sesame Street parody of their hit song, "Slide."

In "Pride," the Goo Goo Dolls celebrate the furry red monster's greatest achievements, like reaching a high shelf, getting dressed by himself, drinking all his milk, and eating his peas. Yeah, Elmo's got a lot to be proud of and Goo Goo Dolls John Rzeznik, Robby Takac, and Mike Malinin want to hear about it.

The Buffalo-based Goo Goo Dolls are no strangers to great achievements. In 1998 they released their sixth album, "Dizzy Up the Girl," which has already sold over 3 million copies. The band is currently nominated for a Grammy Award for "Black Balloon." Rzeznik and Takac have been together since 1987, and along with drummer Malinin, have built an intense following through passionate live performances in their hometown region and across the world. After appearing on Sesame Street the Goo Goo Dolls can add millions of two-, three-, and four-year olds to their legions of fans. Even Elmo would admit that's something to be proud of!

1/24/00--There is a cool article at Sonicnet.com so read it and all!

1/23/00--I thought yall might want to read this. It's from Hit Parader Mag.

Question: Have you ever heard a song on the radio that you found yourself instantly connected to spiritually, but you don't know why? All you know is that a special bond was formed...and then...the experience just simply left you spellbound in their dust!

For me, when I heard the song Black Balloon ... the words were so powerfully written that they left me...awe-struck! So to help me understand "why I was feeling this way," I asked the man behind the lyrics, John Rzeznik, his thoughts on how an emotionally-charged song can have such an impact on one's soul.

"It's a song about saying good-bye to a friend of ours who completely messed her life up with drugs. There was nothing much that was being said about it, so I felt that I should do something," describes John. "Lyrically, it came to me, I believe that the words can hold up on a piece of paper on their own...and (to me) that's a very important part of a song...to be able to hold up it's end," quips John.

"Unfortunately, this is not an uncommon story, so being in a situation like that... this song is very special to me," remembers John.

On a personal note: "I would like to say thank you for believing in us and sticking by us...through everything! A lot of bands come and go...so fast! It's nice to actually be around for a while and have our fans grow with us," discloses John.

1/20/00--Everyone get psyched! Seasame Street is fast approaching! Just wanted to let everyone know that I've added a few pixs to the pixs page (that'd be ummmm pages 15-17). So check them out!

1/16/00--Hey all! New look to the site! Hope yall like it! I have to give MAJOR MAJOR MAJOR thanks to Dave for helping me out with it. Also thanks go to Alex for helping too. Everyone e-mail me your thoughts about the new look!

    12/22/99--EVEN MORE crash news

(12/22/99, 10 a.m. ET) - The Goo Goo Dolls are currently making their way back home to Buffalo, N.Y. to celebrate Christmas--and yes, they have to fly. LAUNCH asked singer Johnny Rzeznik if he's got any special thoughts on his ordeal and the plane crash that happened Sunday (Dec. 19) in Italy (LAUNCH, 12/20).

"Yeah, I'm pretty glad to be here," Rzeznik said. "Yep, pretty glad to be here. But there's just a lot of questions that are starting to nag in my brain. Why would someone try to land in something like that? Who was the guy on the ground that told him he could land in that? Why didn't anybody know we were coming in? That's the real one that I want to know." He added that the reality of the situation is still setting in. "I'm sure that in three days it's really gonna get to me. Like it's gonna sink in and I'm going to go, 'Oh man,' but here we are. I swear to God, somebody, something is watching out for us, because we walked away without a major incident."

When asked if the crash would deter him from doing a USO tour in the future, Rzeznik said, "No, I'll definitely do it again. I've got nothing against the Navy. I just thought that pilot was irresponsible, and he endangered a lot of people's lives. I'm sure some people would say, 'No he saved everybody's life on that plane,' but my point is, we shouldn't have been put in a situation like that in the first place," he noted, referring to the pilot's decision to land in a severe thunderstorm.

The Goo Goo Dolls are not exactly eager to get in a plane right now, which led them to cancel their appearance on MTV's "Fly2K" promotion (LAUNCH, 12/21>). "I'm going to play in New York, but we canceled us being on the flight from London to New York, because I'm just not into flying right now unless I absolutely have to. And Tom Calderone over at MTV was cool about it. He was like, 'Well, you know, you guys were just in a plane crash.'"

12/21/99--More crash news...this time from LAUNCH.

12/21/99, 12 p.m. ET) - The Goo Goo Dolls have spoken to LAUNCH about the plane crash the band was involved in at the Sigonella naval air base in Sicily on Sunday (Dec. 19) (LAUNCH, 12/20).

Johnny Rzeznik told LAUNCH about dropping out of the sky. "We flew into a thunderstorm. We flew into a huge thunderstorm, and the pilot tried to land and he couldn't, so then he went around and he tried to land again and he couldn't, and then he tried to go around again and he couldn't land. And then he went around again to try and get it and then he...I don't know what happened, but that plane dropped! And it sounded like a bomb went off. And out the window of the plane there was like all these sparks. And then we went off the runway and skidded through this field. The landing gear was completely destroyed, and there were these two big holes in the wing."

He added that only one oxygen mask came out, and one emergency exit was not functioning, so they had to slide down the inflatable device on the back of the ground to safety. "We were standing on this runway in this insane torrential thunderstorm and we stood out there for like 15 to 20 minutes." Everyone was told to run away from the plane in case it blew up.

Rzeznik also told LAUNCH that he phoned up MTV bigwig Tom Calderone to tell him that after what they went through, they're not quite up to participating in the channel's "Fly2K" contest. The band was supposed to fly to several destinations picking up fans in cities such as London, Rome and Paris to bring them back to Times Square in New York City to ring in the Millennium. Rzeznik added that the band will honor its commitment to play in Times Square on New Year's Eve.

The band's plane, a C-9 transport plane, slid off the runway at the Mediterranean island air base at around 9:30 p.m. local time. No one among the 30 people on the plane--which included the band, their entourage, and military personnel--was hurt in the accident.

12/19/99--SIGONELLA, Sicily, Dec 20 (Reuters) - U.S. band the Goo Goo Dolls were involved in a crash at a military airbase in Sicily after returning from a Christmas mission to entertain troops in Bosnia, a U.S. navy force official said on Monday. No one was hurt in the incident at the Sigonella naval air station in the west of the Mediterranean island. ``At around 9:30 p.m. (2030 GMT), the C-9 transport plane slid off the runway while making a landing at the naval air station here,'' Lieutenant Cappy Surette told Reuters by telephone. ``While the weather was a factor, it was rainy and there was lightning and high winds, I can't speculate on the overall cause of the mishap. An investigation will be launched,'' he said. Surette said 30 people were on board, including the band's entourage and military personnel. There was some damage to the plane but that was still being assessed, he said. ``We're very relieved no one was hurt. The Goo Goo Dolls have taken time out of their busy world tour to entertain troops and their families and we want them to get home safely,'' he said. The Goo Goo Dolls, signed to the Warner record label, have recently released their sixth album ``Dizzy up the Girl.'' Their biggest hit, ``Iris'' was included on the soundtrack for the film ``City of Angels.''

Someone on the Goo mailing list watched the buffalo newscast and gave this report: they interviewed robby's parents. they said robby called them and was shaken but they were all ok. he said that they had trouble landing. there was gasoline everywhere and he thinks one of the engines fell out. they had to leave the plane by chutes and stand in the cold rain. their trip is not being interrupted or anything, though. they did not show the goos themselves, just some concert footage.

GOO GOO DOLLS GATHER GIFTS FROM BUFFALO TO BOSNIA; 5000 Toys Collected at Buffalo Toy Drive To Be Distributed to Children Locally and in Bosnia. Band Will Present Toys to Tuzla Army Base December 19th. Warner Bros. recording artists The Goo Goo Dolls recently held a Christmas Toy Drive during their three sold out shows in their hometown of Buffalo, NY. Residents of Buffalo came through, donating approximately 5,000 toys and games for underprivileged children just in time for the holidays. Every person who donated a gift received an autographed photo of the Goo Goo Dolls, personally signed by band members Johnny Rzeznik, Robby Takac and Mike Malinin. U. S. Marines were on hand to collect half the toys for distribution to the local chapter of “Toys for Tots.” The other half of the toys will be distributed by the U.S. Army to needy children in Bosnia. Rock-it Cargo, the freight forwarding company that transports the band’s touring equipment, volunteered their services to ship the toys overseas to Ramstein Air Force Base in Germany, free of charge. From there, the toys will be forwarded by the armed forces to Bosnia, where the Goo Goo Dolls will present them to Tuzla Army Base on December 19th for distribution to local orphanages. The band is currently on their military “Christmas Tour,” where they’ve been performing for Army, Navy and Air Force personnel at European bases including a stint on the aircraft carrier the USS JOHN F. KENNEDY located somewhere in the Mediterranean. “We want to thank the people of Buffalo for their overwhelming response to the toy drive” said Robby Takac. “They possess the true spirit of the season, and because of their generosity, lots of children will have a happier holiday this year.” Upon their return from Europe, the Goo Goo Dolls will gear up for the new year by joining MTV’s “FLY 2K” contest. Viewers will enter a contest to win a trip aboard the custom made millennium party plane that will take them on a global adventure. The plane leaves NYC on December 20th, picks up additional winners in Rome and Paris, then it’s onto London, where the Goos will meet up with the plane. The final stop will be back at MTV’s Times Square studios in New York for a New Year’s Eve celebration with performances by the Goo Goo Dolls, Jay-Z, 98 Degrees and others. In other Goo Goo Dolls news, Johnny Rzeznik can be seen hosting VH-1’s hottest new music variety talk show, The List, now through Friday, December 17th.
