Chapter 9

Nick hung up the phone, and slowly dropped to his knees.

"Oh God" he whispered, his hands covering his face. His precious love was finally found. But he might lose her forever. Or his little baby.

Nick picked up the phone once again, and dialed the only number he could think of right now.

"Hello?" a happy male voice answered.

"Hey Rok" Nick said quietly.

"Frack, what's up?" Brian asked, not suspecting anything.

There was a pause. Nick didn't speak a word, afraid that if he did it would all be real.

"You there man?" Brian asked confused.

Nick walked over to sit on his bed.

"Yeah... yeah I'm here. Brian, I know where Destiny is"

"You what? Hey, that's awesome news man! Wow... it's been what? 6 months?"

Nick sighed heavily.

"Yeah. But unfortunately she didn't bring good news." he said getting teary-eyed.

"What'd she say?" Brian asked concerned. He hated it when his little brother was depressed or in trouble.

"That... the doctor said... she... I dunno Brian. I'm just really confused. She said something, about having some sort of disease, which they can't cure, and that either..." he said while tears slowly trickled down his cheeks. Suddenly he dropped the phone on the bed and broke down. He hadn't cried since Denniz died, though this was an other kind of grief and pain. His body was shaking with sobs.

Brian said nothing. Let his friend take his time, though he just wanted to get over there now and take little Nicky in his arms and tell him it'd all be ok.

"...that either her or the baby will die, or something" Nick said finally, regaining his composure.

Brian was shocked beyond belief. He sure hadn't expected this to happen. Especially not to his poor young kid brother. He didn't know what to say, but he knew he'd have to think of something. He had to be strong and be there for Nick.

"I'm so sorry buddy. Do you want to talk about it? I could come over you know" he said trying to comfort his friend.

"Thanks Bri, but now's not a good time. I'm planning on going up there, to where she is and see her." Nick said, while he sat down on the floor trying to reach his suitcase underneath his large king-size bed. He got a hold of it and desperatly tried to pull it out. After a few attempts he succeeded and happily lifted it on top of his bed.

"When are you leaving?"

"As soon as possible. I'll book a last-minute flight as soon as I hang up with you, and then I'm off."

"Ok, take care buddy. Tell Destiny I said hi. That we all said hi, ok?"

"Will do. I'll call ya when I get there, alright? Bye!" Nick said and hit the 'end' button on his cordless phone. He tossed it on the bed, and walked over to his huge walk-in closet. He opened the doors and searched for the clothes he wanted. He found some of his NFL jerseys, baggy pants, and other garments to wear and threw them all on his bed.

Once again Nick reached for the phone, and dialed an airline company to book a flight, heading to New Hampshire. There were a few vacancies on the 5:30 pm flight. Nick got all the information he needed and hung up. A dialed a few figures to get a taxi, that would be there within the next hour.

He quickly returned to his packing, and put all the clothes into the suitcase. He then went into the bathroom to get his toothbrush, toothpaste and other toiletries that he would need. He put them into his suitcase as well.

After checking that he'd gotten everything he needed, and turned off the lights, he locked the door to his huge house. The taxi was already waiting by the gate, and Nick hopped into it, as soon as he had secured the gates. And he was off.

*****

"Here you go!" Nick paid the taxi driver. "Keep the change"

"Thank you sir!" the driver said and drove away.

Nick looked up at the huge mansion-like house. He walked the path which led up to the main entrance. The front doors were open, so all he had to do was walk right in. To the right was a living room, with groups of sofas and armchairs in which girls and women were sitting. Some pregnant, some with small infants in their arms. He held his breath at the sight of a young girl with a large belly thinking that, that must be what Destiny looked like right now. Further down the hall was a TV lounge. To the left he found the reception desk. A short little red-haired plump lady with green glasses was sitting behind the desk obviously writing something. Nick walked up to her. She looked up at him as he approached her. She had the cutest smile.

"Hi there. How may I help you?" she asked flashing him an other smile.

"Hi, I'm looking for Destiny Parker?"

"What's your name, sir?"

"Nickolas Carter. I'm her bo... uh, her friend" Nick said. He almost revealed that he was her boyfriend.

"Hold on just a sec" she said searching through the files. "Here she is. She's in room 441. Take the elevator up to the 4th floor and it's on your left" she said smiling once again.

Nick returned her smile. "Thank you, ma'am" he said, and headed for the elevators, and went up to the 4th floor. Once there, he turned left and walked down the hallway and stopped outside number 441. He sighed heavily. This was it! No turning back now.

He knocked on the door carefully. Waited a few seconds. Nothing happened. He knocked again, this time harder. Nick could hear someone approaching the door on the other side, and a 'click' coming from the door knob, and the door opened.

"Oh my God" Nick thought, at the sight of his beloved girlfriend. His eyes searched down to her belly. It was huge. Nick felt tears spring to his eyes. He felt nothing but confusion, and mixed emotions. "Carter say something!" he thought to himself.

"Hi" he said.

"Hey" she said, obviously feeling the same.

"Uh... ca-can I come in?" he stuttered.

"Sure" she sniffed. She stepped aside, letting him in.

He sat down on the couch. "Nice apartment" he commented. "Cheap one Carter"

"Thanks" she smiled at him. He returned her smile.

"I... I came here today, to tell you something important. And please don't cut me off, until I'm finished" Nick said looking down at the floor. He didn't dare looking her in the eyes. When she said nothing, he continued.

"What I told you back then, about not wanting any kids, was probably the most stupid thing I've ever said. Nothing can take it back, I know. But I've changed my mind. I've been doing alot of thinking over the past 6 months, and realized that there's nothing I want more, than to have this baby with you. Sure it scares the hell out of me. I think I'm most scared of being a bad father, a bad role model for my kid. I love you Destiny. I've loved you since the day I saw you at Star Bucks. About this whole desease thing... well, we'll go through it together! You and I. And... if something will happen to you, I'll be there for our child. I promise!" Nick stopped, and finally dared to look into her eyes.

"I promise" he said once again.

Destiny was stunned. Tears streamed down her face. Tears of happiness. Tears of sorrow. Tears of loneliness. She had seen the love in his eyes, and was completely overwelmed. All she could do was nod her head. She fell in his arms, and he enveloped her into a hug.

"What would I do without you?" she whispered between tears.

Nick flashed her that famous half-smile, with a mischievous sparkle in his eyes.

"I don't know what I'd do without myself either"

Destiny chuckled. Suddenly Nick look a bit uneasy.

"What?" Destiny asked.

"Um... I don't know if you want me to... but I was just wondering... um..." he looked down at her belly. Destiny understood immediately what he wanted. She gently took his hand and placed it upon her stomach. The look on Nick's face was prizeless, as he felt his little baby kick, for the first time.

"Oh my God" he said above whisper. "Is that...?"

"Yes it is, silly." she said smiling.

"That's our baby?" Nick asked, not waiting for an answer. He gently laid his head on her stomach, trying to listen for any sound that their baby made.

"Did you really mean all the stuff you said before? About taking care of him or her if something were to happen to me?" she asked worriedly.

"Every word" Nick said leaning in and placed a soft kiss on her lips.

"I really missed doing that" he said when they parted.

"Me too" Destiny said. Suddenly a tear trickled down her cheek.

"What's wrong baby?" Nick asked.

Nobody had called her 'baby' since the day Nick left for Sweden. She really missed it.

"I just... I don't wanna die Nick. I'm so scared" she said even more tears streaming down her cheeks. Nick pulled her into a hug, and gently rubbed her back.

"Shh baby. It's gonna be alright. You're not gonna die. I won't let you, do you hear me?! I won't let you!" he said kissing her hair.

"But if I don't die, our baby will. And I don't want him or her to die either."

Nick had a hard time to control himself, from not breaking down and cry right there. He didn't know what to do anymore. He was scared shitless. But he had to be strong for Destiny. No matter what happened, he would not let Destiny see he was just as scared as her.

"I don't want him or her to die either. I don't want either one of you to die." Nick said, wiping a tear from the corner of his eye.

Destiny suddenly arose from the couch. "I'm going to the bathroom"

"Ok" Nick said, and watched her go into the other room. She had a little trouble walking, and Nick figured it was because she was 7 months far along already! He glanced back at the sofa table, and noticed a magazine for pregnant woman. He bent over and picked it up. As he looked through it, he saw pictures of pregnant woman, and of the most cutest babies. He wondered what his little boy or girl would look like. Would he or she resemble Destiny, or himself? Destiny he hoped. A sudden scream brought Nick back to reality.

"NICK!" Destiny cried out.

Nick ran as fast as he could to the bathroom.

"What? What is it?" he asked in panic.

Destiny was crying, as she desperately looked up into his face.

"Nick... I think my water just broke"
