Late 19th century - guitarists begin to experiment with electricity to amplify their sound

Oct. 10, 1902 - Gibson Mandolin-Guitar company is created

Early 1930s - Famed guitarist, Les Paul, begins developing an idea for a solid body electric guitar

1948 - Leo Fender develops the Telecaster

1952 - Gibson, after rejecting the idea in the mid-40s, finally debuts Les Paul's solid body electric guitar

1954 - Leo Fender develops the Stratocaster, a radical new design that is still around today
