Early Closeup
This was taken while trying on
a new outfit--it must have been ten years ago, judging by the somewhat
inexpert makeup (oh, that blue eye-shadow!), but it's how I looked at a certain age. I salvaged the
photograph while shredding hundreds of others, a clean-up long overdue. And yet we do
cling to these bits of evidence, these images frozen in time that seem to prove our
womanliness, as if we will need someday to make a case before some tribunal, no doubt
a Kafkaesque affair, heavenly or not.
