Then I set about gathering a small armload of roses, my favorite, to place one on each of their pillows, along with a lushous double chocolate truffle. The rest of the roses would be arranged in vases with ferns and baby's breath, which I also grew, and placed throughout my two story, blue, country victorian home. Setting all the roses in a bucket of water, I then busied myself with the flower arrangements for the vases. I have such a deep a connection with flowers but especially roses, that a lot love went into each arrangement. I smiled the entire time as I placed each rose in it's vase, knowing that these roses were for the lovable lads that I adored. Next I went to the big but cozy kitchen and planned out the weeks breakfast menus, trying to guess at what they might enjoy; this took up much time since I found it harder and harder to concentrate, as the hour drew near for my departure.
When I had finished it was 10:00 p.m., just enough time to freshen up, change clothes, put out the roses and chocolates on their pillows, open up the popourri jars for a nicely scented house and go. I flew to my room, took a quick shower, dried my hair and used my curling iron to make a few loose spiral curls in my just over- the-shoulder length hair, and dabbed on some of my favorite perfume. I put on the new mini dress I'd bought for the occassion a white and blue floral print that fit close but not tight and was short but not too revealing. I eyed myself in the mirror and decided that with a little makeup and some hose, I'd make a good first impression.
Now with dressing done, I hurried in to get the rose vases out and the roses and chocolates placed on their pillows. I became aware as I lifted the roses for the pillows, out of the water that my hands were shaking.
'My God,' I prayed, 'I'm so nervous, help me calm down, so I can at least drive.'
Placing out the last rose and chocolate on George's pillow, I smiled with satisfaction and hoped it would bring him a smile as well. I had saved the most perfect red rose for him, with it's heavy old fashioned spicy scent, I knew he'd love it.
Finally after locking up the house,I made my way out to my huge, shiny, black beauty of a car, with a short creak the car door opened, I settled into the comfy drivers seat, which after years of use, moulded to whoever sat upon it,as did all the seats. I turned the key over and it purred to life, I shifted it into gear and was flying down the highway in no time, daydreaming the whole way.
With my stomach and heart churning and flip flopping, I rolled into the long drive down to the terminal that was located amongst vast pasture land. Nobody knew that the Beatles were coming to this airport, so the place was pretty desolate except, the control room had a light on. I had made it there before their chartered jet the Electra, had gotten in. "Oh good!" I sighed with relief.
Fifteen more minutes went by and it was 11:00 p.m. now,the time for their arrival. My hands were already sweaty and when I saw a plane land right on time and the printing on the side spelled out E-L-E-C-T-R-A, my blood pressure rose, my heart was racing so loud that I could hear my pulse in ears, my face felt hot and breathing came in gasps.
" Oh God, Oh God they're here, they're here!"I screamed, inside my car, with a white knuckle death grip on the steering wheel. I strained for any sanity I had left, from deep within myself, to resemble any kind of control. I kept telling myself, 'Breathe, breathe, for God's sake breathe deeply, calm down Angie, calm down, relax, you've got to calm down or risk looking like a fool in front of them. ' That helped some, enough so that I was able to get out of the car and stand by it under the light. Evidently between the air traffic controller, Brian's details of my description and the fact that my car was the only big, black one there , they found me straightaway.
Forcing myself to breathe normally, I opened the large trunk of my car and unlocked all four doors, as I could tell that each one of them, including what I guessed was Neil and Mal, were loaded down with luggage and instrument cases. I thought, gee, I hope it all fits.
Finally there they all stood not more than five feet away from me.
John was the first to speak up and with a puzzled look on his face he questioned, " Are you Angelina Fairfax? "
I opened my mouth but nothing came out, oh no, oh no, I'm too hysterical to speak I thought. Breathing deeply and quickly closing my eyes I stuttered out, " Y-Y-Yes, " quickly opening my eyes again, I felt my cheeks go hot with embarrassment.
" No, you can't be, the one Brian told us about, well er, he never came out and told us, but we all thought you'd be just this nice little forty or fifty year old lady, who owns a bed and breakfast, no, we never expected all this. "
Startled I said, " Well I hope I'm not to your disliking but other than the age difference it's all true. "
" Oh on the contrary luv, you're quite a lovely surprise, and a pretty little bird too. "
I looked down and blushed seven shades of red and could of swore my face was glowing as bright as a hot ember.
" Oh, now look what you've done Johnny, you've embarrassed the poor thing, now she probably won't speak to us all night, " Ringo chided.
" Yes and what a pity that would be, " smiling, George sided in.
" Oh, stop, " I said, giggling and for the rest of the night try as I may I couldn't wipe that grin of sheer delight off my face.
"Well, where do you want us to put all this luv, " Mal asked, obviously weary from the load in his arms.
I said apologetically, " Oh, I'm sorry, right here in the back, I think most of it will fit in the trunk and I'm sorry but the rest you'll have to carry up front with you. "
" Oh, that's o.k., your car is big so it'll be alright, " Paul assured, as he got in the back seat with John and Ringo.
Amazingly everything fit into the trunk except George's guitar case, so he set it in the rear seat that faced the other lads and sat himself with me in the front seat.
Neil said seemingly satisfied with the arrangements, " If that's all you boys need and if everything runs as smoothly as this arrival did, I don't suppose you'll need Mal and I around. "
John said, " No. Nell ( as they had affectionately nicknamed him) you and Mal go on home and if we need help Angelina has phone numbers for security guards here that Brian gave her. "
I nodded in reassurance that what he said was true.
Then with a wink and a devilish grin, John looked right at me and said, " And besides we want this little dollie all to ourselves! "
With raised eyebrows Neil responded, " Ah, now Lennon you behave youself while your here or she might make you sleep outside tonight. "
The others laughed and Ringo teased, " Yeah, Johnny and no breakfast in the morning either. "
With that John put on the cutest pouty face, with the most innocent eyes and said, " Oooh, you wouldn't do that, would you luv, not to a lovable moptop like me? "
More laughing broke out and I was thinking I'd never thought of John as adorable, sexy maybe, but never as adorable, I could see he could be if he wanted to. Nevertheless his actions melted my heart, he was so cute just then, that I had to resist the urge to pat him on the cheek lightly.
I did end up saying, " No, but you mind your manners or I'll make you wash dishes all week," with a giggle.
I got in the car and rolled down my window, as the others did to say our goodbyes to Neil and Mal and we were off.
" How'd you get such a gear old car? " George asked.
I explained how it had been in my family for years and a couple years ago I finally got the money to have it restored and so my father let me have it, since I put all the money into it's repairs.
" I like it a lot, " George said approvingly.
Paul asked, " What kind of car is it anyway? "
" It's a 1942 Packard 160 series limo, " I said.
Then they all fell silent, and soon were asleep, obviously exhausted from all the events of the day. I looked in the rearveiw mirror to see John asleep against the left window , Paul asleep against the right window and sweet faced Ringo asleep with his head back against the back seat and lightly snoring. I smiled at the sight of all of them so peaceful looking. Turning my head to right I saw George was sleep, kind of slouched forward, head down and outlike a light.
I thought, "Gee, I hope he doesn't fall over," but then I noticed that the seatbelt had been fastened and I figured he'd be alright. I wanted to touch his hair and lean him towards the window but I didn't dare, knowing he needed his sleep, I didn't want to upset him.
So the rest of the way home my ears were filled with the sounds of sleepy breathing and Ringo lightly snoring away. It was sort of nice, I could relax now and pay attention to the road.
