anaphylaxis reverb (cdr from anaphylactic shock recordings)
i can't remember who brought it up first, but after contributing a track for his 'soundtracks to one minute films' project anaphylaxis and myself decided to trade, my tape for one of his cds. so i was browsing his available catalogue and read the description for reverb and saw that the track 'still' was built from patsy cline samples [actually this is a remix of a track off of
sad songs and waltzes, a split with diamond shamrock where all eight of the anaphylaxis tracks are built from patsy cline samples, and that isn't out yet, and anyway i wasn't sure if i would want all patsy cline based songs on my first exposure]. so i basically had to get it just to hear what he did with the source, especially so after hearing his mix of vacuum tube. if you don't like some of the sample sources [which include saint etienne, which made me cringe a bit, cos all i've really heard is tiger bay and fox base alpha, which i hated] don't worry, cos they are practically unrecognizable. each track is anaphylaxis' own. anyway, as you might guess from the title, the main effect used is reverb, and lots of it. for the most part tracks are very serene, atmospheric and occasionally musical. i would hesitate to even call some of them noise, especially 'piano,' built from looped piano samples [obviously]. identifiable vocals pop up on a few songs, very plaintive sounding on 'still (remix)' although i couldn't really tell you what is being said [especially without having heard the source, my only patsy cline exposure has been 'back in baby's arms' on the natural born killers soundtrack and 'i fall to pieces']. and actually as it turns out my favorite track is the one with the saint etienne samples, the excellent 'romantic,' a very powerful piece that has kind of a mogwai or my bloody valentine feel to it. very nice. i didn't notice until my second listen but the average track length is around eleven to twelve minutes [although the curve is broken by a six second bonus track at the beginning, what i'm guessing is a person saying  "reverb," possibly black lodge style, and thats a twin peaks reference so figure it out]. great cd, and cool artwork too.
