A small planet about 30 light years away from Earth, orbiting a distant binary star one being an o-type star, housed the remains of the Hellion clan. The planet was inhabited only by the clans members and any unlucky sole to crash land on the surface. The planet itself was covered in ice with 2 moons. The hellion clan had arrived on the planet around the time the fight for planets started. For about 5 years no one had bothered them so they could build up their defenses, but they knew sooner or later they would be on the defensive either for their supplies or the land they stood on.
The clan members all rejoiced as their prize mech the Diablo returns home from a recon mission in a nearby system. Though they had 500 tons of hardened armor and about 600 tons of assorted laser weapons and artillery, the Diablo along with the 6 other mech were the only defense for the outpost.
The mech starts its approach to the landing deck on the 6th floor of the massive main building, which stands in the middle of a group of small house size structures. As it heads for the top floor landing bay a shoot rings out from the heavens, a green bolt of energy screeches from the sky striking the mech in the back causing it to fall off course and slam into the ground to the right of its target with a thunderous crash that sent a nervous chill through every one of the technicians working in the command center at that time.
All at once every person sprang in to action trying to find out what happened. Ben Taurus, the top ranking officer present yelled into the COM, "Hanger, shot fired, Diablo down, off the scope, anyone there?"
"First pilot Owens here sir, could you repeat that?"
"Scramble all mechs and fighters now mister!" Ben yelled back.
Ben then pushed a few buttons on his display and shouted through the COM "Damage team to north east side of the compound Diablo is down."
"Yes sir!" someone then replies.
Ben shook his head and mumbled, "Direct hit, from where? Our satellites should have picked up a ship or something."
Fighters one by one flew from the opening in the main building into the greenish blue sky. The mechs all walk from the lower bay with ease, steeping over the fence and gate surrounding the base.
"Mechs, hold position," Ben barks into the mike, "Fighters take a low orbit and watch for hostiles."
They did as he commanded as he radioed more people. "Get the LRMs (long range missiles) and laser turrets online now!"
As he did this, the fighters took position. A mech waiting for them, not unlike the Diablo took aim and before they could respond and shot a SRM 20, a missile launcher which fires 20 small homing warheads. The fighters took most of the hits and their shields protected them. One however took heavy damage and became paralyzed. The force of the blow knocked its engines offline also pushing it into a decaying orbit. It would slowly burn up as the gravity pulled it to its doom. "Fighter 4 down, base copy."
"Copy," Ben sighed then yelled, "Send the mechs!"
With that the 6 mechs fired their leg rockets and started into the sky. The fighters replied to the hostile, with a volley of laser fire that hit the mech with such force to knock it back into a spin like an old F-15 falling from the sky with one on fire. The right arm then exploded in a shower of sparks at the shoulder, and flew off shattering into a million peaces. As the mechs joined the fighters, a new target appeared, and then two more, then even more. The Hellion fighters and 6 mechs engaged the opposing force in a blaze of laser and missal fire. The attackers now with the defending force became a swarm of ships fighting to survive. Explosions appeared left and right, signaling the loss of one of ours, or the death of one of theirs.
"Repair team reporting, Diablo badly damaged but can fly, over."
"Good get it ready," Ben replied, "load an Earth Shaker missile, I will fly it"
With that he left the COM room and headed for the hanger.
Up above, both forces got chewed out. Only a few on each side remained now. However a ship, probably a battle cruiser, loomed in the distance. It carried ground forces and more mechs doom for their clan. Ben launched in the Diablo to join his beaten companions in the fight for their homeland.
Ben leered at the approaching spectacle of laser fire and thought to himself, "For each death today, and every death of my friends and fellow pilots, I stab at thee." With that he slammed his standard issue boot onto the accelerator and headed toward the approaching ship.
The turrets and lasers take out the remaining mechs and fighters in the atmosphere, as the final shot carried by Ben had to be delivered to the ship, which could be the clan's end.
The Diablo flew on until it was in range, about 12km. With the push of a red button, a door opens with a clanking noise, on the right arm of the mech. The Earth Shaker, properly named, came from this opening in a trail of red mist. The Earth Shaker was the most advanced achievement by the Hellions in a long time. Known only by them this missile could take out a base with one try. A large blue bomb looking thing with four fins and a pointed tip accelerated and after a few seconds will collide with the oncoming ship. The ship from here looked like a ship resembling a Saturn Five rocket, bigger of course. It is long and many different arrays extend from it, but that didn't matter because in a few seconds it would be gone. The bomb then explodes with a huge red burst that instantly knocked out the shields of the oncoming ship and inflicted enough damage to start a chain reaction that took out the entire ship. A shock wave traveled through space and knocked Ben back and he had to use the stabilizers to keep from spinning out of control. Before being destroyed the final ship in the sky other then Ben fired a LRM that headed straight for him. Ben knew that the planet was safe for now and his clansmen would be safe this time but for him the fight was over, and he knew that. The LRM struck the Diablo and in a massive explosion took the life of Ben and destroyed the mech. The debris scattered in every direction most of it being pulled into the atmosphere of the planet. The rest of the debris were scattered around the solar system by photon winds which are high in this area. A few fighters did survive the fight and start to head home but not before thinking, "What have we become, fighting over resources and land like savages, when we could all exist in unity."
Then they fired their engines and descended to the surface.
The loss suffered by the Hellions was great but, they could still rebuild, and thus prosper, for now.
